Black Panther The Official News and Speculation Thread - Part 10

Speaking of Dunkirk, I caught up with a very happy Christopher Nolan at the Govs Ball and showed off my lunch box. His brilliant WWII epic took three Oscars, earning him many shout-outs from winners onstage. It was the second-best haul of the night after Shape’s four, even though there was disappointment that Hoyte van Hoytema’s cinematography wasn’t one of them. “So what’s gonna win next year?” Nolan asked me half-jokingly. He predicted Black Panther will be among the Best Picture nominees in 2019, which would make it the first comic-book movie to break that ceiling with the Academy. I reminded him that it was because of The Dark Knight’s exclusion that the Academy went to 10 (and now up to 10) nominees to get movies like that included, but to no avail so far. A top Disney exec told me flat out that they would be campaigning not only Black Panther for the big prize but also the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns (from director Rob Marshall), which he was raving about, particularly for star Emily Blunt.

No matter how evenly two people are matched physically...when one person enters a fight with the intention to get the opponent to yield....and the other enters with the sole idea of killing the other one....it creates an imbalance.

Absolutely. Never hold back in such a fight

I'm having a hard time believing The Force Awaken is number one. It was a terrible movie and nobody is talking about it. I call BS on that. Disney is fudging numbers or something. Paramount was well known for fudging numbers for the Transformers flicks by having mysterious money being counted in Puerto Rico.

Yeah I thought the same thing when I watched it. T'Challa could have defeated Killmonger very early if he was going for the kill. He was trying to be merciful instead and it backfired. Big time.

You're a funny guy.

It's not the first time T'Challa has shown mercy either; in the first Warrior's Fall challenge he could have killed M'Baku, but instead of ending his life T'Challa persuaded M'Baku to yield for the sake of his people, and later on he earned M'Baku's alliance. Personally, I think T'Challa is a strong leader not because he kills as he pleases, but by showing mercy he proves himself to be a leader, because it takes a lot more to spare the life of his enemies than to kill them.

I'd agree with that. I only know BP really from reading Avengers comics but I have been very happy with Boseman's portrayal of him in these films. Very noble.

Well TFA wasnt exactly ground breaking stuff man.

It made money off of the franchise's lore more then it was off of how good of a movie it was.

Well whether or not it had legs because of good word of mouth is debatable, but people are still talking about it and will be for a long time. It hasn't been forgotten by a long shot. It's the biggest film of the decade....for now.

It was better than that mess they released in December....smh

Exactly.

So few are willing to admit this. Same as Jurassic World.

I want to see it.

Yeah. Disney paid me and all those people who were lined up down the block in front of the Chinese IMAX Theater in Hollywood at 5am in the morning on opening day.

In addition, they bought me breakfast at the Loews Hotel restaurant (By the way Bob, I never thanked you for the Mimosas and Bloody Marys, free parking, and that cool metal popcorn container that I sealed and turned into an ice bucket.).

But, Bob, PLEASE stop messing with those Puerto Rico numbers in order to bloat your box office. For crying out loud, you're the president of Disney; not the United States. We expect a little more from you.

Sorry....my bad.....but I didn't bring it up.....

EDIT: Did I mention Bob paid me to go to BP at the Cinemark?? And I don't live in Puerto Rico either.

TFA had a monster run at the domestic box office. I find it hard to believe you don't know that from the amazement it caused at BOF. It earned almost $1 billion in North America due to the fan frenzy it engendered. It's not possible for any studio to "fudge" box office numbers because the final earnings are reported by the exhibitors.

Even though TFA left me extremely unimpressed with its derivative plot and conscious imitation of Episode IV, it's impossible to deny how popular it was. What can I say? People have different tastes.

ETA: Whoops! I just read C. Lee's admonishment. Sorry about adding to the derailment. :csad:

Christopher Nolan believes Black Panther has a chance of getting nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars next year!

As much as it would be great if this happened, it doesn't seem likely! It does have a chance in categories such as Production Design and Costume, Hairstyling and Makeup.

The Academy frowns on "super hero movies". Even though I think it was good enough to get AT LEAST a nomination, I'd be shocked if it actually happened. The Oscar's seem to prefer "weird, artsy" movies over profitable big budget movies....and this isn't even taking into account the "minority" aspect.

You could make the argument that that's why he was seemingly a "better" fighter in Civil War. T'Challa was out for the kill in CW.

The tastes of Academy voters have grown ever more baroque and peculiar as the members have aged. The more niche and unappealing movie is to tbe GA, the likelier it is to find favor on the awards circuit. Hollywood takes pride in nominating films that aren't popular, as if that proves them better than average folks. There.s a reason why the next crop of Oscar nominees can be predicted by the press at the start of every year. The "Oscar Bait"formula is very well known.by all the Indies and specialty producers.
