It might crawl its way to $900m, but $1B is well and truly gone. There are literally hundreds of millions of dollars WB has lost with this movie.

And based on the international box office, $900 is looking to be a longshot as well.

Not only that but Forbes' China film industry watcher thinks it's BO collapse there is very bad mojo for JL.

I think that is when we can call "failure". You can make little money, but a good reception (late WOM, or home video sales) is money later in sequels and spin offs. Bad WOM/reception is poison for the franchise, you can make tons of money but if the public won't trust you again, your film (in fa franchise building situation like this) failed.

Yeah, the Chinese audiences have vehemently rejected this movie, and considering that China is poised to take over as the biggest market in terms of Box office, this spells doom for the DCU.

Can people stop with the drama?

Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows, Part II made only $47.2 million ok its second weekend.

It was a well-received film by critics and audiences and grossed $1.3 billion.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is guaranteed to make more than $47 million this weekend.

It's fine.

I think Hollywood is never going to fully figure China out, they have a film taste which doesn't always match with western nations.

Well there's you're problem right there.

what ought to have been at least a $175 million china haul for batman v superman (marvel’s avengers – age of ultron earned $236 million there) will instead be a comparatively meager tally in the low $90 millions, less than marvel’s ‘minor’ pictures ant-man and guardians of the galaxy earned from their respective 2015 and 2014 prc releases.
yikes!

Isnt china always a wildcard though? I don't see how this was a guarantee to earn big there.

Yeah, and this film is outperforming that film ...

What's your point?

You said HP was well received by critics and audiences so it managed to get to $1.3 billion. Looking at the 29% for BvS and the B cinemascore from audiences, that's not gonna happen.

77% decline in Britain, 87% in China.

To be fair, batman/superman have always had a China hurdle. Low china was predicted by various people.
It was one of the things talked about alot in the lead up discussions. Those marvel ones that were mentioned have benefited from that audience over the years. WB really should look into that.
That being said, didn't China pull like 75% of theaters for their own produced films this week?

Probably the fact that it isn't outperforming DH2. DH2 made more money on weekdays than BvS, giving it about a 20 million dollar edge over BvS by the time it reached the second weekend. Beyond that, the foreign numbers cannot even begin to be compared. DH2 made nearly 1 billion on its own overseas. With every major foreign market opened (and equally front loaded based on the foreign dropoffs) BvS will be lucky to make 500 million overseas. Your comparison is faulty, friend.

HP and TDH had to deal with Captain America. This film has zero competition and worse yet, it's tanking overseas.

There is no other way to frame this other than a box office disappointment. WB expected a billion dollar film, now it looks like they will struggle to break even.

Harry Potter had the OS market to prop it up. BvS doesn't have that luxury. Or the good graces of fans and critics.

Plus did Harry open in all the big market territories at the same time? That really made BvS look amazing the first week, but everything after that looks doubly bad. Nothing is spread out.
