Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

Those numbers are almost outside the realm of possibility at this point.

This is tracking under Shazam, so at this point $300M worldwide would be a victory, unless it breaks out.

Yeah I just saw this on BOT and it's definitely disappointing to hear on top of the not so great domestic numbers so far. Hopefully, it does end up having good legs.

There's no way they could've known. I'm pretty sure they were looking at Deadpool's numbers which is why they chose the Feb date. Outside of Disney, every release from other studios will be gambles.
I'd say they should've known because Harley Quinn was EXTREMELY popular among teenagers during the Suicide Squad days.

Yeah but those same teens should be at least 17 by now considering it came out nearly 4 years ago. At the end of the day, all I really want is for WB not to overreact and start screwing up future movies and plans because of this like they've done in the past. Even though they've gotten better, you never know what WB is thinking at any moment.

And maybe they're over Harley by now, so you'd have to get a new set of teenagers. I notice girls especially "get over" stuff they were really into when they were 14-16.
Point is, if your character really appealed to teenagers... you should keep making sure to appeal to teenagers and sell the product to teenagers.

This movie went through significant reshoots with a new director brought in.

The only reshoots were action and giving Ewan a practical mask. This is according to ViewerAnon who leaked the whole plot last year, which is nearly identical to what we got. Also the reshoots were only summed up to 1M according to Deadline

it is what it is i guess.
sometimes there's nothing you can do about it.

I still don't really understand how the rating is more to blame here than the marketing. Yeah they probably alienated a good portion of the younger female fans, but that audience usually finds a way to see R-rated movies anyways besides the R-rating didn't seem to hurt Joker, Logan or any of the Deadpool movies much at all, although maybe those movies being more male skewing helped them immensely. If we go by the early indicators though this movie audience from last night was heavily male which is definitely a problem considering women were supposed to turn out in droves for it. Again I think this is why the marketing didn't quite do its job as far as appealing to women who weren't already big HQ fans unlike SS which had so much going for it with Will Smith and Joker being in it.

Again, every single review I've seen says the movie was exactly what it was marketed as, tone, characterization, and everything.

Like Joker, i'm wondering if WB put up only half of the budget into this film to cover themselves

Because this movie stems from a PG 13 movie that really appealed to teenagers.
Joker was largely a PG13 character. I think every appearance by him was in a PG13 movie. Made a billion. Jackman Wolverine appealed to kids even still made a decent chunk of change in his R rated outing.

Besides, teenagers see R rated movies too.

I don't think an R rating would hurt this. I don't know how it will perform overall, but I don't think anyone should blame the rating.

Joker is different though. TDK was a very mature film, and Joker also looked like a very mature film.
And while teenagers can sneak in to R rated movies, it's still logical to assume it somewhat affects its potential.

And I don't think the rating alone is the problem, the garbage aesthetic also is.

Joker and Logan weren't marketed towards teenagers like this was. They didn't have trailers and tv spots with pop music with censored words like "freaking". They also didn't partner up with Hot Topic whose main demo is teenagers

Not to mention they didn't make a deal with something like ****ing Fortnite lmao.

I don't think the majority of the marketing was aimed at just teenagers though. At least from what I saw. I'll give you the Hot Topic collection.
But other than that it seemed to be a pretty wide ranging campaign

All the more reason the marketing wasn't the problem, the movie and its aesthetic and such is. You were not going to be able to sell this to adults in an extremely succesful way with that aesthetic and this concept.

I've seen from a number of people that it looked too much like Suicide Squad so they probably thought the quality would be the same. Kinda like how BvS pretty much killed JL's BO regardless if WB messed with the movie or not.

Suicide Squad was well received by the general audience tho... /mostly because of teenagers/.
That movie definitely made bank and it had good legs.

But that doesn't necessarily have to do with the R rating tho.
If it kept the same aesthetic that, maybe, people didn't like; they still aren't going see it no matter the rating
If people don't like the aesthetic that was presented in the images and trailers, then the rating isn't going to matter.
And again, teenagers see R rated movies too.
Actually if this movie's marketing really is that focused on the teenagers, then we should disregard the Thursday preview numbers because maybe the younger teens 13-16 couldn't go out to see it on a school night because their parents, guardians, older siblings or whoever couldn't take them to see it yet. It's still pretty early.

Maybe she was out of the spotlight for too long.
I think now more than ever if your character isn't going to appear a lot over the years, you need to rush out sequels ASAP. 3 year gap between appearances max. Otherwise I feel like you lose your momentum. I think the same thing happened with the new ST movie series.
At a certain point you might as well just wait and do one of those long awaited sequels like 10 years later

As horrible as Suicide Squad was even its aesthetics were better. Letoker aside the characters looked good. Croc, Boomerang and Deadshot were perfect. I have only seen one shot of Black Mask with his mask in BOP's marketing campaign. Otherwise he looks like a typical *****ebag. I'm stunned that they reshot the film in order to give him his mask...wtf?

I also think WB/DC have severely overestimated Harley. The novelty is gone and they dont have Joker and Will Smith to bank on this time. They're about to learn that Harley aint that 4th pillar they tout her to be.

He had a mask already, they just changed it. It originally looked like an all black version of this

It was suppose to be an art piece
