Only film The Man of Steel needs to truly worry about is Despicable Me 2, and by the time that opens, it will have made most of its money.

That's true, but I can see MU taking the top spot from MOS in it's 2nd week. Unless early tracking for MU is poor, of course. Is it?

Monsters University takes the top spot in MOS second week.

Yeah sadly, I can't see it happening any other way. And surely Monsters University is gonna be bigger than Despicable Me 2 right? I mean Pixar, right?

Despicable Me 2 has more momentum going for it than MU... first film was released 3 years ago, Monsters Inc. was released 12 years ago.

I don't think so. I think Despicable Me 2 is bigger, but Monsters University is a 4 Quad film which takes away lot of MOS business. I think MOS will still hold well, but not well enough to beat MU.

Despicable Me 2 will beat Monsters University. Not even close.

That has no hype. Even brave had more hype.

That's true I've barely seen a thing for MU.

But I wouldn't understimate it, the first one is much loved and I can see people getting excited for another one.

What? Why cant you make? I would drop anything I was doing, unless of course its something really important, which I'm guessing it is?

It's a 90 minute drive to get to the theater, and 90 minutes back. We have a year and a half old. It would be hard to ask someone to watch her for half the day like that. Plus my wife has been sick lately so I don't think traveling that much would be a great idea for her.

And I won't make opening day because all next week I'll be out of town for work.

Says the guy who laughed off my advanced claim that Bridesmaids would be the most popular comedy of summer 2011.

"The most popular comedy of the summer". I didn't realize that was a category?

If this trend holds true, then MU won't affect MoS as much as you think. MU will take money, but MoS can still be seen by a lot of kids, like how I saw Batman Returns when it came out in theaters (I was 8 or 9, but I was super hyped).

I think it just really depends on how strong WOM is on MOS. If everybody tells their family and friends that it is an awesome must-see movie then it will hold up fine against the competition. If WOM is weak then it will get lost in a sea of competition just like SR did when POTC 2 came out.

WB shouldve pushed up MOS a week since After Earth was never even a threat

Assuming MoS reviews well, yes word of mouth is what is going to get the people who weren't convinced or who wait until rental to see it in theaters. When they hold reviews that's a good sign it's pretty decent.

World War Z reviews are already up and it's getting beat up, and it comes out a week after Man of Steel.

I'm wondering how well MU will do too... I seriously haven't seen one trailer or TV spot for it. Maybe I'm just not watching the right movies or TV shows though, I don't know. Either way, Monsters Inc. was one of my favorite Pixar films, but I honestly have zero interest in MU, maybe because it's a prequel and it's been 12 years since the original. Something about that doesn't sit right with me. It just wreaks of being Pixar's "When Harry Met Lloyd."

I haven't see a trailer for it yet and I've seen the MoS trailer 3 times in theaters with 3 different movies, and a trailer for Despicable Me. Go figure.

I have seen a couple commercials on TV though.

Monsters University is not gonna be threat to MOS and for many reasons.

One being the fact that NO one wanted this movie. What I mean is that everyone who saw the original wanted and expected a SEQUEL not a PREQUEL.

So, many, including myself, aren't in that big a rush to see it.

MU will definitely have some of the younger audience (about 4-8 year olds) begging to see it, but I think the vast majority will want to see Man of Steel.

The brutal truth is that MOS will sink or swim based on the actual quality of the film and whether it appeals to the masses. All summer movies face stiff competition. If MOS can't compete with the other blockbusters then it probably is not that great and should have been released in February. :o

Just for comparison's sake:

Zack Snyder on Justice League and how his world connects (it's obvious WB pressured him to have DC references) [YT]2uEgIONT2vo[/YT]

[YT]yc2U4GIZlZw[/YT] On World's finest, at the 4:45 mark.

I think it's safe to say that Snyder wants it, Cavill wants it, the fans want it, but they all want it after MOS' TRUE (mostly stand-alone) sequel.

Wow, alot of people underestimating Monsters University here. It's going to be very big and will take the top spot from MOS. Walk into any Toys R Us or other retail store, Monsters stuff is EVERYWHERE and is selling. Animation, especially Pixar animation will always draw pretty large. Add in the established brand of Monsters Inc and it's going to be big. MOS will have a solid second weekend but it will be in second.

Yeah, if MOS is good (and it had better be), I want a MOS sequel that leads into JL... not the other way around.

Same here I've only seen two TV spots for MU. But I have seen lots of TV spots for MOS though. I have zero interest in seeing MU didn't care much for Monster Inc.
