Snyder on the bad reviews:
"I’m a comic book guy and I made the movie based as much as I could on that aesthetic. And so I don’t know how else to do it 100%, so it is what it is."

so, I just read Poni and Scarecrow's spoilers about Superman from the last thread.

wow!! just.........wow!! :(

and to hear that about [BLACKOUT]Jimmy Olsen[/BLACKOUT] is equally depressing and infuriating.

I'm still seeing the film this Saturday, and I'm still willing to give it a chance.

but the more I hear and read about it..............it's not good.

this thing about Superman especially just makes me sad, angry, and just disappointed overall.

Watch the movie and make judgement for yourself - I will be doing that later today.

Regarding the characterization of Superman, Snyder went dark in MoS. Zod was rightfully dark. But it seems like Snyder went even darker for BvS. I mean with a Superman like this, is there really a need for DARKseid? That's going to have people jumping off bridges.

I have no empathy for Snyder's Superman. He doesn't come off as relatable in the slightest. This whole critical fallout is like a nightmare. Going to go dark until I watch the movie lol

I left thinking I never want to see this Superman again. Doubt I'll even rewatch this on Blu-ray

"What the hell are those two doing with their mouths?" - Zack Snyder

While I do have some issues with the Supergirl show, I'm enjoying the series and the tone of the show is much more in line with how I like my Superman.

it's fun, uplifting, optimistic. y'know.........hopeful.

They cracked the code with the flash tv show. If I were the dc execs I would not hesitate handing some movie duties off to the tv show creator. The flash has a great balance of drama/ fun/ pure comicbook feeling. The show nails the story but just needs a bigger budget behind it.

Greg Berlanti ought to be producing these movies. What he has done with Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow is amazing

Dark and brooding only works for batman however. Making superman the same way is a mistake from the get go. His costume should pop in bright colors and be the opposite of batman.

Yes. They should have kept it till day of release. They were banking on ticket presales. Treat it like MOS. Frontload the hell out of it and hope for the best later on.

I don't think WB was expecting the reviews to be this poor, they probably figured it would land somewhere around MOS. Otherwise you're right in hindsight, they should've lifted the embargo on the release date. Granted the fans and educated viewers would suspect the movie is not that good if WB did that, but WB probably wouldn't have left as much money on the table.

It's more than aesthetics.

Cretinous.

Superman goes to Africa to save Lois. It was a trap set my Luthor. Jimmy Olsen (who is actually a CIA guy undercover as a cameraman) gets executed. Lois is taken prisoner. When the mercenaries hear Superman incoming they bug out. Lois gets used as a human shield by the warlord. Superman lands in the building with them. Lois drops her hands from the warlord's arm that's around her and nods to Supes. He smirks in an "I understand" way. Then spears the warloard at superspeed, busting through the stone wall of the building and through the next building.

My screening last night had a bunch of kids in it. One group in particular of around 10 year olds was very upset after it was over. They looked and acted like they just got out of a hostage situation. One of their mom's was trying really hard to make them happy saying "let's get some ice cream who wants ice cream" over and over. Why a superman movie would want to affect kids in this way is beyond me.

and that's just sad..........:csad:

I mean, I can understand that reaction to the ending.

but it's all the other stuff.

I can tell you right now. The spoilers on which I've stumbled so far are deplorable.

Unless people on here are lying, I will not like this film.

Too bad they're going out of their way to distance the TV universe from the movie universe.

For those who've seen it:

In the two brief Flash scenes in BvS his look and vibe seems just as serious and so unlike the show. Aquaman and Cyborg are no different. I really believe this is the thematic thread for all the DCU

Ironically kid version of me would have loved Deadpool. I know it's rated R but still. The critical reaction to this BvS has all the makings of a case study on how RT/critical reaction and WOM can make or break a franchise.

I will.

but I'm certainly not liking what I'm hearing and reading.

If someone had told you Superman kills in MOS before you watched it, how would you have taken it?

It's all on context, man. We will know it once we have seen it.

A quote from Cavill...

“What is really going to matter, I believe, is what the audience says,” the Brit explains, “Because they’re the ones who are buying tickets, they’re the ones who want to see more of this kind of story or not and so the audience’s voice is loudest and after this weekend the audience, at least partly, will have spoken.”

I don't know if this is necessarily true for audiences as a whole, I think these are the kinds of stories that SOME people want to see. They want that "real world", gritty, darker version of Superman that you get in comic books at times. I can understand that as a desire. If you are a dedicated, hardcore fan of that work, then why wouldn't you want it?

The thing I have a problem with is the version they like is that it's a "take" on the Superman character and not the definitive version of Superman. This is just my opinion (and perhaps the opinion of many others based on the feedback), but major feature films in wide release based on one of the most iconic and popular fictional characters in American history should probably give us something closer to the definitive version, not some "take" on the character. A "take" probably belongs to the smaller scale, such as television shows and cartoons.

One thing most people are not expecting when taking your children to see a Superman movie is a dark and brooding hero within a bleak, depressing landscape. That's not the way the character has been portrayed to the general public over the last almost 80 years. Maybe this is the version most hardcore fans want, but most people want a heroic version closer to Reeve. Is that fair? Maybe not, but that's what people expect and I think rule #1 to all storytelling (Snyder, are you listening?) is you must meet your audience's expectations or otherwise you've failed.

Thats who I was thinking of, thanks.

Berlanti is there kevin fiege just on tv. Call him up to the big leagues, cant be worse then snyder, atleast he seems like he has a handle on these characters.

Well, it seems like the context here is flirting with Lois. Great context.

I didn't like it when I heard about it back then.

just like I'm not liking what I'm hearing right now.

It's a shame that Chris Evans' Cap is a better superman than the actual Superman is in these movies.

No it's not flirting.

It's literally Superman giving zero you-know-whats.

Him and Lois later have a conversation about how he has nothing to apologise for.
