Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

We have seen those accusations levelled at films before and yet those films have still gone on to be successful at the box office.
MCU movies have a fan following and a trust which makes them immune to such weak accusations against the movie.

If people think a movie is good and they will be entertained then they usually turn up.
What makes people think the movie is bad (RT score, wom, Cinemascore ?) What makes them feel that they won't be entertained ?

I have no idea why people aren't showing up in biggest numbers to see the film but clearly something in the marketing/promotion of the film didn't sell them that this would be entertaining enough for some people.

The aesthetic is definitely a huge turn off for me. I hate the Schumacher films with a passion and this reminds me of those.

The costumes are trash too. It's not about being sexy. Its about conveying what the character is. Black Canary has a biker theme, Harley has a clown theme, Huntress has a female Batman theme. I do not see those themes reflected in those attires. Cassandra Cain was a legit Batgirl but here she's...something lol.

the sad thing is, this shouldn’t be compared to the garbage look of Schumacher. It’s nothing like that. The characters are all pretty nicely handled. Cassandra being the only one they was changed a lot. I think it’s worth seeing. It feels like an episode of the Batman animated series and it’s fun ride!

its 100% on the marketing the trailers just like the shazam trailers weren't terribly exciting

This movie deserves these terrible numbers. Batman and Robin was better than this mediocrity. Not a single great DCEU film since BvS. What a disaster.

It's really interesting because similar to Shazam, critics seem to be enjoying this but it seems like audiences aren't going to see it or don't like it.

Again, I think both come down the the marketing
I think Shazam and Birds trailers lacked something different and exciting. If Shazam was a Xmas action comedy and premiered on December 21 it could have been much, much bigger. Just like Birds: if the story was Batman's forced to work with Harley vs Birds vs Black Mask then it's a huge movie.

But it's interesting in my country Shazam and Birds have very meh reactions for a cbm from both critics and audience so for me it's hard to understand why it's got over 80% on RT.

I also think that CBMs have reached a plateau. One big blockbuster/cbm at the least is going to flop no matter what imo. I liked Shazam a lot and I was stunned to see its numbers.

At the end of the day WB is going to have to be careful about the rating, target audience, release date and marketing in the future. I just saw that next year they have Matrix, Batman, Black Adam, Suicide Squad, Fantastic Beasts and Sherlock Holmes. Then there's Avatar and 4 MCU films, John Wick, the next MI and more. There's just no way all of them will succeed.

Honestly of them all its the WB films that seem most in danger. I think Matrix and Batman will make bank but numbers associated with the other franchises aren't exactly stellar. Even Batman might feel the blow of Snyder's trainwreck.

They can't just assume everything is gonna be a Joker level success. You need to put good people behind the costumes and the camera.

Wow.
To be honest, even with my skepticism, a month ago I'd have told you it'd have made 400-500 million in the end.
And even yesterday I'd have told you at least 325 million - 350 milllion.
The fact that there's a legitimate possibility that it'll barely reach 200 million now it's just depressing.

This is the new regime's first true test tho. Their reaction will be interesting to follow

Hopefully they don't go into full sabotage mode like the last one *shudders*

It's really not that hard, but I suspect they didn't go with comic accuracy because, let's be honest. the BoP costumes are pretty much just fanservice in the books.

Costuming was also a problem with Shazam. The film was terrific, but Levi's ridiculous muscle suit was a big turnoff for me.
Yeah, I got several relatives asking if Shazam was a spoof/parody.

That's why I'm saying these newcomer directors shouldn't be given that much free reign, let them craft the stories and their movies, but help them with things like costumes, aesthetic and making sure they are appealing to the demographic that the movie is gonna attract.

If it doesn't have significantly good legs next week... would it be fair to call it a flop? Or is it gonna flop even if it has good legs?

The costumes in this were fine. Harley looked amazing the entire film as did Black Canary.

Yes, the final looks for the BOP were a tad meh but they were for one scene.. They weren’t going to spend a crazy amount of time or money on them.

There was not even one decent funny dialogue in the trailer- contrast that with the " we' re bad guys, it's what we do" line that people really liked in the SS trailer. And a major problem in the trailer was Harley herself, she came across as annoying instead of delightfully nuts. We should have seen this coming from the title of the film itself- the marketing was going to outsmart itself

The budget is reportedly under $100M. Will probably still lose money but won’t be as bad as something like Dolittle.

Age of Ultron gave Wanda a costume she only wore one time for a matter of seconds that was better than anything I saw Harley, Canary, or Huntress wear in the marketing.

I don't think Gotham City Sirens is happening because:
A) With these numbers there's zero way in hell they force Matt Reeves to connect the worlds to put Kravitz Selina there.
B) With these numbers there's zero way in hell they allow Margot to cast her own Selina.
C) With these numbers there's zero way in hell they'll greenlit another girl gang movie.

And if I had to guess, the access to Ivy is gonna go to Matt Reeves for his Batman trilogy if he wants to use her at some point. So no Harley + Ivy as well.
