Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

Fading fast domestically tho...

‘Birds Of Prey’ Flying Low With $33.5M Opening Weekend – Deadline

2nd Update, Midday: It’s not looking so spectacular for Warner Bros.’ Harley Quinn movie Birds of Prey which is seeing a Friday of $12.6M, and opening weekend around $33.5M. Finance sources prefer to wait until overseas figures come in to determine whether this net $84.5M production is in the black (some argue with me that it’s much more). At $33.5M, Birds of Prey is under tracking’s $50M-$55M projection and under what Warners was hoping for, which was $45M.

How will this new regime respond?

The old regime responded by taking a bad situation (BvS) and making it worse (SS)

Suicide Squad was, for all intents and purposes, a hit. Not critically, but it performed really really well at the box office.

This is just a disaster. Save for some miracle, it'll break even and barely make a profit.

Not too optimistic about more BoP spin-offs. If they do the directors will have less freedom... which may actually be a good thing, as long as they don't go the JL route.

Well, WW is on track. The Batman is safe. They may put a closer eye on SS but I don't think Gunn will have any issues.

Sirens if that was ever going to be done is probably off the books. And not sure about Batgirl now.

Wow thats depressing box office news. The marketing people screwed the pooch with this one big time. I dont care what anyone says those trailers did not sell the movie.

oh well this aint the end of Harley regardless, we’ll see her next year. Huntress, Black Canary and Cassandra Cain however...

I don't think this is the end of Batgirl at all.

Edit: Or at least BoP underperforming doesn't mean the end of Batgirl

I can only speak for myself - but the TV spots felt soul-less and annoyed the crap out of me. I'm talking instant channel changers. I already found the HQ character hella annoying to begin with, so it was ramped up a few more notches. Can't forget trying too hard to let everyone know she's in the movie with her own title sequence.

not only that, the actual “Birds of Prey” had no personality in those trailers. I get it, Harley’s the star, but if your gonna call it BoP then why dont you show who these women are instead using them as background dressing. The trailers were probably the worst DC films trailer ive seen in some time.

Ya the rest of the BoP squad was entirely forgettable in those promos. They felt like random cardboard cutouts - similar to some of the extra mutants in the X-Men movies.

The trailers didn't excite me. I didn't really have an ounce of excitment for BoP until the last trailer, really. Glad the people who saw it liked it. I hope to catch it in theaters while it's still in.

I just want to know how this film even got past the initial pitch meeting. Not to **** on Margot too much, but she kinda deserves some of the blame for what’s happened here too. This really was a vanity project for her, and she was given extraordinary leeway as to who was brought into help create the movie. It appears at no point did she actually consider who the film was meant to be for, other than maybe herself. If you wanna make movies for yourself, fine, but you can’t expect it to appeal to others in that case. But what’s most obvious in all this is that Harley is just not as popular as WB thought she was. The truth they are learning now is that she’s a supporting character, she works best as either part of team or as a duo or sidekick, and best used in small doses. Any more than that and she starts to become irritating. Best version of her is still the Batman Animated Series IMO.

Agreed. Now, if Batgirl was in this I could see people saying that but she's protected by not appearing here. Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel also help Batgirl in my opinion.

That's usually the mindset of creative people though . They make movies they want to see. It's the studio's job to decide if these movies are viable . I mean Star Wars is just Lucas jerking off to old movie serials from his youth but people ended up loving that. He made Star Wars for himself. Even Lucas will say that.

True. What’s baffling is why Margot was given so much leeway in the first place though. I have to imagine at some point someone looked at the dailies and said to themselves ‘she’s gone too far’.
