The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Based on ASM2's box office and quality, was rebooting a mistake?

How do you feel about ASM2?

  • I enjoyed it and I'm satisfied with the rebooted series

  • I would've preferred Sony do SM4/SM5/SM6 with a new director and cast

  • I would've preferred Raimi do one final movie (SM4) then recast SM5

  • I would've preferred Raimi do 2 or 3 more SM movies with Tobey and Dunst

lol I think that brother me more then the dancing because with that it was trying to make mj dancing where with the cokies he didn't really have a good dark reason for that lol.

He was using that neighbor girl that clearly had a crush on him. It was just showing him act a way he never would under normal circumstances.

I gusse but he was still to nice over all in that sences. I didn't mind when he hits mj because that was a dark moment of something he wouldn't do and a wake up call to him.

Any way back to box office what do you think sony is thinking right now?

They're thinking it wasn't their fault.

The dancing was way worse I don't even get what was wrong with the other thing. Also the part in sm3 where he is eating cokies and talking on the phone is really stupid.

When the movie is released on dvd/bluray I'll make a gif of the scene where the electricity closes the gap between electro's teeth :D

I'm happy with the rebooted series as I love ASM1 (I would still like to see ASM2 again before I'm fully decided on it). SM3, whether deserved or not, left a rather negative impression on the Raimi trilogy. I think rebooting was a good idea but maybe not from the start again, even though I loved ASM1, its a story which had only been told -one variation at least- fairly recently.

lol yes it is, I think SM3 is better than TASM 2 in most aspects. The only thing people rely on against Spiderman 3 is the dance scene and Emo Peter.

Well the rest of the jazz club scene, the total waste of Gwen/Eddie Brock/Venom, Sandman killing Uncle Ben, lazy exposition by the butler, Mary Jane getting kidnapped a third time in the franchise, the painful singing scene from Kirsten Dunst, the lame snowboarder GG2 costume, the tired love roller-coaster subplot, the terrible crying scenes and of course the infamous emo dancing scene that would've even ruined The Dark Knight.

the writing was the problem for SM3 but to say it was sonys fault because they tipped raimis hand to do stuff he didn't want is abit far fetched because raimi still wrote the script with his brother wasn't it? he was the one who was guiding this script and story, now we pretty much got alot of his typical raimi formula (montages) but we also got weird stuff like harry making MJ break up with peter in a park as part of his evil plan and she goes along with it while he watches from a far distance

with TASM2 it seemed to suffer the same problem as TASM where some very intense or interesting looking scenes were shot but were never used or might not ever see the light of day, and the big question is whats with all the last minute changes and why are they filming so many different versions of scenes, i know people say its normal in film making but when the studios are using one they think will draw in the audience with the trailer and then not use them scenes are all... its abit much, i personally think its the studio because it sounds like alot of the more darker moments they filmed for TASM2 (peter beating harry up after gwens death) was likely felt to be to dark by the studio

I disagree if the movie was getting good reviews it would be doing a lot better. There have been 7 batman movies and only 5 spider man movies and yet dark knight rises made a little over a billion and batman is not even has popular has spider man and didn't have 3d. It is all because the last 3 spider man movies have been consider bad, ok and bad. If the movie where getting great reviews it would be a event again. Movies don't just make money over night you bulid up to it form the earyler movies in a franchise and when 3 movies in a row have not gotten good reviews people are going to not trust the next movie.

The biggest distinction Batman has from Spider-man is he was given a rest after B&R in 1997. That left a bad taste in people's mouths and the franchise appeared dead. When that reboot occurred...EIGHT YEARS LATER...it introduced an origin that had never been told and brought back a darker tone the Schumacher films had abandoned. The Spider-man franchise barely missed a beat between interpretations. And while SM3 was the weakest script in that original trilogy, there was no indication from box office receipts that the cast was the issue.

So the reboot did surprise audiences, especially in recycling an origin already told. And ASM2 was released less than two years after that reboot. So audiences have never been able to miss the hero to even rebuild interest as the last Batman franchise did. And as I had said earlier, franchise films pay for the failures or successes of the previous installment. So ASM2 was going to get depressed receipts no matter how good it was. It didn't have an Avengers movie to feed off like Cap, Thor, and Iron Man did. Plus being away for less than two years really left little demand for a sequel so soon.

