Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

I believe WB did this before with Edge Of Tomorrow which was called Live. Die. Repeat. But I think that was right before the movie released.

Edit:

Someone from Atom Tickets

It reminds me of what happened with Ghostbusters, as a subtitle started appearing.

If this movie was a harder R they could have seriously taken some notes from Deadpool's marketing campaign and really hyped up the R-rated aspects. The trailers didn't really push that stuff enough at all outside of a few curse words and HQ breaking that one guys legs. As it stands with the movie itself while I did appreciate the R-rating for the most part it definitely could have been PG-13 had some bits been edited down.

fair enough lol. But like I said before, to some the movie was aesthetically unappealing.
I think most comic fans are going to prefer costumes although many will be happy to wait for sequels to see them. The problem is you don’t always get sequels. :csad::

to be fair they should have made an announcement to change the title, and gloat about the good reception at the same time and title change is for xyz reasons.

That's another way to market it and will get people talking about it, best if people start fighting about it again, and someone will mention it's actually pretty good RT's great as well, and they end up checking it out.

Are you reading this WB PR team?

I don’t think there should be an aim to make a film with R rating. Make the film you want and if that happens to be solid R then fine. If it’s just tiptoeing into that territory and the parts that cross the line aren’t important at all then keep it PG 13 so that younger people can get on board. In this case especially younger girls.

See I agree with that which is probably why I believe the final cut for this movie could have easily been PG-13 had they wanted it to be, but I respect Warner Bros for sticking with ultimate decision of keeping the R-rating as that's what they thought was for the best.

I’m with this guy. I dont want the DCEU to be MCU 2.0. I want each film to be its own thing with its own directorial creative vision. In a way that makes each movie kind of exciting because they dont have any rules to follow. Some fans may see that as chaotic but...this is how movies used to be made before the MCU and rewrote the rulebook. I like that you can have these quirky little offshoot movies like BoP and hey if they dont do well, they dont harm or taint what orher movies are doing. BoP’s flop has zero affect on The Batman or Wonder Woman ‘84.

In the long term, BOP won't have any long term implications for WB and DC, they'll simply be a bit more selective. WW1984 will likely be very successful this summer and TBH it's a bigger priority for Warner Bros.

I’m a bit suspicious that the R-rating was actively courted in this case as a stamp of edginess. I could be wrong of course but that’s my opinion at this stage.

I just don't think there was a lot of interest here among general audiences. Pretty much everyone I've talked to about it didn't seem too interested or seem like they *had* to see this.

What are the chances this turns around?

I’ve noticed a BIG difference on social media. Lots of click bait articles about the BO and title change, but rather than the usual troll comments about wokeness and DC sucks, the majority of comments have been from people who were surprised by the quality of the movie.

Could be a good sign for legs?

Agree. They thought it would sell the movie better but there are moments when they were afraid of actually using R-rating. Like that scene with the woman forced to dance for BM but its clear in post-production they cut/zoomed parts of some shots so the scene is less "shocking".

I don't think they zoomed in in post. And as far as the R-rating, this movie is a Tarantino/Ritchie style gangster action comedy featuring DC Comics characters so why they hell should they have made it PG-13? I would agree if this was a different take on the material, but it isn't.

They should have put out Red band trailers, though, as they did with the Deadpool movies.

It feels so much more upbeat and light than a standard Tarantino film to me, with R rated content not really dominant throughout. It's part of what I love about Harley in this. She's outright fun and her action isn't ultraviolent. I wouldn't expect/want the Joker to be like that. I would want real fear/intimidation/awe at his genius when he is onscreen along with dark comedy, but what they did worked perfectly for Harley IMO and was only a bunch of swearwords and a couple of other scenes away from being a lower rating. It's funny that TDK has a lower rating lol given how utterly drained (in a very positive way) I felt during/after that compared to the total feelgood factor of watching Harley and her egg
sandwiches going flying.
:D:

I really do think that the trailers/marketing for this film not only did not get people hyped for this film, but they actually drove a large amount of people away who otherwise might have given it a shot
I was disappointed we weren't getting the costumes but otherwise I liked the posters and was very hyped. When the trailer came out I just watched it once and thought it was pretty bad. The film gives so much more than what the trailer suggests that I think it will have had some impact on box office. :csad:

I think it will turn around to some extent. Just not sure if that will be enough to get it to breakeven. I really hope word of mouth spreads as at the moment I suspect the film is better than many people who haven't seen it expect. Fans should do what they can to get the word out.

Even though SS made a lot of money there has to be a percentage of people like me that didn't go see this based on Hating SS alone (Albeit I'm actually going to go give this a chance this week)
