You've seen it? Thoughts?

My favorite MCU movie hands down. Can't objectively say if it's the best, but it's the most thought out, profound and resonant of any of the MCU flicks. This is to me the very first MCU film where I see a real director at play with a vision who knows how to tell a story without visual effects (even though they are aplenty). The camera work is outstanding, there's intent, real thought put in the shots and the editing and in the overall story. The movie breathes and it's such a rare thing in that series of movies. The world building is far superior than anything they ever done before. The emotion is there, it rings true and it's powerful. The humour is not distracting at all and works soooo well (even with an "internet meme" reference that usually annoys me in real life, but works here given the context). I personally didn't find any flaw that distracted me from my enjoyment of the film. Not saying that they aren't any or won't be for some, but I was captivated by the film from beginning to end.

To me that's a 10/10, an instant classic in the genre. The movie forced me to drop my objectivity and go along for the ride. I just fell in love with the movie. It's truly unique and special.

EDIT: Ok there was maybe ONE moment in the climax that challenged my suspension of disbelief a little bit when it happened, but then I was right back on track and along for the ride.

Would you say it's the TDK of Marvel?

Where would you rank Killmonger?

He's a GREAT character, relatable and everything... BUT... I have a bias for real comic book villain that scream comic book villain. Like I'm a big defender of Ronan (I LOVED the performance and the over the top-ness), and thought the Vulture was a good character but a meh villain. So in the case of Killmonger, he's a fleshed-out character first and a vilain second. As a character he's the best villain in MCU. But I got more kicks out of Hela last year.

Definitely Marvel's TDK by Marvel's standards in my opinion. But TDK was more epic in its filmmaking and more memorable/iconic overall.

Do you think the fact Ryan Coogler was still working under the Marvel house is what kept it from being that level (not saying better, but of that level)?

Reliant on CGI/VXF, not filming on real locations, having to usher in comedy, shorter run time, etc etc.

Thanks for your breakdown.

I hate to do this but i have to. Ive seen alot of comments saying its a drama first and the action comes second. Would you say there is a lack of action in this movie?

Thanks again.

I wonder if Ava DuVerney regrets passing on this. Her reason was she “wanted to make an Ava DuVerney” movie but honestly Wrinkle in Time doesn’t look half as good as this. I’m sure she’s happy for the cast and crew and Coogler, but clearly Marvel gave him a lot of freedom.

No no, the movie is full on Coogler. I just think Coogler and Nolan are not on the same caliber as filmmakers, even if we're dealing with two great ones.

There's enough action. No jawdropping set piece but it's fine. The movie has much more to offer. I think just focusing on the action set-pieces is missing the point of the movie.

She was clearly the wrong fit. Personally I didn't like her directing skills in Selma and A Wrinkle In Time looks really unimpressive and laughable at point.

I think Eren is a big DC fan and gave it a 9.5 rating.

Thats true and fair.

He's still just 31 so he's got time grow and get better hopefully. :woot:

If Coogler leaves I hope she gets her shot at the sequel.

I think what Marvel was selling her wasn't what she wanted to hear. However, I think Feige opened up his mind a bit/gave more leeway with Coogler since he really loves his films.

I REEEEALLY hope not. And frankly Coogler has no reason to walk away from this.

He said his only issue was pacing in certain places. He said he could tell it either should have been shorter or they should have fleshed it out more to make it longer.

I hope they release an extended cut one day.

Depends on Coogler's interests.

Unless A Wrinkle In Time is a disaster I think she can learn from that and then be prepared for BP 2.

Pathetic.

Coogler can come for a sequel, take a rest and do other things for a few years and then come back for a third film.

I am all those 1's are by people who usually like to complain why critics aren't objective about a DC film.

Nice, IMDB.com just revamped their user reviews. So now people can't sabotage the movie ratings like before.

IMDb | Help [/INDENT]Black Panther (2018) - User ratings - IMDb

Too late.

As of right now, 1272 users have already gave it a "1", 3,923 gave it a "10", it has an average of 6.9 right now.

It's a useless feature. The only audience rating I pay any sort of attention to nowadays is "CinemaScore"...all the others are way to easy to corrupt simply by the way they have it designed.

Reminds me of when Nolan and some DC fans where down-voting the Godfather and up-voting the Dark Knight to take its place.

Sad indeed.

I think the IMDb score will go up when the movie will be released and people get to see it. Even though the "this movie is overrated/overhype" crowd will be inevitable.

Christopher Nolan is 16 years older then Ryan Coogler. Ryan Coogler is just as good as him, if not better.

I stressed that these were two great directors in their respective fields and it's not about which one is better than the other. But judging by their respective body of work Nolan showcases a more ambitious and visceral sense of the scale and scope in his films, both in concept and execution. Like subjectively I didn't like Interstellar, but the insane ambition and craft put into the movie is objectively undeniable.

And yes, he's also older, therefore more experienced... Which goes back to my point. Not the same caliber.

But I was comparing two films I have seen which are Black Panther and TDK. I like Black Panther better, but I'd argue that TDK is a more significant cinematic achievement overall, from a filmmaking standpoint.

You guys should probably just avoid IMDB ratings and such unless you just wanna be angry. Focus on RT, Metacritic the films Boxoffice because those are probably what matters.

The movie is getting rave reviews and last I heard was tracking at around 150 million. Power of Positivity until next Friday.
