In July of 2012, for the first time ever in CBM history, a Spider-Man film and a Batman film will be in direct competition with each other.

With a little less the 3 weeks separating their release dates, comparisons, no matter how precendented, will be drawn.

So, this thread has been created so that we can discuss the films (and the characters/comics they are adapting) on our way to July and analyze each film's pros, cons, and advantages over the other (if any).

Also, after each film, discuss what each did right, or wrong, in comparison to the other.

I am loving the new take on Spiderman. I love how gritty it feels and I have already warmed up to Peter and Gwen. I am already loving Gwen far more than Mary Jane from the previous films. I also like how Peter has a nice sense of humour in this one too. I just can't see myself disliking this one.

Agreed. As a Spidey fan, I was initially wary of a reboot but it has turned out very well and I'm looking forward to it.

Also, as a Nolan Bats fan, there's no denying the similarities it appears shares with how Batman Begins was executed in regards to telling an origin.

I'm not sure I have the capacity to care about this film until I see TDKR. Pretty sure TDKR will ruin my life. But I'm sure I will see this. :funny:

True, we need an emotional support group here on July 21st.

This is the year the nerds become even more emotionally ruined. Damn. :funny:

It's all about whether the tone of it hits my sweet spot. Nolan's Batman films captured most of what I love about the character. Webb's Spider-Man, at least from what I've seen so far, doesn't really fit my mind's eye image of Spidey. It feels very early '90s, very McFarlanesque. I could see the Clone Saga being introduced into this series. Which is all fine, a valid interpretation of the character. It's just not something I'm particularly interested in. I loved Raimi's films because of, not in spite of, their goofy charm.

It's definitely going to ruin my wallet.
I'm taking off a week of work just to see this twice a day for 7 days.

And I'm buying EVERYTHING they have in stores. I'm not going to be stupid like in 2008 and just buy a couple of stupid things here and there. I'm taking this opportunity to really appreciate this last movie with Zen-like concentration.

And I wish I could pay for a private screening at the theater. I totally would. A private screening just for me, so I can sit in total peace and silence and just meditate.

OMG, I also took a week off from work for this :D

I missed out on Seeing TDK in IMAX, and I regret it all the time.

I Will not make that mistake again.

I agree. Keep in mind that I'm not really a Spidey fan (but then again, I'm not a Batman fan either :funny:) but I'm so excited for this. I hope Gwen is a strong character and not just the typical damsel in distress - something fresh.

I agree that it shares similarities with Begins. I'm not familiar with the comics, but it looks it will be faithful to Peter Parker's character and the universe. It will respect the Spiderman character and mythos while also giving its own take on the story. I also love how Spiderman fights - I like how it has practical effects and the fighting looks and sounds so surreal.

This year is a great time for fans of Avengers, Spiderman and Batman - a great time indeed. I'm going to really enjoy the ride. Marc Webb's film will be part of the rollercoaster ride that is 2012.

Yup. I think that in the time since its announcement, TASM has definitely earned the right to be be a part of the "Big 3" of 2012.

Finally, someone who gets it!

I'm taking off Thursday, Friday, and Monday of that week.

I'm also buying out a perfect square in the center of the IMAX, so that no one can sit in front of me or behind me. Only friends will be on the sides. :o

I think the B.O. battle between Batman and Spidey would have been much more interesting if this was Raimi's Spiderman vs Nolan's Batman. However, with Spidey being a reboot thats coming off his weakest film, and Batman being in his last Nolan film that is coming off the pop culture phenomenon that was TDK, the B.O. competition won't be very fair. That said, I think ASM can be great and the second trailer looks really good. I'm pretty confident that I will thoroughly enjoy both films.

I'm anticipating Spidey. It looks to be following in the footsteps of Batman Begins, which in my opinion is a good thing. I'd like a respectable comic book franchise to follow after this is over. Man of Steel gives me hope too, though I'm not as big of a fan of superman as Bats or Spidey... IMO he's especially lacking in his rogues gallery compared to those two.

I think Batman wins when it comes to hoarded content.

Oh, as for box office competition I don't think there's gonna be any... your fan base is taking the reboot thing way, waay too personally whereas Nolan's Batman has a massive cult following.

The theme seems to be now that for CB movies that were initially released and didn’t meet the expectation the studios had hoped for with fans due to the characterizations of characters and what not get a reboot. And from this it seems as if they took the time to get it right and stick closer to source material. X-men 1st class to me is a better movie out of the X universe for this reason. My question is, why didn’t they just do that from jump?

This new Spider Man movie looks really really good and it looks like they have treated the Parker/Spiderman character with much respect and I feel it will be closer to the source material characterization of the Spidey we know and love from the comics. Same thing now with Man of Steel. These appear to be the movies they should have made from the beginning.

I’m rooting for TAS, it looks awesome and I’m def going to go see this!

As for the vs battle, I have complete trust that TDKR will be the victor at the end of it all. :)

But The Amazing Spiderman will do great at the box office nonetheless.

Glad to see there hasn't been any hate spewing in this thread. I hate the whole Marvel vs DC thing. Is it that out-of-the-norm to be excited for The Avengers, The Amazing Spiderman AND The Dark Knight Rises?

If ASM and Avengers were closer in release dates, I wonder if their respective fans have Marvel vs. Marvel debates.

There is so much ignorant unjustified uninformed hate towards this film that i just want it to be good so bad. The amount of egg on people's faces after x-men first class was so sweet.
