I saw Returns in theaters twice, I'll probably see this about three times.

Saw Returns 3, maybe 4 times in theaters. Once captions oddly enough.

I love the Donner movies. I love the Williams theme. There's nothing that will ever change that.

But that just doesn't feel right, to me.

People have been pumping those vids out for months and they just don't fit.

It's nice ... but something is always slightly off ... again, using Williams theme would have simply been another way of seemingly connecting Man of Steel to the Donner films ... as a franchise they need to do whatever it takes to move BEYOND that stage ... or it'll never be relevant today. Hence the costume update ... new music ... etc. Superman Returns made that mistake of doing an homage to the past and suffered as a result from a public stand point, because no one is going to be Christopher Reeve in the sky blue ... and no one is John Williams.

The opening to "Planet Krypton" literally works with everything Superman. Everything. Even Lois and Clark.

I don't know, it just feels so wrong, it's like seeing Chris Reeve's Clark kissing Teri Hatcher's Lois

I agree. William's score just doesn't fit with this film for me, which is interesting because I was fine with it on Smallville and edited over incarnations of the character, but it just doesn't fit this particular film. Too many things are different in style. There is such a disconnect between audio and visuals.

However, I can't agree with the second part. That sounds like such an improvement.

and this just crossed my mind a little while ago. Super Speed...has anyone thought that that they aren't running really fast but taking LARGE strides in a quick amount of time??

I can imagine some of Williams' score working in MoS but it can't be the exact same 1978 recordings and arrangements pasted in to the movie. Smallville actually has a good example of this. In Rosetta, they did a synthesized rendition of the Fortress of Solitude track which fit with the style of the show, but the original recordings being played over the ending of the series finale were so totally out of place.

One part of his story doesn't make sense to me. The guy claimed that the screening was for preferred customers of the theatre chain, people who had memberships and went to see movies regularly, and then a few lines latter he talks about not going to the theatre much. Doesn't add up.

hahaha Well, gotta admit Margot's Lois isn't at the top of my favorite Lois list either

It always amazes me when on a fan forum every single poster gets the exact reaction they want to post out of a friend or family member when it comes to a movie, tv show, comic, etc.

Or maybe I actually showed someone the This is the End trailer and they didn't know they were playing themselves... Just for balance I showed someone else it and they thought it was hilarious.

The first person was someone I'd class as a stereotypical typical film watcher (as in they just want a good time. They wouldn't know many actors by name, wouldn't know a more obscure film purely by the title and would have no idea that Kal-El was the name of Superman etc etc) and one was quite a big film guy. To me unless you get what TITE is you wouldn't really find it that funny. The first person also absolutely hated The Cabin in the Woods as they had no clue that it was supposed to be a deconstruction of horror films. My point is it helps with these films that you know what you're in for.


Anyway back to MoS

I disagree that Smallville is another version of the Donnerverse. It adopted Donner traits due to Superman Returns (crystal technology and fortress, snowy/icy Krypton, the Phantom Zone square), but it was always different in style and tone and up until the end of season 4, it was its own thing.

^ Honestly, the JW's theme sounds too triumphant to work for a more dramatic Superman movie. It would have to be "retooled" in order to work within that context, and I feel like that would be a cop-out way of doing it. With Bond there is a cohesive-producer driven franchise. The Bond theme doesn't just celebrate Bond, but the effectiveness of the franchise as a whole. Superman has a HUGE amount of time between the decades (aside from SR), and using that theme would keep referencing the past.

And I LOVE JW's Superman theme. I think it's unbeatable in terms of melodic quality. I own the Superman soundtrack, I get chills whenever I hear a good cover of it as well. But that doesn't change the fact that MOS is trying to distance itself from past franchises.

Besides, I liked some of the themes for the straight to DVD movies (not by Williams), and MOS sounds like one of Hans Zimmer's better works of the 2010 period of time. It's a fantastic score, but it isn't musical "canon."

I hope not. I think West is the definitive Silver Age Batman, Keaton the definitive Golden Age Batman, and Conroy the definitive Modern Age Batman.

Well, I think if they had certain musical references and played the end at full a'la Casino Royale, that would be an effective way of handling it.

Agreed, that's mysterious, grande and at times, spooky. I'm sure there'll be plenty of moments in the film that we'd wish it subconsciously
