Breaking Bad - Part 1

^Still amazed Slovis has not won for Cinematography. The man has such a unique vision for shooting Breaking Bad and the show would be completely different (and inferior) if not for his brilliant camera work.

Slovis has that great eye for distance shots (see: Crawl Space, Gus/Walt meeting in the desert), super cool shots (over the shoulder Heisenberg), creative POV shots (mounting cameras on the weirdest things, like shovels or vacuums), and even his medium character shots are never ordinary. He does amazing things with foregrounds and backgrounds, and it seems like every shot has depth/layers to it. Also love the his ability to frame shots. Always brilliant. One of the underrated, unsung heroes of this show.

It also ties into the editors, who know how long to let shots linger and when to cut to another brilliant Slovis shot. But Willingham has been recognized twice, which is great.

Okay, love rant for Slovis over.

I can't be the only one though. Anyone else agree? Any cool cinematography moments that stick with you?

I couldn't agree more. Slovis should get an Emmy asap. For me there’s really not a single show right now that comes close to Breaking Bad in terms of the visuals. It has its own distinctive style and it uses exterior shots so well unlike any other shows and it’s in the level of cinematic. I just love the uses of time-lapse, this season particurly use it in almost every episodes, just wonderful.

One thing I’ll always look forward to it’s the cold opening. There’s so many good ones to choose from but the ones that’ll stick to me always it’s the Walt’s pants falling down from the sky in the pilot and the whole of season 2 where's black and white images pieces together were the aftermath of Walt's house from the mid-air collision over Albuquerque and that the pink teddy bear was the only colour objects we see in the sequence is so striking.

How is Gus a hero exactly?
No, they just made him feel like he was the hero of the story about to get his fate. By hero I meant the protagonist. By the end of the series I was much more on Gus's side than on Walt's. It was Walt willing
to poison a child
to get his way, not Gus.

I sort of see what you mean though, you can't help but root for him too after the flashback in the episode Hermanos. You can understand the reason why he double-crossed the cartel and enjoys to torment Tio and you are glad when he got his vengeance on Don Eladio. Although Gus's an intriguing character, part because he's similar to Walt his demise is inevitable since it's an essential part of Walt's further descent into being a villian. Despite that Walt's resposible for a poisoning of a child I still don't hate him. I don't think the reason why he did it was justified and even though he did to save his family also I just don't hate him, not yet.

Did you think Gus was bluffing when he threatened to kill Walt's newborn baby? lol. What Walt did is still disgusting (that, and using his neighbour as bait) but they were pretty much on the same level. They did a good job of humanizing Gus, but when he brought Walt into the desert and told him that they were done professionally it was a great reminder that Gus had to go.

Just in time for Halloween.

And what I just found out...it could be foreshadowing to 2 seasons later...

I immediately thought it as soon as I saw Gus' face. Back then I saw the teddy bear as a symbolism of Walt suddenly drowning with all of the criminal activities he's doing and the fact that his family left him, which was the only reason why he cooked meth in the first place but now it also works as a foreshadowing as well, just brilliant.

Is the next season foreshadowed in a similar way?

Maybe only time will tell?

I doubt this would happen but I'd actually like to see Gretchen and Elliot returning, knowing that Walt blames them for stealing his research (at least that's what's being claimed) I'd like to see Walt out of pure hatred destroying their lives.

I could see them returning, to me I see Walts anger and frustration rooted in his research being stolen and thus leading his life as not being rich and fortunate. I think season 5 will be the fall of Walter White/Heisenberg.

I'm still curious on what went down, I wonder why he left Gretchen and his research without any explanation. Walt has a remarkable reputation but he's back in street-level. Despite that he's going to be comfortable with the position he's on now and after Gus' death and the destruction of the meth lab Hank knows he's in the right path and is closing in on him, also if Jesse finds out the truth behind Brock's poisoning.

I've a feeling the cancer has already returned this season but he's not telling to his family but I bet it's going to strike back when it's the most inappropriate time. The second part of the season has to be the downfall, after now there's no way out and it's what the show has being build up to, which it's going to be spectacular.

man , this song is great. went perfectly with the ending.

you wanne know the episode titles in which the teddy was seen?

1. seven-thirty-seven, 2. down 3.over 4. abq....this man is a true genius..read it...

What an amazing finale that was....was I so wrong to want to see Gus get away with murder and survive another day to give Walt some more hell?

I was surprised that Gus died without dishing out more damage to Walt's family. I was expecting more horrible consequences and perhaps the loss of some main characters. I was not expecting a finale that would tidy up the season so well, even though there are still loose ends. Perhaps it had to do with the uncertainty of AMC's negotiations to bring the show back next year. I also hope they don't break up the next 16 episodes into two seasons. Just let them run back to back.

I predict that Gus' past in Chile is going to bring an even bigger enemy to try to take out Walt somehow. Maybe that's why the Cartel did not want to outright kill Gus when they killed his hermano. It will be interesting, too bad it was not foreshadowed, or was it? Also, plenty of evidence and loose ends have been left behind that will come back to haunt Jesse and Walt. The tape back in Mexico, Mike, and whatever evidence Gus had laying around his laptops and in his residence.

As a matter of fact, they already found a video of Gus in his laptop that will prove invaluable in drawing up his psychological profile, an insight into his character that the DEA will find useful in making sense of Gus' criminal empire.

Gus' past life (and the ramifications of his death) is definitely something I'm looking forward to seeing.

One thing I'm a little surprised that didn't happen was after knowing that Gus' had died alongside Hector, I would have though rather than the authorities "not knowing what to make of it" you'd think Hank would have been in an "I told you so!" mood.

Hank's definitely going to feel like he's in the right track, since the meth lab was destroyed as well is only going to confirm that Gus wasn't what he seems on the surface. It'd be interesting if there's an informant in the DEA that could be connected to whatever Gus was back in Chile, just speculating here. I hope we get to know Gus' past but I also don't mind with his past being ambiguous.

well the DEA has no clue about what happend. they can put some things together but overall they are clueless. it's going to be interesting, whether walt and jesse are going to keep cooking and in what kind of stage...small cooking or big cooking.

O.k- i usually watch this OnDemand, but for some reason my OnDemand doesn't have the finale(?); has the finale aired yet, or is it this coming Sunday?

I don't want to read any of the last few pages of this thread incase it has; just incase this sounds like a dumb question...thanks.

Definitely one of the greatest. And the award for best ending to a TV episode goes to Crawl Space. Those last ten minutes were unbelievable, jaw-dropping stuff.
