Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

And yet, Bruce Timm really, really, really pushed the envelope.

There were some definite adult references in that series I didn't get until I was older, lol.

The thing about Harley's DCAU costume is it's tied to her toxic relationship with Joker. She has to ditch it if striking out on her own. I thought the convo with Dinah about the role of a harlequin as a servant provided more compelling context to step away from something as evocative of that role and her past with Joker. In fact, I've come to loathe that original costume and hope to never see Harley wear it again.

Yeah her iconic red and black Harleyquine costume was relevent while she was with Joker, it dosen't make any sense to wear it when she's no longer with him.

Edit:But I'm OK with some other costume with same color motif.

Domestic hold is definitely good, but remember it’s getting boosted by the holidays. Next weekend will likely drop hard. That said the big takeaway is that it’s not collapsing, which in turn suggests the problem wasn’t the movie per se, but the rating, marketing, etc. That’s positive news if you’re hoping for more Harley Quinn and/or BoP movies.

I'm hoping for a GCS film and a BOP film in earnest with Oracle. Frankly the only thing that disappointed me about this it wasn't a BOP film at all, they were merely background characters

I remember some people on twitter were saying that it would struggle to make even $135 mil /$150 mil, but it looks like it may reach close to $200 mil (even $210 mil is possible.)

While that's not enough but it's a respectable total and taken with Bluray sales+merch sales, the movie may break even financially.

Alita: Battle Angel (2019) was released on 14the Feb 2019, with a budget of $170 mil. :wow:

It made $85 mil in US, take a look at the first 14 days of the movie, will BoP follow a similar pattern ? (Alita has a drop of -38% after President's day, let's see what happens to BoP.)

Sonic and Fantasy Island have taken away many screens that were screening Birds of Prey. Sonic now has RT rating of 63% and Fantasy Island has RT rating of 9%. :wow:

That's a decent hold for Birds of Prey considering all the Monday Morning Quarterbacking that happened last weekend. It's not going to be a huge hit, but it's clearly not a total flop either. It's an under-performer really. There is a middle ground.

I maintain they should've just spent less money on this and done a Harley Quinn movie and not a Birds of Prey film and keep the R-rating. Marketing it as Birds of Prey with that stupid long goofy title instead of just Harley Quinn was dumb.

Also, DC has a history bad titles for their DC films. Case in point, Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice. Garbage title. It should've just been Batman vs. Superman. Or call it World's Finest.

Although I think a PG-13 BOP/HQ movie would have done much much better, I agree that this second weekend a good bounce back. The holds so far have been solid so far. I was afraid this could dip into the 70% territory on the 2nd weekend with Sonic, but as it turns out there was room enough for BOP.

It was a holiday weekend. It will sink like a rock from here on out.

A little early to say that. We will see what the actuals are. If it can get a little bump, that would be great.

As for future of Harley Quinn, that is sadly in Gunn's hands right now. If he doesn't screw the pooch, I can easily see them being willing to give Harley another chance.

If the choice is between the most iconic costume and one that doesn't scream Harley Quinn at all, then to use anything other than the original is foolish, as it's ended up being.

Yeah this movie is definitely closer to an underpeformer than an outright bomb which is disappointing, but it ain't exactly the end of the world either. It might drop harder next weekend, but at least it seems as if WOM is pretty positive so far which is the most important thing going forward IMO.

Warner Bros/DC could still be interested in doing something with these characters in the future whether that's on a streaming platform or some other DC movie.
