To be fair, I don't think the episode was meant to be a backdoor pilot to a Suicide Squad spin-off.

Yeah that's why they use Diggle as a character that the audience's familiar with to introduce the squad but I just wish that there was more moments of a squad working together rather than just Diggle/Lyla/Floyd pulling for the whole team.

Great episode, loved this version of The Suicide Squad better than Smallvilles

The only thing I'm wondering is where is Roy? He has shown up like 3 times in the last few episodes.

I can't even remember Smallville's Suicide Squad anymore. I only remember Deadshot, and how silly he was with his high tech bullets that would follow their target.

There's many ways they can go with his character.

Since he's a bomb expert, they can always say that he somehow disarmed the bomb, OR the bomb goes off as he's attempting to disarm it, but in way that turns him into comic Shrapnel.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. If any of them could disarm the bomb and fake his death it would be the bomb expert.

They could Deathlok-ify him. Maybe bring him back on Flash or later, more superhero centric, seasons of Arrow. I mean, he does look like this in the comics.

I believe he was a cowboy as well?

Yeah. He looked really terrible in Smallville. But admittedly, Arrow didn't do such a bang up job at first either. But they really improved his look later on.

Producers made a point to say he was dead and that he wouldn't be coming back.

They can always change their decision, if they can come up with a believable scenario. But I'd prefer he stay dead. I just can't see them bringing him back with the classic Shrapnel look.

And how their Deathstroke looked like John McCain.

The problem with bringing Shrapnel back, is they made his character so bad, can you ever imagine them sitting around the writers desk going 'You know who fans would love to see back? Shrapnel!' Which is a shame, because in my book any Firefly alumni deserves way better.

It would be worthwhile if you could provide a source for the statement. Also, just because they say so now doesn't mean they can't change their mind later on. The off-screen death leaves the option open.

A thought that's crossed my mind is the question whether Waller's use the drone strike was her backup plan and that she had originally planned on having Shrapnel build a bomb to blow up the lab (that was, until he got himself blown up). The reason for my speculation is that it would seem the most logical solution to minimise suspicion and loss of assets. Moreover, it would explain Shrapnel's inclusion on the mission in spite of background (he's the only non-mercenary in the group, i.e. he's not used to following orders) and vocal hostility towards his situation.

I believe this look was based on this...

Really enjoyed this episode. Changing focus while still getting good character development was cool and I really liked the introduction of the Squad and showing Waller's shady morals (though I too think that the actress could do better, still not a bad performance though).
The scene between Dig and Felicity was fantastic, it had a real "real"-feeling to it (haha).
I didn't care for Shrapnel's demise and do not think they should bring him back. Especially not in the very over the top meta version. I didn't hate him as a character but thought that he was a bit too exagerated and comical ( as someone who partly shares what were portrayed as his believes I thought it was a little bit ridiculizing...I'd prefer they let Anarky appear in a serious manner once they've eventually made Ollie into a liberal (which the producers hinted they will do)).
In the next appearance of the Squad (yes I want one) they should focus on their group dynamic (because let's be honest, this time it was all about Deadshot, which was fine as I think the episode was made to present the concept of the Squad to the audience rather than developping it).
For the roster I'd love to see Harley later on (I think as some others said here....it would be very easy to be extremely vague about her past, just hinting at a psycho ex-BF) because I think she's awesome and it would mean the bat-universe exists (you can be very very vague about that too, just hinting at her living in Gotham and having had problems with local crime-fighters...it would be the perfect way to hint at a mostly-complete DC universe without overshadowing Ollie (which by the way I think is not such a problem, as Ollie has many feats which make him awesome on his own even if compared with Bats) and without having to wait for the DC execs to decide on lifting their stupid embargos).
The member whom I'd really like to see next though is Knepper's Clock King. Getting him into the Squad would be so easy. Just say that ARGUS pays for his sister's and his own treatment.
