Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

Wow this thread has a bunch of overreactions.

Walter Hamada is fine. This movie had a $90M budget. It will make it back. Even if it doesn’t in theatres, it will in ancillary markets. And they’ll make a tonne off of merchandising because it’s Harley.

DC is fine. The Batman is fine. Wonder Woman is fine. The Suicide Squad will be looked at but will ultimately be fine.

Everything is fine. Just don’t expect Birds of Prey 2 unless this legs it a bit. I wouldn’t even count out Gotham City Sirens at this point. WB makes a lot of money from Harley merchandise.

The fact it exists and in the quantity it doesn’t says it all.

No one dresses up as Shazam for Halloween. No one buys Shazam merchandise. They don’t even really make it.

They make tonnes of Harley merchandise because tonnes of people buy it.
Toy companies do take into account the popularity of the character before deciding on making huge quantities of that (market research), in past that have been burned by making action figures of characters that won't sell, so nowadays they simply avoid making toys that would just sit on shelves.

The very fact that many Toy companies are making Harley Quinn and BoP merchandise is an indicator of popularity of that character.

Yikes.

WB better avoid this scared marketing for WW84. Shazam's BO is low because it got squashed between CM and AE, but a big part of that is due again to the marketing. Joker was expected to earn low, but had a wholly different media narrative, hence why it blew to a billion. We should hopefully get a trailer next month or WW84, because if the marketing fails again like with BoP, then heads are gonna roll.

I dont care about Harley and I agree. Bane, Ivy and King Shark are literally the best things in her cartoon lol. The character is undoubtedly very popular but she's not Deadpool. Deadpool has legit skills and visuals that help sell an action flick, the comedy is a bonus. Harley is a crazy girl with a bat. She's no power fantasy and DC can pretend as they have recently that she's very intelligent and empowered but its all a sham. This is a character who was duped in to existing because of Joker. There's no changing that.
The action can be well shot but no one fantasizes about smashing people with bats while being dressed like she is. That's just the simple truth. Her go to story seems to be moving on from Joker and now they've used that too. That's why it was important for Huntress and Canary to look the part. Would it have killed them to give Canary a leather jacket and some biker gear?
C'mon. The HQ tv show has excellent supporting characters, but HQ herself is still the best part of it.

Let us just agree to disagree. My top 5 favorites are Bane, Ivy, Shark, Frank, Damian Wayne. Most characters are enjoyable including Harley but I dont think she carries a scene like they can.

I think I saw about 40 people dressed as Harley Quinn last time I went to a comic event. She’s definitely one of the most popular female comic characters.

OW 32-34
DOM under 95
OS 80-100

WW total looks under 200.

That’s not how it works though. If a movie makes $300M, the Studio doesn’t get 100% of that.

Appreciate that, given I’ve put ‘extra’ on top that, agreed, factor in shared costs.

I really hope it gets over $400 million. I dont care about Harley but I dont want this to bomb.

That's surprisingly Low Cinemascore.

It’s the type of score that’s hard to predict audience response lol, its the same as JL, SS and Joker but those 3 have good to insane legs, but with the reviews and early Rt score you’d expect it to be in the As

Had a quick look at the bot forum for international so it’s something like 35M OS so something like 70M WW, will rely on the second holiday weekend to give it a boost, will struggle to get 200M.

They will probably have to rethink the plan going forward, maybe GCS with a big name for Ivy (Ana post 007?) and try to get Zoe as Catwoman, have the Batgirl solo, and finish with GCS vs BOP including Batgirl.

I think Batgirl and Catwoman are the ones that will draw the mainstream, they definitely need to get Reeves’ Batman cast or Bruce himself for some cameos or support to bump the financial side of things to make it sustainable long term.

Some saying MEW and J for the HbOMax series now, that’s possible if they get anything at all, because their solos or even team up films are not happening, unless they have a popular Batgirl there, Oracle’s probably not enough, or if you get Emma Stone as the older Oracle, that might have some publicity.

