^Still amazed Slovis has not won for Cinematography. The man has such a unique vision for shooting Breaking Bad and the show would be completely different (and inferior) if not for his brilliant camera work.
Slovis has that great eye for distance shots (see: Crawl Space, Gus/Walt meeting in the desert), super cool shots (over the shoulder Heisenberg), creative POV shots (mounting cameras on the weirdest things, like shovels or vacuums), and even his medium character shots are never ordinary. He does amazing things with foregrounds and backgrounds, and it seems like every shot has depth/layers to it. Also love the his ability to frame shots. Always brilliant. One of the underrated, unsung heroes of this show.
It also ties into the editors, who know how long to let shots linger and when to cut to another brilliant Slovis shot. But Willingham has been recognized twice, which is great.
Okay, love rant for Slovis over.
I can't be the only one though. Anyone else agree? Any cool cinematography moments that stick with you?
I couldn't agree more. Slovis should get an Emmy asap. For me there’s really not a single show right now that comes close to Breaking Bad in terms of the visuals. It has its own distinctive style and it uses exterior shots so well unlike any other shows and it’s in the level of cinematic. I just love the uses of time-lapse, this season particurly use it in almost every episodes, just wonderful.
One thing I’ll always look forward to it’s the cold opening. There’s so many good ones to choose from but the ones that’ll stick to me always it’s the Walt’s pants falling down from the sky in the pilot and the whole of season 2 where's black and white images pieces together were the aftermath of Walt's house from the mid-air collision over Albuquerque and that the pink teddy bear was the only colour objects we see in the sequence is so striking.
