The Amazing Spider-Man ASM: Stuff You Didn't Like Thread

His turn-around totally logical! You punch the bully in the mouth and they either leave you alone or become your pal.

We're so far removed from the days of teaching our kids to fight back, that we cant even understand the value anymore.

Isn't that how supposedly some great friendships begin? You punch each other in the face, drink a beer together and become pals.

If you punch me in the mouth I'm not your friend and I'm sure as hell not leaving you alone.

I know there were a lot of flaws with this movie and it was wildly unrealistic in every way, but it did bother me that Gwen, a 17-year-old intern, had access to top secret files in a huge corporation. I suppose it was harder for me to stretch my imagination for Gwen because she's supposed to represent reality while Peter's story is more unrealistic from the beginning.

I hate how with the release of this movie lots of people are just dismissing the original trilogy and saying how "Cheesy, bad, etc." they were.

People seem to be using Spiderman 3 for comparisons of the whole trilogy. Which isn't fair....

It's a defense mechanism. If this movie was truly amazing then people wouldn't be justifying the crap in this movie by pointing out crap in the other movies. It makes them feel better that Peter jazz danced in SM3 because that's worse than Peter dunking the ball from the three point line or denting the goal with a football.

I hate nobody rembers I never liked Raimi for Spider-man (although his SM2 was remarkably good).

There is a lot of truth in this. Deflecting is not an adequate defense for something in the confines of a movie that doesn't work. SM3's dancing doesn't fix any of TASM's problems.

I liked how Flash was a Spidey fan and had the Spidey shirt on. But, I thought they "turned" him way too fast to become friends with Peter.

would have made for a more interesting dynamic if he still couldn't stand Peter but was the most ardent Spidey fan in school.

indeed, when they announced they were going back to HS, I thought they would spend more time on the HS dynamics, similar to the Ultimate book.

Do it like the HP films where each film (at least initially) focused on a different year, get a younger cast that we can watch grow ( and grow with ), and show their journey throughout HS and their relationships/dynamics.

Flash Thompson was never shown to suddenly be a nice guy...just not a complete loss as a human being, and at the end, he and Peter had Spider-Man in common. As for how extreme he was at the beginning...it's like some of you have never encountered a real bully.

Yes they would. Because that's how fanboys compare things, because most of them can't put their thoughts into logical arguments.

Yes, because it is totally unreasonable to think that people may not like Raimi’s trilogy in and of itself, or that after seeing another version, decided they liked the new movie over the old trilogy. But no, everyone’s opinion is false and is only borne out of juvenile intentions.

I liked Raimi’s first two films. Loved them even. But my initial enjoyment of them didn’t blind me to the many issues the films had. Raimi’s two films are the only movies I can think of that I fast forward through if I even happen to watch them. They just don’t hold up on repeat viewings, especially during scenes that don’t actually involve Spider-Man. Most of the Peter/MJ/Aunt May scenes are painful to watch. I knew this and felt this way LONG before ASM was even announced.

Do I still enjoy Raimi’s films despite their faults? Absolutely. But acknowledging the issues is in no way a defense tactic for ASM. ASM has its own problems too, but (to me) those problems don’t cause me to groan or want to “skip to the good parts”. Like Michael Keaton’s Batman, Tobey’s Spider-Man is still loved by me and will always be my “first” Spidey. ASM is just a new and fresh take on that. You don’t need to feel defensive about that, because there’s nothing to be offended about. People liking a newer version won’t take your love of the original trilogy away.

Watch the Amazing Spider-man, and then go watch Spider-man. Then tell me it ain't cheesy. With the dorky Peter Parker, and the hokey dialogue.

A guy who beats the crap out of weak people for fun isn't going to care when one of them loses an uncle. That's just not believable.

Sounds like you haven't encountered many.

This film's faults have nothing to do with SM1-3....ZERO. For people to bash SM1-3 for the inadequacies in this film is a defense mechanism. Some can't stand to say that the basketball dunk scene was utter corn laiden cheese so they instead default to talk about SM1-3's corn laiden cheese as a means to justify inadequacy.

If you didn't like SM1-3 and loved this movie then the last thing on your mind should be things that happened in SM1-3. But no...that doesn't happen. The reason for that is that this movie obviously is far from perfect so the faults in this movie are being weighed against the faults in SM1-3. If this movie garnered critical and fan praise across the board...no one would be bashing SM1-3.