Black Canary might have a better chance if paired with Arrow, since he’s got his own tv show so there is some awareness there, but the hardcore feminists will start hacking this, like the hardcore anti-feminists did for BOP, but mainstream still holds the key so...that’s one way to go, maybe if they can achieve other films with good profits first.

HQ/BoP might just get a sequel/spin off thanks to Margot, like Tomb Raider with Alicia, but pressure will be on to actually profit off the bat

If they done an accurate version of this group and not ****ed it up with awful characterisation and costumes then you’d be looking at more ker-ching, and not missed out one of the integral characters but heh it’s WB and they don’t know what the **** they are doing.

Interesting how teens gave it 94% but only made up 7% of the population, and male/female split is totally a normal superhero 6/4 split. But that’s early numbers, will see what happens. So some posters are right R rating probably helped dragged this down to an uncomfortable financial level, if it was pg13 my wife and daughter would have joined me today, that’s x 3, and other teens.

Just funny how looks like I am one of the men turning up for this in the OW but I get called aggressive and drunk for trying to be positive lol, when the girls aren’t turning up, not giving it a Wonder Woman like ratio, they did the same no show with Charlie’s angels, how can you blame men when female payers continue to show up for films like Joker and Avengers instead of these and Ghostbusters and Ocean 8 (which did fine but it’s no Logan or even Shazam numbers).

This franchise might end up getting saved by men buying BoP and HQ toys lol.

My boss who will surely turn up for black Adam said bop looked too girly for him, I told him it’s done by team John wick so he might, might check it out, while my other female colleague is aware of the film but didn’t know it’s out now, but she doesn’t sound like a regular moviegoer? My other girl colleague just dislikes Margot’s Harley from SS lol.

I'm sure those (men and women alike) who are not showing up for this movie as they think it's "too girly" (it's not) will definitely show up for Black Widow.

Lets all not dance around it, people never wanted to give the movie a chance...simple as that.
From the moment it was annouced, people were hellbent on ripping into it.

Be it for comic accuracy that otherwise doesnt matter much, to the trailers being a problem for not showing enough(which normally seems to be a problem, looking at the reaction to the WW84 trailer in terms of "oh i already can tell the whole plot thanks to the first trailer"), to the fact that it dares more which is now a problem when before people were complaining about how that should be the way.

People were falling over their feet to drown out all criticism about the joker movie, that comic book movies shouldnt be 100% accurate, should try different things and so on.

But here suddenly 100% comic accuracy is a must, otherwise its ****?

People were from day one against the movie for the sake of it, without willing to give it even a tiny chance.
So far most reviews tell you that clearly, that those who gave it a chance...were positivly surprised by how well they nailed the characters and all.

What awful characterization ? Harley and Black Mask are developed enough and Black Canary, Huntress are given decent intro.

I agree about costumes but missing out the character of Cassandra Cain is not a big thing for general audience as she is an obscure comic book character that no one in general audience cares about.

Don’t think you can compare this to Black Widow. This movie’s action scenes pale in comparison.

tbf, people never wanted to give Joker a chance but the first trailer won them over.
BOP trailers couldn't. simple as that.

CBMs dont have to be comic accurate but this one (just like Shazam) lacked any hook, any must-see factor. Squad had Batman, Joker and Will Smith, it looked like an action-packed big-budget movie. BoP has nothing characters, meh trailers, no adventure... It should have been a 40-60M movie just like first two John Wicks. Instead WB spent almost 100M without marketing / distribution. And I doubt Batgirl would change anything. People love Batman, using his female version would make it look even more desperately woke.

I plan on seeing the movie today, but I just knew the marketing would let this one down.

- The title.
- The bland trailers.
- The gaudy posters.

I hope I like the film and based on the feedback so far, I think I will, but a few missteps were definitely made here.

We could have had a great Thelma & Louise-esque film with Harley and Ivy, instead they went for Harley and the D-listers.
