^Totally agree.

The Academy of votes could use an influx of youth and evolution of what is "Oscar-worthy".

Black Panther will pay the bills to fund those "Oscar" worthy films though. . . .

I would say financial success alone determines that it's the best picture in the studios eyes.

The tastes of Academy voters have grown ever more baroque and peculiar as the members have aged. The more niche and unappealing movie is to tbe GA, the likelier it is to find favor on the awards circuit. Hollywood takes pride in nominating films that aren't popular, as if that proves them better than average folks. There.s a reason why the next crop of Oscar nominees can be predicted by the press at the start of every year. The "Oscar Bait"formula is very well known.by all the Indies and specialty producers.

You could just as easily accuse the masses of being of a limited taste as well, and you can even more easily predict which will be the biggest films of the year in BO. Also, films like Three Billboards aren't odd or obscure, it's just that the masses don't generally go out to see low key dramas, no matter how well made they are.

They added a bunch of younger and minority people to the Academy a couple years ago to diversify the Academy. I think with films like Mad Max: Fury Road being nominated as well as say Get Out, it shows.

It makes sense in a way, though. The weird indie movies that the Academy love so much are created specifically to make impact or illicit emotions. Not make money.

So they tend to be more emotionally resonant, instead of the money grabbing movies that leave something to be desired from an artistic perspective.

A Wrinkle in Time already has a rough tomato meter. Which sucks. But at least shatters the notion that Black Panther got good reviews because critics were too scared to give it a negative review.

If anything that deserves an Oscar nomination for Black Panther, it would be for best song and score.

I love how they do the Black Panther salute everywhere now. It's at the 35 second mark.

Could be in with a shout there. Costume too surely.

Costume Design may very well win an Oscar.

I also think it has a shot to get bigger noms if this is a weak year. As I said in the awards threads...

The critical reception of this movie is incredible for a comic book film.

There's been plenty of movies nominated over the years that audiences thought were just "good", but benefitted from critics and Hollywood loving it.

Costume Design and Cinematography also deserve an Oscar nom, but I really want BP to be the first CBM to receive a Best Picture selection and I think it deserve it too.

Cinematography has two issues working against it.
The CGI heavy backdrops and the first fight being under lit. What she did was great, but its not showing off as much of her skill since they weren't using enough practical stuff.

I also wonder how much better would the fights have been captured if Coogler had brought back the Creed cinematographer Alberti. She did a spectacular job with that film. Maybe would have been more comfortable than Morrison as well (she also did The Wrestler)

Morrison still did great though.

It's not the first time T'Challa has shown mercy either; in the first Warrior's Fall challenge he could have killed M'Baku, but instead of ending his life T'Challa persuaded M'Baku to yield for the sake of his people, and later on he earned M'Baku's alliance. Personally, I think T'Challa is a strong leader not because he kills as he pleases, but by showing mercy he proves himself to be a leader, because it takes a lot more to spare the life of his enemies than to kill them.

I think the events in CW had an impact as well. T’Challa mentions at the end to Zemo that in trying to kill Bucky in revenge for his father he almost killed the wrong man, and it made him stop seeking vengeance and to think more clearly. Hence why he spared Zemo instead of killing him.

He made it sound like if he had killed Bucky in a rage, and then discovered he killed the wrong person, it would have wounded him deeply.

So Killmonger had a practical suit? I assumed it was CGI mostly.

And hopefully all the people that thought Ava would do a better job than Ryan can **** now too.

Also those who think critics were afraid to give Ryan's movie bad or mediocre reviews.

TO BE FAIR, Wrinkle in Time is much harder to adapt for screen.

I honestly do think Ava would have been just as good as Ryan if not more so. The visuals for Wrinkle at least look on point and the effects look a bit more polished than Panther's. I remember people having concern about Ava when it comes to action scenes, but the irony is that's one area that Coogler turned out to be the weakest in.
