Yeah I saw that picture. Then I saw this.

And he still looks nothing like Jake Gyllenhaal.

Well the fact they aren't twins doesn't change the fact that in the modern middle east you can find people with skin tones as light as American and European Caucasian skin tones, and with a variety of features. The middle east isn't made up of any one specific skin color or jaw line or nose or hair type etc, nor was the Persian Empire which stretched all the way into the Caucasus. Like it or not, not every person in the Persian empire or the modern middle east fit snugly in a stereotypical look.

This notion that ancient empires the size of the Persian Empire were made up of people with one specific look is as naive as expecting the Roman Empire to only be made up of Italian looking people or the U.S. or EU to be made up of only stereotypical white people.

And when dealing with a fictional character in a fictional story based in an empire that was massive it's silly to get hung up on skin tones or a jaw line or any specific racial features. It's even more silly when the story itself involves magic. Last I checked magic and time travel wasn't a part of the Persian empire either. The film isn't based on a person that existed, the film isn't a history film, and the film involves magic and fantasy. I don't think Jake's features breaks the realism anymore than it was already shattered by the story and plot itself.

Jesus Christ, if you think it's so stupid then why the **** do you insist on chain posting about it? Go find a thread you're interested in and stop stinking this one up.

He thinks it's stupid now, because he is wrong. But I don't want to derail this thread anymore than it has been. POP is not worth arguing over.

Too many americans think everyone in the middle east has dark brown skin

Americans have also distorted Caucasian to only meaning 'Aryan'. It's kind of disgusting. If you told the average Murican that middle easterns are also Caucasians they would give you dirty looks.

Not at all. The guy you posted about looks Middle-eastern. jake Gyllenhaal does not and cannot realistically pass off as Middle Eastern.

I think this is stupid because this argument is derailing the thread topic.

I think this is stupid because people are defending the casting of white actors in a film like Prince of Persia by pointing out that there are Persians and Middle Easterners who look white. IMHO, that doesn't excuse the white washing of characters throughout Hollywood or excuse the lack of casting of minority actors in major roles in films. I think it's a faulty point of view.

Exactly. How about you, IDK cast a Persian/Iranian actor in the Prince of PERSIA film. Don't tell me that there aren't talented actors from that country, because I can think of at least one right away.

Here, I found the Prince of Persia thread for you. Now you don't have to waste precious tumblr time searching for it. meanwhile the rest of us are free to discuss the Assassin's Creed movie. It's win-win!

Am I the only one thinking that having a canon story with a seperate character encourages the movie's real world plot to actually matter to the story in a major way? Right now, most of the post-Desmond games seem to be delaying for all their worth in the real world, since addressing the elephant in the room of Juno's revival would force them to change their yearly-game formula. We've now had three featureless modern day protagonists who are just punching the clock until they get mobbed up with our two factions.

Launching a successful film adaptation would almost require a reason for the audience to invest in the modern day story, since the premise is still very high-concept.

Let's continue the discussion from here.

The problem with the franchise is they are doing nothing with Juno's revival in the present day and that storyline is going nowhere.

Everything post III has been treading water in the modern day game.

I'm guessing this one will be a chase the Apple story, so it's nice and simple for audiences.

Everytime someone brings up Silent Hill movie, it makes me look up Radha Mitchell and see what she has done lately. She was so hnnngh. One of those actress who had every hollywood check mark, but got no play with better directors/movies.

I keep hoping that the modern day story takes some logical steps forward; show us some parkour-heavy conflicts between Assassins and Templars in a modern setting like São Paulo (I keep picturing an Assassin with Capoeira skills facing down a Templar with Brazilian jiu-jitsu while racing down the rooftops of the city), have the two society's take steps to counter or coordinate with Juno (I keep hoping we'll see a Templar faction break off that is alarmed at Juno's awakening and puts the war with the Assassins on hold to try and deal with it), and maybe play around with the genetic memory idea for maximum fun.

Picture this: a subject, a character we have built up for us as a fairly lazy and uninvolved individual, uses the Animus for one of the two sides, and starts to experience the Bleed they mention in the games, where your memory starts to take in the ancestors memories as its own. Have the modern day character's arc galvanize them to become more active, only to be severely wounded in a manner that will almost certainly leave them brain dead. They're put back in the Animus as therapy, like in AC:R, but this time when they wake up, they've finished the life of the ancestor and the Bleed has almost completely overtaken their mind. We've now got a resurrected historical assassin in the modern world...

Which is exactly the kind of inevitable pseudo-science hijikns that Minerva and Juno keep using to communicate with modern day humans, and the new war moves ahead.

