Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

Lol at the drop like a rock predictions.

John Wick 2 had similar openings and second weekend hold and ended up over 90M, so BoP should be around the same with a 40/60 dom/os split, so should be around 135M OS and 225M WW finish, or at least 200M+, which isn’t a rock like some were praying for.

This would make WB think it’s the packaging that’s the issue not the film itself, therefore continue the franchise but more control with the rating and harder reflection or hopefully a stronger marketing team in charge

Gitesh says 260 is possible but i don’t know how that’s possible, Japanese mistaking this as a spin off of Joker?

Possible? Well, sure, anything’s possible. A radioactive meteor might land in my backyard tonight and give me the power to shoot purple lightning out my butt. It’s possible. But yeah, 260? I can just barely see 240 on a good day. Maaaaybe 230-235. But I’d consider anything above 220 a victory.

Man, I would love to see your chest insignia for that.

Yeah its not likely to drop like a Rock (but post holiday drop is possible) the second week hold ensures that many more people have gone to see it for the first time, and judging from a few tweets I have read, those liked it, if they can spread good wom, the movie will do just fine as many more people will see it for the first time and some second time.

One thing that WB can still do (though it's just speculation on my part) is to wait for a few months, and if the situation in China improves, release an edited, PG-13 version of BoP in China, even if the movie makes just $40 mil over there, WB will get additional $10 mil. (25% of the China B.O.).

Also, it's worth noting that in the coming weeks no big movie is getting released, the main movie is Sonic but there's little audience overlap with BoP, the other movies like Fantasy Island may drop like a rock, given it's low RT ratings.

Only recognizable titles are The Call of the Wild and Bloodshot (release Feb 20), but I doubt they are such a big draw.

I will be the Freddy to your Shazam

Shazam:”this is so cool”

Freddy:”can I...?”

Yeah this movie is definitely closer to an underpeformer than an outright bomb which is disappointing, but it ain't exactly the end of the world either. It might drop harder next weekend, but at least it seems as if WOM is pretty positive so far which is the most important thing going forward IMO.

Warner Bros/DC could still be interested in doing something with these characters in the future whether that's on a streaming platform or some other DC movie.
It’s a problem for people who wanted a sequel with this exact cast. That’s probably not happening now.

The thing about Harley's DCAU costume is it's tied to her toxic relationship with Joker. She has to ditch it if striking out on her own. I thought the convo with Dinah about the role of a harlequin as a servant provided more compelling context to step away from something as evocative of that role and her past with Joker. In fact, I've come to loathe that original costume and hope to never see Harley wear it again.

Her costume wasn't chosen by Joker and if she has to ditch the costume to show her break up with him then what about her name? She became Harley Quinn for him. Should she go by her original name or choose a new code name? Just as she is taking back her power, she can also take back the costume as well. Though going with the first SS animated costume is the perfect way to go to keep homage but update as well.

It's one of those though, does a BOP movie without Harley Quinn really need to cost anything more than $60-50 million?

Keep it street level and low budget and the good will developed by this movie could translate to a successful follow up.

Harley Quinn herself should be fine with SS2 out next year.

The clothes make more sense as a visual statement. It's why I think they did the same thing in the DC Universe show. Plus, the original costume is just poor. It looks much more like traditional harlequin, evoking the subservience, and doesn't allow Harley to show as much emotion because of the mask over her eyes. BOP gives Harley a general look or style that's identifiable, but lets her play more with it and express herself more.

Theres no way this should have cost $100 mil to make including marketing, this should have been small scale as it gets. I cant imagine the salaries being that high ether.

I think that goes for 99% of all movies that come out every year.
Movies nowadays cost way too much to make, which means they need to earn even more to be profitable...that is insane.

Such a movie no matter what, shouldnt cost 100 Million...hell i dont think movies like batman or superman should cost this much.
100 million is a insane number.

I mean sure it could be more expensive, Hobbs and shaw cost 200 million so BOP is a bit on the lower level...but still...its insane.

I think reshoots for BoP cost $10 mil (some say $15 mil.), without reshoots, the movie might have cost around around $75 mil (my estimate)

I don't deny that but this like joker have very little special effects and practical fight scenes And mostly lower level actors aside from mcrgegor and robbie. They must have had some really nice caters

Joker cost $55M and BOP is $80M in terms of production. Judging from some of action sequences, which Joker really didn't have it's not crazy of a budget.

I saw somewhere Joker ended up been something like 65M, so take out 15M action reshoot that added value to the final product from 84M, that's about 69M, so ya they're pretty much the same budget.

Difference was Joker had the benefit of an ace marketing right from the start

Edit: and Joker doesn't have a hyena =P

Box Office: ‘Harley Quinn: Birds Of Prey’ Is Neither A Huge Hit Nor A Big Bomb

Are they seriously expecting Japan to give it 10M+? Aquaman made 15M

Scott thinks break even is budget x 2.5 = 205M

consensus from various people re final b.o. I read is around 200-260M, realistically I think 200-220M lol

JW2 made 2/3 of its money after 2 weekends, so based on that HQ might make around 215-220M including Japan, where the coronavirus is blowing up in the last week
