All Things Superman: An Open Discussion - Part 5

I think considering how useless the police are in Metropolis they might as well just get rid of them and sanction Superman.I want that to change. I think we need some strong cops and also some corrupt cops, so that Superman has a reason to exist.

The sad truth is that in the time I've been reading Superman comics I've very rarely read any comics that were grounded to Earth and not about some cosmic being threatening humanity or Superman going off world to save people.

Even though the comics in the first 10 years of Superman's inception were quite primal at heart I still enjoy them more than the absolutely unbelievable stories that normally take place nowadays. Apart from the odd run or elseworld novel I can't say that any Superman comics taken me by surprise. I'm pretty young but I've tried to read as many back issues as available and honestly most of them just seem the same.

Here's to Grant Morrison changing that.

They're actually doing the opposite. Based on what I've read so far of the DCnU, we're supposedly going to see the 'heroes' placed in a world where they're somewhat new to crimefighting and very much untrusted by the general populace. It's like they're starting over in a way.

The Justice League were sanctioned by the government when they appeared and saved the world.

Are they individually sanctioned though? If so, did it happen recently? I know Batman has some sort of arrangement with Gordon. Not so sure about the others.

In the Marvel Universe, there was a major focus on getting costumed heroes registered during the so-called Civil War. I believe there was a similar event at some point for DC characters. Again, though, not sure.

They are indeed. Which is my point. Thus far apart from in Batman and a few other titles, the police just pretty much love the crime-fighters being around. Flash museum, Superman being Superman, eurgh.

They're going for a more grounded approach instead of people just bowing down to these heroes. There needs to be a level of mistrust.

If there were superheroes with the powers the DC Characters exhibit running around I'm sure not everyone would start asking for t-shirts with their logo. The authorities would surely get their backs up. Due to their corruption being exposed and also due to the straight cops not being sure of the vigilantes' intentions.

this is where justice league and action comics start out. isn't everything else 5 years later? but i guess that still stands

Closest was Kingdom come, which imo Marvel used for the template of Civil war. Not the first time Marvel has stolen from DC but we will save that for another day.

As much as I hate to say it, this film should have been shot in 3D.

It needs to have a strong box office showing and inflated prices would have prevented this from weak opening numbers just like it did with the Marvel flicks this year. Moreover 3D is insane overseas and when you have an international property like superman it would have been a guaranteed "success" At this point it remains a toss up. However I anticipate a forced post conversion. WB's calling card.

I mean honestly, the biggest movies this year owe a large percentage of their butts to inflated prices.

So it isn't being shot in 3D?
I don't know about filming, so I can't tell by looking at the cameras, etc.
Is this confirmed?

I've recently re-read the Golden Age Superman, from 1938 through the '40s, and from '38 until about '43, he really did come off as a socialist. He came off very much as anti-corporation, pro-regulation. In one issue, he destroyed an entire block of slum housing simply so the government would be forced to step in and rebuild it!

Exactly. That era's tales are much better than the poorly written trash camp, that was the Superman of the 50s and 60s. Everything from those decades should be forgotten.

I don't think the movie is being filmed in 3D, if so, they should have at least made it known.

WHo's saying that they aren't shooting this in 3-d.
Last thing we heard about this was that Zack SNyder was experimenting with a new way of shooting 3-d
3-d movies have been shot with digital cameras however the experiment that Zack was doing was basically shooting 3-d on regular film.

Recent interview with Zack:

N: I imagine you envision this bar in three dimensions...?

Z: Will "Superman: Man of Steel" be shot in 3D is a subject soon to be revealed. We are conducting certain experiment, which will determine the technology we'll be using.

N: Now you have to tell me more about this technology experiment! You just have to!

Z: Ok, but remember it's all in a testing phase. If it works, our "Superman" will blew Hollywood away. 3D is not James Cameron's invention, even though I'm sure he thinks otherwise. 3D movies were massively produced back in the 50's. However, visual effects were kinda modest at the time. So I came up with an idea, that Chris has found very interesting. I want to improve this old 3D technique and shoot our movie in 3D, but on a regular film reel. My visit to London interrupted this experiment for a while, but we are close to achieve what Cameron did in "Avatar" but without computers and digital cameras. I want my movie to look natural, to have this organic tape graininess. I don't want every shot to be color-corrected, digital cameras tend to lose focus. If we succeed, it will be the first professional 3D movie shot on regular cameras. And that will be total revolution.

Interesting. This makes me even more thankful that WB's, Nolan and Snyder decided to push the release date back until Summer 2013.

Good stuff!

They've done 3D Celluloid before...just not for a feature-length film. It usually involved a mirrored rig in which one of the cameras is mounted 90-degrees from the other, and has a lens pointing at an angled mirror next to the other camera's lens. The main reason why one camera is mounted perpendicularly is that the size of the camera bodies and magazines makes them too big to be mounted side-by-side and have lenses close enough for proper convergence et al. Camero did it for two 65mm cameras when he did T2-3D....

They did the same with the Red (digital) on the latest POTC, as I recall. But maybe they're using something else for MOS.

This does sound likely, as you see dual-monitors in production snapshots like this....

...but again, maybe it's a new system if they are indeed shooting film.

LOL at the Cameron comment. Very nice! I for one do love 3D quite a bit, and if it enhances the MOS experience in a different way, bring it on.

Sounds interesting. No Superman Returns colour botch-up then?

It is interesting, especially because Snyder's films since Dawn of the Dead all have a very synthetic, "this was made inside a computer", look to them.

Yes...300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch, and that Owl thingy all had that that 'so real you could taste it' look to them

:oldrazz:

300 and Sucker Punch existed in a CGI world, with Live action players kinda like SIn City in certain respects.

Both were eye candy to the extrodinaire

GaHoole, is without a doubt one of the worst CGI movies I have ever seen, not sure who that was supposed to appeal to, I would rather watch the Owl in the Secret of NIMH

on a constant loop then anything in Gahoolio

Wait, since when did Snyder become a champion of the oldschool way of filmmaking? His aesthetic sensibility meshes with digital like breast and baby.

Hmmm....Nolan seduced him worse than I thought.

Actually, I meant the opposite...So fake looking its a smidge away from being a video game.

Yeah, I think in that meeting with Snyder Nolan probably said "realistic" in every other sentence. Snyder seems to have taken note.
