Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

Honestly i'm surprised Blair Rich didn't get fired along with Sue Kroll back in 2018 considering she was 2nd in command.

She did Joker so that was a home run, I wonder who is involved with BoP, funny no sites are doing actual home work that can generate genuine interests and clicks...

So my rough amateur calculation/guess is 43M first week and just under 20M for the weekend, 40% drop, 62M after 2 weekends, then 20M for the next full week, 15, 10, 7, 5, 3, 2, and 5M more dragged out, so that’s just under 130M, and 4/6 split overseas gives it about 325M WW, or take 90M DOM with the split it’s 225M.

I think some BOT people think under 200M but Mendelson sounds like he is looking at 200-300M+

So if you take the break even around 80x3=240M ish, it’s actually possible?

PS 4/6 split is based on 33M dom and 46M OS

Need Fox to write articles about how this is woke feminists sjw film causing girls to go crazy, that’d bump it to a billion. Lol

I have read some tweets where women -

* Had no idea that Harley Quinn was in the movie.

and /or,

* Some women were actively avoiding to watch this movie as they didn't want to see Joker in BoP, the reason - The online campaign started in favor of Todd Philips' Joker by some crazies (incels too, according to them) has discouraged them from watching this movie.

And they were not just against Leto's joker, as some fans would like to believe, but Joker character in general as Joker represents Toxic masculinity.

I doubt the offended had too strong of an impact. Disinterest is more of a killer.

I seen yesterday they are officially changing the name to try and help sales. Before even seeing the movie I said this was a horrible title (not saying it would have changed the box office much) but just always seemed like one hell of a mouthful.

No. I don't think its possible.

That's why I was never keen on that vs. idea.
I’m keen on it, just after both sets of characters have been introduced in their own films. It feels like too much to do in one film otherwise, and could seem rushed (like JL).

Joker’s huge success means that Blair Rich will be fine but also if you fire someone for making a miscall which happens a fair bit in Hollywood, there wouldn’t anyone left in the industry by the summer.

If the rest of WB’s 2020 slate is successful in one form or another then Birds of Prey will be seen as a blip.

Only problem for WB is that Joker was their last successful release. Like Deadline said, we'll see how long AT&T will tolerate these under performers and bombs before they start any drastic changes.

Also one thing that annoys me on Youtube are the videos claiming that the cast/creative team are blaming _____ when none of the cast have spoken about the movie since it's release.

There’s been plenty of ensemble movies that have worked in the past, I don’t see how this would be any different. The thing about doing separate films first is if you screw that first one up the rest don’t get made. To me, it’s hanging on for the sake of hanging on. I like the idea brought up in the previous page where the two teams after battling each other end up battling a common enemy, because it gives the villainesses the chance to escape at the end leaving the door open for sequels. And I think why this works in this particular case is that what we’re dealing with is essentially a group of secondary characters who don’t really work as solo characters.

.

Instead of looking at DC movies, as most of DC movies have performed great commercially except, of course movies like JL and now BoP.

AT&T should look why other big budget WB movies like Fantastic Beasts 2, IT Chapter 2, Detective Pikachu and Godzilla The King of Monsters are under performing.

Each of those movies has a different reason why it failed to cash in at the box office, but ultimately box office success comes down to finding an audience for the film you're making and budgeting accordingly. Then of course making sure your target audience will actually come out and watch the film. In the case of BoP, I'm starting to wonder if they even considered this.

Man, this didn't do too well in the UK... coming in second after Dolittle.
Wow... that is embarrassing. Its either because the marketing wasn't good or Harley Quinn isn't as popular as comic fans make her out to be. Perhaps the audience reception wasn't great and it wouldn't surprise me if some of the audience members told their friends/family to not bother watching this movie. I'm kinda surprised by the Box Office numbers.

TBH AT&T are focused more on HBO Max. I think WB will likely have a good summer with WW1984 and Tenet plus both In the Heights and Scoob could do well as well.

IT Chapter 2 still made a profit, Detective Pikachu fell under Legendary's perview, WB only distributed it and it was still the biggest family film WB has had since The Lego Batman Movie.

I think Dolittle being the first family film in quite some time probably helped a lot and Doctor Dolittle is more beloved in the UK compared to the US.

The marketing team needs to be fired for this. This could have very easily had Suicide Squad esque trailers that really drew people in with a rowdy, fun punk rock vibe.

I think the issue is they are bombing or underperforming a lot of the properties for the last year, it's starting to look like some way of them running the studio is wrong, WB usually has a few big hits in a year, now they're relying on one big DC property per year, otherwise they're just failing left and right in the last 12 months

Yes someone seriously dropped the ball here. And one can't help but wonder who they thought the target audience was. Because either they don't know or they don't really understand this character.

This movie is a marketing catastrophe. If it wasn’t for this site I wouldn’t even have known the movie was out for me to see it. I support all comic book movies, but this definitely wasn’t worth the price of admission in my opinion. Regardless of my opinion, this movie should be making more just due to the brand.

I don't get it. They marketed it before the big IT 2 release, and I saw trailers and spots constantly during the CW superhero lineup, including the crossover. I saw trailers every day. I still see trailers. It's got ads on Twitter nonstop, and the cast did the typical talk show appearances. I get maybe thinking the marketing could have featured different stuff to hook some people, but it definitely got good exposure. I think people just weren't interested and that the title may have caused some confusion.

Regardless of what the idiotic sphere of Twitter may lead you to think, the percentage of people that think Joker represents "toxic masculinity" is ridiculously low especially worldwide.
I'm also not sure there's a lot of people that didn't know this was a Harley movie since she was literally front and center of every single piece of marketing material, but we'll see how its legs do this weekend, that should give us an indication.
