Well i just came from a Spiderman thread where i said that i find the SM guy kinda ugly. I dont want Brad Pitt, but come on... I'm better looking than that guy and yet Hollywood isnt promoting me to become a superstar actor in a superhero movie that ends up getting paid millions.
You are part of the problem.

In terms of all the flak Hathaway is getting thrown at her in terms of physical appearance, I pretty much feel like this:

The people who were calling her fat and ugly (and I'm not directing this comment at anyone, I haven't spent enough time in this thread to know who those people would be) I think were very misguided, because she's obviously neither.

However, I do think it's fine if people simply feel she doesn't have the kind of look they'd like for Catwoman. I don't think that's insulting at all. This is a visual medium, so the physical appearance is part of your performance. Often times actors rise above the physical aspect and their performances make us look past this. Keaton is a prime example. The man simply did not look like Bruce Wayne. At all. But his performance was good enough that we were willing to look past it.

In my opinion Hathaway really doesn't have a "great" Catwoman look. However, I don't by any means think she's as miscast (physically) as Keaton was for Batman. I'm waiting to see how she looks in the suit, and even then, I may not like how she looks, but if her performance is good I won't mind too much.

And really, while evaluating people purely on a physical level may seem somewhat harsh, it's part of the business. I"m a studying actor myself, and I've come to terms with that fact. I didn't get cast in a production of Permanent Collection last year at my University because I was too short. The director told me I gave a good audition, but the actor he cast in the role opposite me was 6'4 and I was 5'8.

And to clairify, I'm not defending the people who were just bashing her looks for the apparent sake of being petty (those calling her fat and ugly etc.), but I'm referring to the people who have expressed the opinion that they don't think she has the right look.
I feel exactly the same way.

It is not the "dislike" of a choice for an actor....it is the comments made about said choice that is the problem.

If you don't like the choice of Miss Hathaway for the part, there is nothing wrong with that....that is your opinion. But, some of the comments made, are very questionable, and that is the problem...

Misogyny is a very big problem in these boards. Even when you get past the openly misogynist comments that some people make about actresses and women in general, I've noticed that there are a lot of people on these boards who complain whenever there is a love interest in a superhero movie, saying things like "it's just a lame reason to have a woman in this movie. This character does not need a girlfriend." I wonder if these people realize that on top of the fact that their views on women are very backward and caveman like, they are further perpetuating negative stereotypes about comic book fans? It's not like our reputation in regards to women is very good, and when people litter comic movie forums with misogynist comments it does not help.

.....it annoys the crap out of me when fanboys whine about love interests in comic book movies....ESPECIALLY when it comes to Batman. just shows that they dont know jack about the character.

We are not talking about legitament intelligent complaints (I would hope we all know what that entails)...we (the staff) are tired of misogynistic (crude abuse towards women) being expressed so much by many on the board.

Yes there is a conscious effort to stop the misogynistic comments on this site and as a woman on this site, I am very thankful....and whether you think it is a mythical plot against this actor or not....I don't really care, because I don't really give a crap who they gave the part to. But the reality here is this, you keep going on and on about the mods decisions on this thread, you will be heading to subordination infractions....which will end up leading to a probationary ban that very well might be until AFTER this movie hits theaters (if you have SUCH A BIG PROBLEM with it, contact the site owner at CRAVE and let them know)....so my suggestion to you is to chill out with the griping, it will not lead to ANY kind of changes, it will only lead you to a probationary ban. That is not mythical thinking, that is reality....

So keep going this direction, and you might need to enjoy the opening of this movie on another movie site....I would hope that doesn't happen, you are more than welcome to enjoy it here.....without the constant griping about mod decisions. So lets please just enjoy the excitement of the unknown....which also includes how Selena will be portrayed in this movie...Miss Hathaway has been cast, there is no amount of crying that is going to change that....so how about we discuss how we would like for her to portray this character....because whether ya like it or not, she is. :yay:

