yeah why do you think sony put out a sm3 teaser almost a year before it's release? they know howto hype up the fans. hence why i said hype. lol

I remember with Lord of the Rings they were hyping the sequels in Trailers even before the first one was released.

now thats what you call some serious hype.

Are you serious? Hype right now mean a whole lot. Hype a whole year before a film is released helps you to lock in more audience.
You get some hyped for a movie and they'll follow news about it up until release date.

Truth is truth.

Shrek 3 is out of the question, because it will not make even $300m. If you look at the last 2 years, you will find that animation movies makes at nowadays lower numbers than we think.
That's because recent animation movies simply haven't been as good..

Shrek has the capacity to bring in huge numbers.

Yeah, but usually you can look at DVD sales and realize which movie has chances to win, and which doesn't.

Besides, I see Spidey 3 vs. Shrek 3 as Spidey 1 and SW-II, where Spidey 1 had also 2 weeks and better marketing strategy.

Hype right now is superflous, especially when you are talking about huge films like Spidey and Shrek because they have an established presence in peoples minds. The only important hype for Shrek is the last few months leading up to release, to remind people a new movie is coming and to get people warmed up. You guys judging hype a year before release is ridiculous I gaurantee it.

I have to agree, the average person who isn't a net watcher doesn;t care about any film until it's near release, the 2 months leading to release are all that matters to hook those who aren't fanboys

A completely new franchise would definately benifit from hype this early, like the teaser for The Transformers movie, so the idea isn't completely meritless, but for Shrek is really doesn't matter, a few months before release humankind will be flooded with Shrek information to the point of overkill :D

He's a fan.

The idiocy continues.

Try reading through my posts as I've replied to the same remark at least three times.

Why the flip are you people attempting to make fun of him for making a solid argument?

An attempt at levity for an over discussed subject that won't be resolved for another year?

Now, I can understand why Spidey 3 has chances to make $140m opening with $58m opening day.

If it makes so high numbers, it will get to $230-240m next week, what means... Shrek 3 won't make so much money.

Still, I doubt any of them (Spidey 3, POTC3, Shrek 3 or even HP-5) will make more than $400m.

It is going to be a battle this summer. Spidey 3 and POTC 3 battling for number one and two, harry potter: phoenix, and shrek 3 battling for 3 and 4. from there its a huge toss up, I think the Simpsons is going to be a flop, Bourne Ultimatum and Rush Hour 3 will be alot of fun, but wont be monsters, Oceans 13 and Live free or die hard will be alright.

to my point, Titanic, LOTR: Return of the King, POTC: Dead Man's Chest, are the top grossing movies of all time (worldwide).
Titanic: 1.8 Billion
LOTR: 1.5 Billion
POTC: 1.1 Billion
all are rough figures.

my question/discussion is whether or not this is the summer Titanic is toppled. Spidey 3 and POTC 3 are looking to be huge and definately joining the billion dollar club world wide. does anyone think they will even near 1.8 billion, or even 1.5 billion?

In my opinion, im saying Spidey 3 wins the summer and ends with roughly 1.1 - 1.2 billion world wide. POTC 3 will probably match Dead mans chest with 1.1 billion as well...

any other thoughts?

There is already a thread for this, and the conclusion was that Shrek 3 was going to win the battle of the box office.

Then you must not have read that other thread... the obvious says POTC wins but I am not counting out Spiderman.... I can't see SM3 being a 400 million dollar flick though... 150 opening weekend wouldn't suprise me though...