If you love SM1-3 or 1-2 then this movie had a bar to reach and comparisons are apt. If your new car isn't as good as your old car then you relive what your old car was like. If your new car is way better than your old car then you don't give a **** about your old car anymore.

both the Raimi films and TASM are far from perfect. They all have flaws, and things that I wish were done differently.

but, on the whole, I find myself still preferring the Raimi films (especially the 1st 2) over TASM.

what TASM gets wrong are way worse than what the Raimi films got wrong......imo......of course.

It is cheese. Raimi does cheese and it works because the comics are cheese. Raimi made a comic book movie and he did it splendidly. Avengers is a comic book movie and Whedon did the same. Spider-Man is meant to be light, colorful, fun and exciting...and Raimi nailed it with inspiration from the golden and silver age Spider-Man.

and I like dorky Peter more than jerky Peter.......

I don’t get how it is ok to make comparisons to Raimi’s trilogy when you liked those films, but not when you didn’t like them. THAT reeks of a defensive mechanism FAR more than what you’re complaining about – you’re obviously just not wanting to hear anyone talk bad about the films you love. (I love Raimi's films, too, but they are FAR from perfect, and I have NO problem admitting that, nor hearing others discuss it)

This a discussion board. You know, a place where people discuss things. Raimi’s trilogy is a huge part of SHH – hell, SHH wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for those films. That alone is justification enough for Raimi’s film to be brought up. Secondly, both franchises are about Spider-Man, to say that you can’t or shouldn’t compare them is like saying you shouldn’t compare 616 Spider-Man to Ultimate Spider-Man. Sure, they’re different universes, but they’re still about the same character, and we as fans are therefore justified in comparing them.

You ALWAYS compare something new to something old, whether you realize it or not. Your new car analogy? Hell yes you compare it with your old one. “It’s got better gas mileage.” “More leg room”. “It doesn’t smell like gym socks and shame.” Yes, over time you’ll forget about the old car, but initially, comparisons WILL be made and ARE justified.

Nothing is absolute. Most bullies aren’t unrepentant, evil little ****s. They have psychological/emotional issues that cause them to act out. And yes, things CAN cause them to snap out of it, or see that someone is hurting and offer condolences. They may act like jerks, but they’re still human.

In high school, there was a guy who was just a total dick to me. I wouldn’t call him a bully persay, he just didn’t like me for some reason and made sure I knew it on a regular basis. When a family member unexpectedly died of cancer, he laid off and eventually even apologized. We didn’t end up as “friends” but we never had a problems after that. But wait, that’s totally unrealistic, so it must have all been in my head.

After Peter humiliated Flash, Flash saw that Peter was on equal footing – he wasn’t that shy, weird and defenseless kid Flash thought he was. He gained respect for Peter, which allowed him to be more open to seeing Peter’s pain. Remember, this happened in the comics - Flash did become Peter's friend, and in the film, all Flash did was try to apologize (and it sounded like he was even going to sympathize with Peter's grief, which makes it even more understandible).

it felt like the Flash in TASM was a bully to others because he, too, lost someone, and was taking out his grief/frustration/anger on others.......

The Raimi movies are done. They have come and gone. They aren't going to change so what is there to defend if a movie is better? If ASM was better to me than SM1 then I would be talking about what ASM did right...not talking about what SM1 did wrong.

You didn't get my point.

You don't continually harp on how your old car sucks if your new car is so much better. Haha how dumb would it be to tell other people everyday how much your old car sucked if you are driving around in a Porsche. You enjoy your new car and you forget about your old car. This isn't about what you yourself think to yourself because we can't do that cause it's the Internet. We have to tell others. So you were driving a Ford Festiva and now you are driving a Porsche. What do some people choose to do? They choose to highlight what sucked about the Ford Festiva.

"Feels better, doesn't it?" Did people miss that line?

and speaking of Flash, since he's a Spidey fan in TASM, don't you think he'd be able to figure out Peter is Spidey, especially after Peter demonstrated some crazy moves when he challenged him on the court.

I don't think I've ever personally compared the faults of SM3 to TASM...

I actually compare TASM to SM1, not SM3.

I don't understand this... can't people like both things, but prefer one of them to the other?
