^ Not really. They usually want to make a profit overall and see a strong interest in dvd sales.

Box Office Mojo is the movie bible next to the IMDB. I agree the most accurate info will be located there.

IMDB is a joke. Are you kidding and Mojo and SBD are right usually an even # of times. I'll betcha Showbiz data's info is more accurate. Watch we'll know on Tuesday when actuals come out.

NICE!!! :D  :ghost:

$15.9 Million Opening for Ghost Rider!
Source: ShowBIZ Data
February 17, 2007

Sony Pictures and Mark Steven Johnson's adaptation of Marvel Comics Ghost Rider, starring Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes, rode home with an estimated $15.9 million its opening Friday, about $600,000 more than Johnson's Daredevil opened with over President's Day weekend four years ago. With that impressive an opening, Ghost Rider is looking likely to set a new record for a President's Day weekend opener if it hold up well enough to make over $45.1 million over the four-day weekend. Either way, it's likely to become Nicolas Cage's biggest opening movie to date by topping his 2004 hit National Treasure.

Yeah, most kids are out of school, federal offices are closed on Monday, though we have to go in, dammit. :cmad: That Sunday night will chalk up some decent sales as well as Monday afternoon.

I want to see it again. It was way better than Hulk, Daredevil, Elektra, and Superman Returns.

This movie IS Superman Returns. Both movies are very action light (SR = scenes of Superman flying around catching and lifting stuff; GR = Ghost Rider looking cool on his bike and flinging a chain to eliminate bad guys with ridiculous ease) Both films are disappointing to a degree because both should've and could've been much better given the character and the budget attached to both projects.

GR will mirror DD's box office run exactly. Big President's Day and coast barely past 100 million domestic.

So we´re looking at a 45-47m opening, higher than expected, actually. The real challenge here will be word of mouth. I´m not optimistic about that.

Remember next weekend is not a Holiday weekend so the drop off at the box office will be exaggerated because of this like it was for X3. Next Sunday is not followed by a Holiday so it'll be a much larger drop off from Saturda affecting the weekend total.

I expect a 60-65% drop off because of the Holiday factor. Which is not awful.

The number was neither a HUGE number nor was it bad...Daredevil number was also very good, but the movie dropped off steeply, and THAT's what kiled the box office, not the opening weekend number. The industry normal is a 2.5X multiple, so it deepens on how the moviegoing audince sizes up the competition at the B.O.

^ It's just a record setting number for Presidents day Friday. :) There will be a big drop off as there should be not only due to the early fan rush but because next Monday isn't a holiday so the sunday before will be normal. Also Ghost Rider was way more visually appealing to the kids than Daredevil and there's no Affleck in Ghost Rider. :) I think GR will hold up fine with a 60-65% drop next week thanks to the holiday effect...followed by 45-50% drops after that until 300 comes out.

I think all the snow this week (at least around here in the Baltimore area) was a boon to the movie business this weekend: People got cabin fever and were eager to go out ANYWHERE! My brother went to Muvico on Friday and said it was more crowded than he'd ever seen it (we both go there pretty regularly, and it sells more movie tickets than any movie theater location in the US). I went to the matinee this afternoon (Saturday) and the mall (and GR's theaters) were equally packed. It was like the week before Christmas!

It'll be very interesting to see if the rest of GR's opening weekend continues to mirror DD's. I think it'll do a bit better, due in part to the snowstorm earlier this week (wasn't there bad weather DURING the Prez Day weekend when DD was released, which might've hurt its B.O.?).

/\ Yep, think MSJ's releases are cursed. Lol.

I mean what are the odds of the same thing (snow storm) happening the week/weekend his movie/s is coming out?!

It might of made 15million, but that's before all the horrendous reviews came out.
I don't know how strong of an influence that has, but if it's combined with some bad word of mouth, this movie might not break even untill the dvd sales.

15 Mil on Friday....

http://boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/

Calculating based off the multipliers of Daredevil and Constantine, this will most likely make 40 mil by the time the weekend is out, all in all, a success for ghost rider. Which according to my projections means that the movie will barely crack 100 mil, tapering off at about 105 mil.

I knew it,the smallest amount.I would say that i predicted it,like in the other thread,i expect this movie to make 150 at least in total.

Marvel doesn't make movies to make money. They make them to sell the associated products and more comic books. This will give a bump to new comics and backlist.

