Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

I don't think they zoomed in in post. And as far as the R-rating, this movie is a Tarantino/Ritchie style gangster action comedy featuring DC Comics characters so why they hell should they have made it PG-13? I would agree if this was a different take on the material, but it isn't.

They should have put out Red band trailers, though, as they did with the Deadpool movies.
Yeah, the R Rating was part of the films tone and if anything should maybe have utilized it even more. It got to be what it set out to be, it sucks that it doesn't seem to be connecting at the box office because even though I didn't love it I'd really like to see more of these characters, and ultimately that's more important to me than launching a franchise.

Probably should've just called it something like Harley Quinn (feat. Birds of Prey) to play up the music-infused aspect of this film whilst still maintaining the fun in the title all while accurately marketing it, but oh well.

It absolutely should have been called Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey or something along those lines. I don't like that Harley's the lead but the film is ultimately a Harley movie and should probably have owned that more. Doubt it would have made much of a difference, though.

I think it would have, simply because the movie title does not align with the actual story and marketing. The constant complain about the movie has been its title and it has affected the BO more than the costume design IMO.

Yeah, the idea of the costume designs being part of the damage is absurd and honestly rather out of touch.

I will slap whoever is complaining about the costume designs myself.

The reason for launching a franchise for me is usually to see more of the characters we get introduced to in an origin film, along with the potential of seeing them interact with new ones. Here we've been given an appetiser without any of the heroes fully developed outside Harley Quinn, and now with the possibility of no main course. :csad::csad:

Eh, I think we'll see the characters again. WW got introduced in a flick that underperformed. As did Flash. But the responses to those characters were favorable enough to warrant solo flicks. The other thing that BoP has going for it is that people who saw it largely liked it.

I think it'll just be a matter of packaging them up differently. A GCS vs. BoP flick maybe.

What will WB do with Harley after this?

Will they bench her like they did Green Lantern and Superman? They tend to blame the character after an underperformance/flop

The movie should have been called "Harley Quinn". And Birds of Prey should (Black Canary/the Huntress) should have been saved for an actual Bop movie. I kinda feel that even though WB was ballsy for making a Harley Quinn movie, they shoehorned Birds of Prey (well those two characters I just mentioned) to get more attention to this film but it kinda backfired because a. It was obvious that this is a Harley Quinn movie, b. the costuming sucked, c. Shoehorning bop didnt do wonders at the box office. The reviews might have been good but a lot of people are talking how this underperforms. Wb is really all over the place.

Eh, Green Lantern stuff has been in the works for several years now. And the Superman situation is a bit more nuanced than WB simply putting him in timeout. We know for fact they were trying to rebuild that character.

At any rate, Harley is in SS2. If that's successful then I wouldn't be surprised if a GCS flick were on the horizon.

A lot of us have this expectation that because it is a comic book movie, it has to make a lot of money, but you have to realize that the Walter Hamada strategy is to make these films on a low budge (in the case of BoP, $84 million) with the hopes of making a profit even though the box office is small. He did this with the Annabelle films, It, and others. This film so far should make its budget back in about the fourth week in release. I may not be the billion dollar hit that we expected to see, but my bet is that we probably will see either a sequel or spinoff film with some of the characters.

I really hope so, although I'm not sure the situation is totally comparable. For one I think WW was received much better than the BoP were, and also much better than the actuals stars of BvS, whereas the BoP were massively overshadowed by the main character in this film. Plus WW is an obvious one to get her own film while there would always be at least room for debate when it comes to a BoP solo. All that said though, I hope you are right.

Comparing Wonder Woman & the Flash to Black Canary & the Huntress is comparing apples to oranges. Also, Wonder Woman/the Flash were intended to get a solo film after bvs, as those were part of their plan. We don't know if Wb actually have plans for Black Canary/the Huntress after Birds of Prey and if they have, why would they waste BOP as a movie title in a Harley Quinn movie - thats the thing that bugs me the most with the film title. And with Joker 2, Aquaman 2, Batman and possibly WW3/The Flash coming out in the next five years, they would probably just put Black Canary/the Huntress in the backburner similar to Superman.

As for Harley Quinn, she's appearing in her 3rd movie with the same actress so I don't really care if she doesn't return after TSS.

About GCS, Catwoman is with Reeves, so Harley will be integrated to Batman IMO, albeit loosely. No way they'll cast another Catwoman just to accommodate Margot.

I'm really rooting for TSS to do well now. I didn't love the first but hopefully this one is much better with Gunn bringing something new to it, and the now massively improved Harley. Whether likely to happen or not I'm still dreaming of a GCS vs BoP with every vaguely relevant character involved.

How is it apples to oranges? And if we don't know the plan, why even mention that it? Also, I imagine a followup starring the BoP would just be called BoP2. Feels like folks are overthinking that bit.

I ain't saying the sequel is a foregone conclusion here or anything. Just saying that I don't see them putting the characters on ice because the movie didn't do well. I'd say otherwise if it critically tanked as well. But there's at least a small audience there for these characters. Wouldn't be surprised if they got a series on HBO Max.

Between BOP and GCS, I always felt GCS should have been the first film with HQ in a villain role, and now I can't see why they would push forward with any more solo HQ projects Even if SS2 does great, there will be an argument that it wasn't because of Margot's HQ, but due to other factors. The character needed better set up.

I don’t think HQ needs to be a straight up villain for GCS to work.

Not really, I don't see it anyway.

GL had a 300M budget and made 200M worldwide, that's the true definition of a flop. And it got a RT of under 30% and B cinemascore, with average/poorly received fan/GA reaction

Reynolds and Cavill are not exec producers of their characters, which cost a lot to make.

Margot's the exec producer, has a company working with WB, and she has a bunch of funko and merch to sell, and her film although started way below estimates, still has a chance to break even with all the side products, plus it's got a very good RT and viewer reactions, unlike GL and MOS.

Plus she's filming TSS, right now =P

I agree with the title but IMO Margot could have gone with Mad Love (they have the Focus directors working on it for a while) or GCS/Ivy, but she said she wanted a girl gang so she ended up going with BOP instead, so this is trying to use HQ/Margot's popularity to bring awareness to BOP not the other way around, HQ doesn't need BOP but BOP needs HQ to even have a chance for live action at the moment.

Agreed, also Margot still has a first look deal with WB as a producer so it's not like she's going anywhere soon.

Warner Bros do invest in their talent and sometimes they strike lucky as we've seen with Bradley Cooper on A Star is Born or Todd Phillips with Joker but sometimes it doesn't as we've seen with Michael B Jordan with Just Mercy and now Margot Robbie with Birds of Prey. Even Clint Eastwood isn't immune to flops but when he hits, he hits big and WB are likely hoping their relationship with Margot will bear fruits, she's working on the Barbie movie with Greta Gerwig which has a lot of potential.