Well, it's like I said earlier. The synopsis basically comes right out and says they'll be exploring the "bleed effect" that was presented in the earlier games stating that Callum gains abilities to fight the Templars in the present, so yes, the films will be exploring the modern day setting somewhat. Maybe this is their answer to the Desmond complaints. Playing the games in a modern setting would take away from what made the games so unique was the most common problem people seemed to have with where they were heading. Perhaps they think this can be explored in the movieverse in a more compelling and interesting way. That has me really excited because I think I was one of three people that actually enjoyed the modern day portions of the franchise.

I think that's been due to all the backlash fans had to the modern day story though. They've freely admitted they didn't originally plan to kill off Desmond, and I genuinely feel that has been one of the few major missteps of the games. The Sage storyline the two previous games have followed seemed...idk...tacked on just to have SOMETHING from the modern day there, but they certainly haven't evolved the modern day mythology at all. I almost wish they had gone all out and connected AC to the world of Watch Dogs and made that a pseudo future AC without the name.

I think Ubisoft needs to hold off on making Assassin's Creed being a yearly thing. When the game first premiered it was so fresh and inventive. Now we've lost all that.

Yeah, I kind of felt the modern day storyline was building to making a sandwich of action in the game: you start the game playing as Desmond in modern times, use the Animus and somebody else's past to find out something, then have another level in modern times.

I keep picturing the game using the two plots to tell the same story, like have a Templar using the Animus discover that an alliance with the Assassins worked out in the past, an Assassin discovers Juno using the Animus, and we get a team up. But really, I'd just settle for some kind of movement.

THIS. THIS exact ignorant sentiment is what we're trying to get you to drop.

And I also have a problem with Hollywood whitewashing, but I've never had a problem with white actors playing white characters.

Since ancient Persians WERE white, I've never had a problem with Jake's portrayal.

Here's a snippet for you to enlighten your stereotyping brain:

Apparently people are a bit confused. Arabs are Caucasians but Caucasians does not equal Indo-European. Arabs are Semitic. Which is why they are characterised by dark hair tan skin and dark eyes. Iranians and North Indians ARE Indo European. They come from the same family line as present day Europeans.Arabs are not related to Indo Europeans as the origin of Semites is present day Iraq while Indo Europeans originated from the area between the Black and Caspian Sea. Semites spread East and South to form the Ancient tribes of Arameans and Hebrews in the East and Arabs to the South. Indo Europeans went in all Directions. Those who settleed in Turkey became the Hittites(if you check ALL Historical Records you will find that Hittites did have blondes and redheads.Even the Egyptians say so) Since the Hittites lived next to the Semitic Arameans , Intermixing often occured.Ever noticed Syrians have an extremely high frequency of blondes and Reheads???And All Syrians are lighter skinned than their Arab counterparts? This is partly the reason, especially for regions which never saw Crusader settlement like Northern Syria. This also applies to Lebanon.
Central Asia and Iran were settled by a community that had a high frequency of Blondes and Redheads. The Chinese do have records of interacting with these people(Tocherians were redheads and pale). However, later events saw several changes in the demographic make up. First was the migration of Turkic peoples to Central Asia, the resulting intermixing saw most Caucasian features disappear from the general populations all except the South, where you will find that a large number of Tajiks ,Pashtuns and remote tribes in Afghanistan are actually more lighter than most South Europeans. The change in physical features in Iran and Turkey is actually very recent, in the 14 to 15th Century(Unlike India where the Indo Europeans settled quite Early and mixed so intensely with the natives that caucasian features have all but vansihed except in parts of North West India).Turkey was invaded by the Seljuk Turks that saw the nation shift from a predominantly Greek Speaking(with Celtic tribes like the Galatians) to a Turkic speaking nation. The Turks gave the natives 3 choices, mix with us, enslavement or death, most chose the former.Iran saw 75% of its population annihilated by the Mongols who settled in Iran as well as several Turkic peoples which is why Caucasian features rapidly vanished from the Iranian populace. Azeris as well are actually Iranians who were Turkified(Azeris and Turks do not resemble their Asian counterparts at all!!) thus Yes, A long time ago, Iranians were as Nordic as present day East ,West and North Europeans, Intermixing however altered their features, their language is the only surviving link to their Indo European ancestry.

Hopefully they can insert Watch_Dogs into the yearly slot and slow down Assassin's Creed.

I was hoping that the main character would be Altair. Also middle-east setting would be more interesting. I really hope this will be good. Michael Fassbender is a great actor.

I saw some set photos on Facebook and it looks like it could be a middle-eastern setting.

Official synopsis says that it's set in Spain:

"Callum Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day."

Yeah, I knew that. But I'm wondering if the whole thing will stay in Spain.

I really should start playing Assassin's Creed games again. I still haven't beaten AC4 and haven't bought Unity. I'm not going buy any game of this series on release anymore because every year is just too much. My interest has just been fading away. I wait when they are cheap.

Don't buy Unity. It was such a step back from Black Flag, imo.
