The Force Awakens Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke - Part 1

So, besides Plagueis, which seems to be a theory the filmmakers have constantly denied, what major rumors are there regarding Snoke's real identity and what the Knights of Ren are? A branch of the Sith?

I don't know about rumors but I doubt the Knights are offshoots of the Sith. I believe they are another denomination of dark side force users. How different they are from the Sith I don't know but the thing with the Jedi and Sith is that they are the most well known sects of force users but they're far from the only ones.

In the novelisation Snoke has a pretty big monologue where he praises Darth Vader's life, so whatever the hell he faction he belongs to, must have some reverence for the Sith Lords of old.

I just hope that whoever Snoke is they find a way to differentiate him from Palpatine. His personality is somewhat different but it still feels inherently similar.

Awesome. Snoke seems more approachable. I found a somewhat soothing aspect of his character. But in a manipulative way.

I got that vibe to Jaqua.

He doesn't seem as "sinister" or "treacherous" as Palpatine. He seems more forgiving and hell even "wiser" than him.

This is someone who is allowing their "apprentice" to fail and come back for some more retraining instead of killing him. He seems equally as patient with Hux too.

Who smashed his head in?

He hit his head on the corner of a counter when he was younger, but he likes to tell everyone he got it in a great battle against a thousand Jedi. :o

He ain't stupid. He isn't going to try and fight Luke and Rey on his own. :woot:

I think he's the first fallen Jedi. A Miltonesque Satan figure. That's why Luke went to seek out the first Jedi Temple. He went to learn about Snoke and the first Jedi.

The Jedi have existed for 1000 generations, but we know that there are aliens in the GFFA that can live for centuries, even millennia. Snoke being as old as the Jedi Order is not that far fetched.

Which could mean he is the first Sith as well. One who might have "slept" for a long while, or perhaps he learned to prolong his life using the Dark Side.

Total speculation and probably wrong at that, but I think the first Jedi temple stuff might be tied to the origins of the force. They bring up in...Aftermath, I think it was, that Palpatine had people searching the unknown regions for the origin of the force (or it may have just been the dark side of it) as he believed it was out there somewhere. With Luke's location presumably being in the unknown regions, I think that plotline might be a hint at what is to come in this trilogy.

Or he's well aware that The Emperor was killed by his servant Vader and making Kylo as powerful as his uncle or grandfather would be a bad idea.

I'm loving these ideas about Snoke being the first fallen Jedi/first Sith, and Luke having a skirmish with him. Wasn't one of Lucas's original ideas for the ST, back in the day, that Luke travels the galaxy to find the origins of the Sith? Could have sworn...

Kylo had to pass his test first.

In the novel, Snoke seems genuinely afraid of Luke. After BB8 gets back to the Resistance Snoke seems terrified that the New Republic might be making copies of the map so he orders Hux to destroy the entire system that the Resistance base is located in. Hux wants to destroy only the Resistance base planet and claim the other heavily populated planets in the system for the First Order. It would take a couple hours to figure out exactly which planet the base is on, but Snoke is so afraid that the Resistance will make copies of the map to Skywalker in those hours that he orders the whole system destroyed. He doesn't even want to find Luke. He just wants to ensure no one can go and convince Luke to join the fight.

The way Snoke fears Luke and considers him a formidable enemy makes me nearly 100% sure that Luke kicked Snoke's ass at some point.

And part of dark side training involves a lot of pain. So most likely Snoke is going to punish Kylo plenty for his failures, and through that punishment and pain Kylo will grow stronger and complete his training. With that being said, the novel does specifically point out that Snoke takes on a much more affectionate demeanor when he is speaking to Kylo alone and that he treats Kylo different from Hux. Snoke seems to genuinely care about Kylo. Almost like a father and his son. With what Leia said about Han not knowing what Snoke was doing to their son it makes me think Han was an inattentive father, and Snoke treated Ben like a son which is how he was able to manipulate Ben.

Getting some Avatar/Korra vibes. The first Jedi/Avatar. Kylo already being similar to Zuko.

The way he speaks to Kylo about Darth Vader's life and how much of a great man he is almost makes me think that maybe Snoke was the one who instilled the adoration of Vader onto Kylo. Positive reinforcement by telling him that he's worthy or just like his legendary grandfather probably went a long way as opposed to what he got from his family at home.

The canon material in general has had Luke wanting to learn about the Force, seeking out Jedi temples. I don't know if that was a conscious decision, but it really sets up his post-RotJ journey.

There's a second still out there now too.

Have to admit that the look of Snoke and his voice scared me a bit.
