The two biggest releases of 2016, who takes the crown as the biggest Boxoffice grosser of the year?

My money is on Rogue One. As massive as I think MCU is, I believe the only thing bigger as a franchise is Star Wars. After the insane numbers of SW7, and the Disney marketing machine at it's back, Rogue one should take the 2016 crown.

I think Civil War will have a higher gross. While I agree that Star Wars has the bigger franchise, this film doesn't have any of the original characters like TFA did, so the casuals might not flock to it like they did TFA.

That and I'm getting tired of the Death Star element in basically every Star Wars film. There has to be another reason for TIE Fighters and X-Wings to battle in outer space.

(remembers all the claims of AOU making more money than TFA...)

This guy says hi:

Civil War was surprisingly modest success. I'm leaning towards Rogue One.

I'll vote CW. Most franchise stuff(even seemingly very well received stuff like CW) has seemed like it has hit a type of ceiling and maybe audiences are just bucking the trend a bit of pre-packaged IP's being the only game in town. Most sequels and remakes this year took a downturn so even if Rogue One fires on all cylinders it may still be facing a natural disadvantage. Now quality-wise, I'd be very surprised if RO was as good as CW. I think it'll be better than SW7(which I only sorta thought was ok) but this is still from the guy who gave us Godzilla'2014. The cinematography was great but Edwards seriously dropped the ball with his actors(who I know for a fact all have a lot of talent in them). I head his original movie Monsters was the same way. I can only hope that Lucasfilm had measures in place to shore up this weakness of his or RO will be more of the same fare. Beautiful to look at(the trailers prove this at least) but still dull as dishwater from a character POV.

Rogue One. And I'm looking forward to it a great deal.

Worldwide? Rogue One.

Domestic? Neither. I think Rogue One will do around 450M.

It really depends on how much the audience embraces a "non-Star Wars Star Wars movie". Its the first real spinoff, and a spinoff where the only major classic character is the villain. Its not about Jedi, or heroic pulp adventure derring do- its a WWII spy/commando movie, where its very obvious most of the heroes will die.

Touche! He's likely just a cameo though, not the focus.

I can't imagine that he'll just be a cameo. I expect him to be an overseer during the movie and then take to action in the end, probably being the doom of the protagonists. The focus will of course be on the rebel team though.

This one's a tough call. I certainly don't think that Rogue One will touch The Force Awakens when it comes to total gross, domestic or worldwide.

The only reason why I'm guessing that it won't beat Civil War is because that while yes, it's Star Wars, the only massively popular character returning in this film is Vader and he doesn't have a huge role. The Force Awakens, on the other hand, had the promise of seeing Han, Chewie, Leia, Luke, C-3PO and R2-D2 again in a story set 30 years after Return of the Jedi and that was a huge draw for people. Rogue One should make a lot of money regardless. It's piggybacking on the success of The Force Awakens and that'll give it a huge boost, but that one also had great word of mouth that gave it legs. If this one isn't as warmly received, it won't bode well for reaching $1 billion.

You do realize that the film is set right before the events of episode 4 so that have to show the Death Star.

Yeah just like Joker was going to be a huge deal in Suicide Squad.

I personally am looking forward more to Rogue One than I was Force Awakens, but this box office show down is a tough call. It won't be long until annual Star Wars movies start to wear thin, but not quite yet...that being said though, I don't expect RO to beat TFA, and the GA is probably anticipating Episode VIII more than RO.

Oh yeah, but there'll probably be a bunch of clueless ones who go into Rogue One thinking it's following The Force Awakens.

Just on the release date alone, I think Rogue One wins. It will be the only film going in December. I see a huge opening weekend, followed by Christmas weekend, then New Year's weekend.

Plus you can bet Vader will be shown more and more leading up to December. The hype train hasn't even gotten started yet.

And they are likely gonna pimp the hell out of his presence as they get closer to release, just like Suicide Squad did with the Joker.

There's a reason the big money shot of the last trailer was a 2 second shot of Vader from behind

My favorite post ever was the person who said Age of Ultron would obliterate Force Awakens at the box office because Star Wars was a dead franchise that nobody under 30 cared about anymore.

Civil War was the most entertaining movie I've seen this year. But even so, the MCU will always be #2 to Star Wars.

I don't expect Rogue One to be $2B. But there has to be something so wrong with it, to make less than Civil War WW.

I can't imagine fatigue with the 2nd movie in.

I can. I think Civil War has a chance to beat Rogue One worldwide. Rogue one has more competition than Ep 7, the other movie studios don't seem that intimidated by it. Its a spin off, it seems to have dull characters and China still don't care about Star Wars despite Disney's pandering to the Chinese market.
