Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

Agreed. And personally I’m fine with that. I think a character like Batman needs one vision/direction, and that includes where said character’s supporting cast is concerned in regards to spin off movies.
Bring in Batgirl and put BOP on HBO max. Bring Ivy in for Harley Quinn but you need Joker to be in it too. Mad Love needs to happen. Margot had that as one of her choices but for some reason chose BOP.

For some reason I thought this movie was coming out next week

I think we’re all agreed the marketing campaign blew it. But also, maybe if we’re all being honest, a Harley Quinn movie just wasnt what people wanted right now. Maybe SS hurt it? Maybe people were like “yikes i dont want more of that.”

But.

Then again. Aquaman. A movie that came a year after Justice League s*** the bed and apparently was exactly what the doctor ordered for much of the GA. So I dont know anymore lol

I don't see any evidence that Harley Quinn would be to blame if this movie underperforms.

Again, as you and I have said, it was the marketing. A Harley Quinn movie could work now or whenever. AS you point out, Aquaman was introduced in the trainwreck called JL and his solo movie went on to be one of the highest grossing DC movies. So I don't think it was SS either.

I just really think
1) The full marketing push started way too late
2) The actual marketing (even the title of the movie) wasn't good

Agreed. I feel like the title was Margot’s idea. And while i give props to her for trying something quirky....they should have just called it HARLEY QUINN AND THE BIRDS OF PREY. Or maybe DC PRESENTS: HARLEY QUINN. Marketing 101 is your title has an enormous impact of getting people interested in your product (look at John Carter for example).

The HQ cartoon was better received.

The HQ cartoon was better received.

Not really, its pretty much on the same level.
When it was annouced, when trailers came...people were going the same as with BOP "This looks dumb, nobody likes harley quinn, shouldnt do that show" and so on and so on.

Whats the end of the song? People love the show.
And while people dont "love" BOP, i havent really seen many people dislike the movie too much.
Same as with the cartoon, people mostly seem positivly suprised about the movie.

Should have called it Harley Quinn's Fabulous Adventure. I am willing to bet there is a pretty big segment of the general population who knows who Harley is and is not even aware that there is a Harley film out

I also think that the weekend before Valentine's weekend was a poor choice. A lot of couples are probably planning to see a movie that weekend, and amazingly, not everyone goes to a movie every weekend. I do hope it picks up some legs with good WOM.

Could be.
I dont know, at this point this is all very confusing to me.

Ever since Wonder Woman i havent seen this many people go "I cant wait to watch the movie" "I enjoyed the movie" "will go a X number of times in the movie"...and that without going too deep into the DC fandom...people i know dont care about comics saying they will watch the movie.

So i dont get how the box office starts this low when left and right without me even activly having to look, seemingly so many plan or have watched the movie.

I assume this is a movie that will make its money slow but steady with a weaker than expected opening.
But i dont know, it would be shame if a movie that is seemingly so well recieved, burns because of marketing problems.

I don't buy the release date is bad argument.

1) This isn't really a "Date" movie is it? Like it's not like many couples plans are "Let's go see Birds of Prey" on Valentine's Day. At least I don't think so
2) BoP has very little marketing
3) We've seen a good amount of movies have a fair bit of success around this time.
4) There's not a major event that will prevent most people from going to the theater. And since people claim this was targeted toward teens and there isn't even a SAT/PSAT day this weekend

Release date was fine

wb needs to reevaluate its marketing team shazam and bop both had mediocre marketing with so so trailers

meanwhile joker had amazing marketing, great trailers and made it feel like a film you needed to see
Yeah, the trailers for both films undersold the full package you get when you watch the film. The Shazam trailer showed the comedy side well but not the mystical/horror stuff. The BoP trailer was outright bad.

My prediction is that the film will end up somewhere around 220-240 million. Either
A) Barely losing money.
B) Barely breaking even.
C) Barely making a profit.

Not good in any of those scenarios but not as catastrophic as it could be. I do think WB should stop gambling on things that underperform.

I don't see how trailers could be made any different from what they were without giving away too much, the movie's runtime isn't long, they have little choice in regards to what they can show in the trailers.

I think people were not interested in watching this based on the premise alone, nothing you can do about that, maybe had DC brand been as strong as Marvel is now, things would have been different.

DC is still seen as a brand that makes lot of bad movies than good ones, a perception that is maintained and perpetuated by media outlets and vociferous critics of it.

FYI: There's a new trend called Galentines where women celebrate their female friendships. There was an ACT exam this Saturday.

Here's an idea: Make a Harley Quinn movie that actually looks a ****ing Harley Quinn movie. It's not hard, they've got the right talent in the role and plenty of material to pull from.

None of those would prevent a movie from making money and neither are major events. And isn't Galentine's Day on the 13th anyway?

EDIT: Yeah it is on the 13th.

One of the problems is they made a movie set in Gotham but couldn't use Batman or Joker. That's a bad position.

From my estimation, it's another case of making a movie no one really asked for. OWs come down to 2 major components, making a film people want and marketing. It looks like critical reviews and word of mouth will have to carry this as far as it can.

Usually, for most DC movies, US collections and International Box office collections are 50:50.

But, since Shazam !, US market has been slacking. People in US are not getting excited for DC movies (Joker being the exception)

You have to thank WB Execs and Matt Reeves (who is creating a separate bat-universe) for that. I doubt we will see Batman, Catwoman, Riddler, Penguin and Gordon in DCEU.

Possibly. OTOH next weekend is a double holiday weekend, with Vday Friday and President’s Day Monday, both of which will boost box office numbers. Given how OW turned out, I think they get more out of opening now versus next weekend and no holiday to follow.