The DVD will come out in time for HALLOWEEN and then watch a DVD release with the Extended Version around the same time that will include the deleted scenes .. and perhaps a re-release Theatrically for ole Hallow's Eve? :yay:

Well, it's to both make money on the movie and the merchandise.

Personally, they got about more than fifty dollars worth of GR merchandise and more- from me.

Sony though it's all about the movie.

Halloween??? This DVD will be out by July.

Yeah Halloween wouln't make sense. That's an unnormally long time for any DVD.

$16 million on friday. where are the idiots who said the movie will flop?

UPDATED 4-DAY ESTIMATES: 'Ghost Rider' Wins with $48 mil and Blazes to PTA Crown; 'Terabithia' 2nd with $31 mil
by Steve Mason

President’s Day Weekend belongs to Nicolas Cage and Ghost Rider (Sony). The Mark Steven Johnson-directed comic book adaptation was not shown to critics prior to its release, but this is the sort of flick that is critic-proof. It’s a good thing because reviews are starting to trickle in, and here’s a sampling:

“If Cage made a deal with the devil to never make a good movie again, Ghost Rider completes his transition from A-list star to industry punch line.”
-Matt Pais, MetroMix.com

“Undoubtedly one of the worst comic book adaptations to hit theatres since the genre’s recent resurgence.”
-David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews

“Ghost Rider is a joke – a monumentally foolish comic book movie with lots of unintentional laughs mixed with the intentional ones.”
-Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel

“Ghost Rider is very much a movie for 9 year olds that feels like it was made by a 9 year old. Even 14 or 15 year olds will feel too old for what passes as cool or dark in this edge-of-camp movie.”
-Devin Faraci, CHUD

“Call this the Legend of the 500-Mile Pothole.”
-Peter Canavese, OutNow

None of this is going to matter over the holiday weekend (although it doesn’t bode well for next weekend). Nic and his flaming head have scored an estimated $15.5 million Friday, and Ghost Rider will win the 4-day weekend with an estimated $48 million.

Assuming these numbers hold up, Ghost Rider will become the all-time 4-day President’s Day Weekend champ topping 2004’s 50 First Dates (Sony) at $45.1 million and Mark Steven Johnson’s 2003 comic book adaptation Daredevil (Fox) which delivered $45.0 million.

Industry tracking is notoriously unreliable when it comes to family films, but things didn’t look very encouraging for Bridge To Terabithia (Buena Vista) entering the 4-day frame. Many industry experts, including me, had the film in the high teens, but it was apparent early Friday afternoon that everyone had underestimated the Disney/Walden Media teaming. Despite a cast of relative unknowns, the special effects-laden film, based on the beloved Newberry Medal-winning children’s classic, has enjoyed a monstrous Friday of about $6.3 million and will likely deliver 4-day estimate of $31 million.

The Eddie Murphy holdover Norbit from Paramount suffered a 50% drop from its opening Friday churning out an estimated $4.4 million. Last weekend’s big winner, a fat suit/gender-bending comedy which received scathing reviews, is expected to pick up $22.5 million over the holiday weekend bringing its cume to nearly $65 million. My projection models show that it should finish with a total domestic gross in the mid-$90’s, and, with a little luck, it has a chance to be the first 2007 release to exceed $100 million.

The Drew Barrymore/Hugh Grant romantic comedy Music & Lyrics (Warner Bros), which opened on Wednesday, has enjoyed a Friday gross of $4 million. That should translate to a 4-day take of $17 million and a 6-day haul of $22.5 million. After out-grossing Music & Lyrics on Wednesday, Tyler Perry’s Daddy’s Little Girls (Lionsgate) has come back to earth. Perry’s hardcore fans rushed out to see the movie Wednesday, and the family drama has softened dramatically. Daddy’s Little Girls added an estimated $2.9 million Friday and should score $13.5 million over the holiday weekend. The 6-day total for Perry’s 3rd feature film will be approximately $19.1 million.

As expected, the laggard amongst new releases is Universal’s real-life spy thriller Breach. Despite a cast including Oscar winner Chris Cooper, Oscar nominee Laura Linney and Ryan Phillippe, the Billy Ray-directed film managed only a $2.9 million opening day. When the 4-day weekend is in the books, Breach will have registered just $10 million.