You got the wrong guy I tell you! The wrong guy! Regwec wasn't going on rants about Hathaway's looks, he simply said he needed to get used to it. There's less misogyny here than you think, and we're not even talking about women in general we're talking about the actress who is cast in a particular role. A character, who I might add, has been drawn with ridiculous levels of physical proportion over the past 50+ years of her printed existence to the point where she adheres to an archetype of beauty. It's almost like trying to find a human face for Aphrodite or Helen, or a mortal to portray Thor or Achilles. There will always be something to disagree on, and I think that fuels discussions rather than stunt them. Hemsworth's probably more masculine than any one else I know personally, and yet he too must inevitably face some criticism regarding his otherwise iconic role. But that's not the point here, you can't just threaten to ban someone for disliking a director's choice of casting, it's what fans are for. Moreover, whatever offense, if any, directed toward Ms. Hathaway has been in good humor, especially from regwec here who never said anything that would ever label him a misogynist, let alone be ban-worthy, at least not on this thread. Others have griped harder.

And this is a discussion thread, we've been following the rules regarding profanity, I don't see any reason behind that caution guys. Whatever happened to "I disagree with what you have to say, but will defend with my life your right to say it" ? Most of us here usually ignore real trolls anyway.

I'm starting to think we really do need more options on that poll :(

The women who post here do deserve every ounce of credit they get and then some, yes. However, they aren't made of stone. I remember Anita18 being particularly upset about the weight comments, and she had every right to be. And that's someone who posts here letting us know how she felt on the matter, it's not going into all of the many, many lurkers/passersby who may have seen and been hurt by that comment that day. I can only speak from my perspective as an American, but here, we have major problems with girls and young women having bulimia, anorexia, depression, and suicidal tendencies, among other things, because of the insanely high standards that our media projects upon them.

I agree that this is an issue that needs to be addressed, and yes snide remarks regarding Hathaway or any one other celebrity might exacerbate that. But lets be honest with ourselves here, Catwoman, the femme fatale from the comics, already does that without needing a film of her own. These characters are created with a 'larger-than-life' quality embedded in them, and I don't think it's a terrible thing per se since extremes in human potential has been a subject of art longer than comic magazines, but some of the cultural pressures are real and such a portrayal does have negative implications. I am saying that this isn't the concern with this thread. Any girl who do suffer from anxiety would know that when someone calls Anne Hathaway "fat" the comment itself is ******ed. But, if as you've said Anita18 has issued a complaint then we really do need to keep the jokes to a more respectable level. The last thing any one here want is to alienate fellow board members, or offend them in anyway. We're all fans of Catwoman, we're all eager for The Dark Knight Rises. (We're all already mad about it). Otherwise, we wouldn't be here.

Stop the car.

I used to get pretty damn upset when people called Maggie a 'butterface.' Maybe you think that is overly sensitive but I thought it was horrible, crude and completely over the line.

Same here. And I don't think she deserved it at all. She looked prettier in some scenes than others, but people who think she should have been a supermodel are missing the point. Bruce could have any supermodel he wanted. He was obviously interested in Rachel for different reasons.

Nicely said, I agree.

We are not talking about legitament intelligent complaints (I would hope we all know what that entails)...we (the staff) are tired of misogynistic (crude abuse towards women) being expressed so much by many on the board.

I understand that completley. And it seems that some of the posters who simply don't think Hathaway has the right look feel they're being targeted. Which I don't think is accurate because, from the few comments I've read (as I said before, I haven't really been following this thread) the Mods were directing their comments at a general group of haters who were making the inappropriate comments.

On a side note, going off something Nave suggested in an off-hand way, would it be possible to add more options to the poll? For example, I don't support or disapprove of Hathaway at the moment. I'm simply unsure. Basically the same way I felt about Ledger when I heard he was cast. Again, I don't really mind her "look" all that much. I think she's fine, but as of now, nothing's she's done has really hit me as Catwoman. (That I've seen her do, I haven't seen all her films). But then again, Ledger hadn't done anything remotely "Joker-ish" when he was cast either.

Nave...Kel's post was not saying that Regwec was being misogynistic...she was saying that his many posts complaining about the mods making posts in here for people to stop the misogyny was on the verge of being insubordination on his part.

We the staff has made the decision that we need to more forcebly make it known that misogynistic remarks are not appreciated not wanted on here. We are making posts all over the site asking people to watch the way this issue. Regwec has taken it upon himself to keep saying that we a re overstepping our bounds to tell people this...we disagree. We think showing less offensive talk for women is a good thing.