What should concern fans at this stage, is the negative perception now getting etched in stone by both the industry and general audience. While I don't think ASM2 is a bad film by any stretch, it's distinction for being the first film to completely bomb with critics and make the lowest tally to date in the series will resonate for some time. While I think the series just needs a rest, perception is sometimes a bigger issue. At this stage if ASM3 gets made, it will likely need to be for considerably less money and will probably mothball the franchise for a while if it comes out with the dates they had planned. I think the saturation point is high and Sony needs to step away for several years at least.

I haven't seen ASM 2. I really didn't feel like I needed to see ASM so I waited until Netflix to watch it and I thought it was good. I made the decision with the amount of movies being released every summer to pick and choose which ones I go to. I usually am interested in seeing any "tent pole" movie. However, expectations and reviews usually help me choose.

I have seen movies that didn't get stellar reviews but I was interested in. X-3, MOS, etc. I was on the fence about First Class which is why I went to see it after the reviews it go.

I just have no desire to see ASM 2 and the reviews solidified it. I'm almost at that point with X-Men, if DOFP are getting the same reviews as ASM 2 then there's a good chance this will wait until Netflix. Of course that also has to do with the quality of the X-Men films.

Unfortunately this is one of if not the biggest cash cow for Sony and I don't see them wanting to lose this franchise to Marvel so we will see one of these movies pop up every few years.

Personally, with the reviews that this movie got, I'm glad it's at least making less domestically then saw Captain America: TWS which I feel is one of the best comic book movies to date.

Completely true. Doesn't change the fact that Amazing 2 is a way better picture than Spider-Man 3. That's not even up for debate.

It is apparently up for debate because ASM2 has a lower critical score and much lower box office than SM3. Fan aside, critics and the general audience think otherwise. What we think means nothing in the long run.

Unfortunately, chaseter is right.

I would have like a Spider man 4 and Let Raimi redeem himself I thought he had that right since Venom was forced on him

I hate the reboot saw both films and they were Meh to me especially another origin movie and just saw the second one this weekend

man only good thing about it was Dane Dahaan the the Gwen Stacey arc which was giving away in the trailers

Also you have to consider the danger of Oscorp getting their hands on his blood for their own nefarious purposes.Peter already learned that from giving Connors help with his equations last film, remember? (and they say this kid never learns anything!)

Except Lizard wasn't "OsCorp" he was one employee who went nuts. The Indian guy wanted to inject people with the serum, but we don't know if Peter knows that.

he was "fired" he didn´t have the company anymore...maybe the money but to gather all that equpment and scientists...expensive...

True. I'd imagine he would think that it would be worth it though.

Spider-Man 3 did leave a very enthusiastically negative impression the Raimi films.

And thanks to TASM2, the Raimi trilogy is being reevaluated this month for its strengths and qualities. So, in that sense, the reboot was very helpful.

Batman Forever sold way more tickets than Batman Begins. I guess that means Batman Forever is better. What we think means nothing.

Superman Returns has a way higher critic score than MOS. I guess that pretty much determines SR is superior. What the fans think means nothing.

Box office and critic ratings can both be misleading.

Sometimes the fans are the best judges of quality.

If people start to overestimate the quality of SM1 and SM3 that is only helpful to the Raimi fanbase and no one else.

Two words trump all.

Doctor Kafka.

Nope

I wasn't able to see this film opening weekend, I saw it the following Wednesday. After hearing all the complaints, crying and moaning over certain things, like Kafka, I was shocked when I realized just how exaggerated people's complaints were. Typical of fanboys though.

Dr. Kafka was fairly godawful but was nowhere near as bad as most fanboys made him out to be. His accent was a bit over the top but I was expecting much worse.

I think it goes down to the smell test. Years ago the highest grossing movies often were well received. Now you have movies like the last few Pirates, TPM and Transformers who are making huge box office numbers with mediocre to bad ratings.

I think there's usually a general consensus about a movie. With ASM 2, it appears that it's one of those movies that I think Chaseter said previously fall within that 40-60% rating where people are going to either like it or dislike it.

People liked SM 1 - a lot. The fan rating for that on RT is so obviously rigged after the fact. I wouldn't be shocked if it was done when ASM came out by some over zealous fans of ASM to make the film look better in comparison. 34 million ratings when no other movie even comes within 30 million of that? Come now.

It was. The IMDb scores for Raimi's movies also dropped in 2012 after TASM came out.

I remember that it started plummeting in the handful of months leading up to the release of ASM.