Eva Green interview where she was asked about the Catwoman role:

http://blog.moviefone.com/2011/01/26/perfect-sense-eva-green-sundance-interview/

It's interesting that your name keeps popping up on short lists or wish lists, perhaps, for superhero roles. Is that actually something of interest to you?
No, somebody just asked me if I was, like, on the short list for 'Batman' or something, and I was never approached for it. I don't know. I think it's a lot of ********, and people just throw your name onto the Internet or something.

You were on the short list for Catwoman in the next Batman movie.
Really? If only. No.

Is that of interest?
Just Catwoman?

No, in general.
It depends on the director and it's always important that there's another facet, that it's not just like a very strong woman. It's nice to see the other side, the vulnerable side, the most human. So I don't know. If it's a bit cliché or cartoon, I don't know.

So i think that the dude cast as Spiderman is ugly too. Am i misogynist? Why is it that if i comment on someone's looks that makes me a misogynist? If anything the fact that no one is questioning Hathaway's acting proves the respect we all have for her skills. Its just that some people dont like the way she looks. Get over it and stop projecting to your own image. If you feel so insecure about your image join a gym.

JESUS!

Move on....with the discussion of this character please...:yay:

A gym can't fix someone's face and that is what I constantly see attacked around here. Regardless, like the Terminator, you can't be reasoned with on this one so *washes hands of this discussion*

This isn't rocket science guys, saying "I don't think Anne has the right look for Catwoman" is fine, the name calling and insults about her that look like they come out of a fart smelling locker room don't belong here.

Why aren't you banned?
Because of something called freedom of speech. I am not being disrespectful, its just that visuals are a big part of acting and filmmaking. So i happen not to like that dude.

Deal with it. :word:

So since he doesnt break this new law of conduct but simply expresses his disatisfaction to it, one would say that he is not insubordinate, but merely expressing his opinion on the matter. Is he not allowed to do that either?

Honestly, and I'm not defending those who've made rude remarks, I think the physical criticisms levied against actors have less to do with misogyny/conceit than they are simply part of the fan's (over?) attention to detail.

It's the same way with issues of a character's race. While there may have been a few legitimate racists decrying the casting of, say, Michael Clarke Duncan as Wilson Fisk, I think the majority of naysayers were against it simply because he "doesn't look like the comic character."

Most comic characters, especially a hyper-sexualized character like Catwoman, are ideal physical specimens. Therefore, it stands to reason that the most detail obssessed among us (a category I, and I'm sure most of us, fall into occasionally) expect an equally beautiful human to portray that character. Since beauty is so objective, this becomes a major point of contention.

Once again, I don't think this is necessarily the best quality to have, but I also don't think its always intentionally insulting.

Because of something called freedom of speech. I am not being disrespectful, its just that visuals are a big part of acting and filmmaking. So i happen not to like that dude.

Don't push it and don't be a smartass.

Good post Nave Torment.
So since he doesnt break this new law of conduct but simply expresses his disatisfaction to it, one would say that he is not insubordinate, but merely expressing his opinion on the matter. Is he not allowed to do that either?

If a view is repeated ad nauseum it becomes trolling, people need to say what they have to say and move on if all they have to offer is the same point recycled. I don't like the casting for the new Superman, but I have made my view and let the thread be.

Nolan doesn't make a habit of casting typical vapid eye candy for his female roles, as is obvious. So this shouldn't exactly be a shock.

So since he doesnt break this new law of conduct but simply expresses his disatisfaction to it, one would say that he is not insubordinate, but merely expressing his opinion on the matter. Is he not allowed to do that either?

When several mods make posts in a thread telling people that they want the misogynistic posts to stop....and a poster repeatedly complains about the mods making those policy posts...then yes, that is insubordination.

It will be kool when we can get back to talking Catwoman!

It will be kool when we can get back to talking Catwoman!

At the rate the conversation is going, that won't be happening until the NEXT incarnation of this thread. Some have to act like we've personally killed their dogs for asking them to cut the 'male lockerroom' stuff.

There are only 75 posts left before this one would close, so I am closing it now, the mods have made the playing field clear. Someone start a new one and let's get to the topic of the character.
