BvS BvS Rottentomatoes score - how important will it be, and what do you hope for? - Part 8

Damn, it's down to 29%. It's a good movie imo.

I hardly doubt he was a suicide bomber, lex most likely promised him a oppurtunity to make superman look bad by telling his story. Just gave lex a way to plant a bomb. Pretty extreme jump you did there

No, they show Wally making the bombs. But disgusting and offensive? Hyperbole.

I think this movie would have done better if it were a proper intellectual sequel to MoS.

Instead, they bring Superman to a hearing before congress... and then blow up congress and lose the plot point.

Elaborate?

I'm on Team Cap.

Civil War has cause for concern re: critics.

My predictions have been consistently wrong on this front, but I think it could cop a lot of criticism for the same reasons BvS did.

Elaborate?

Are you serious?

Bringing Superman before congress was a great ****ing idea.

They bragged about it in the previews. The previews didn't brag about the uninteresting jar of piss, they bragged about bringing Superman before congress.

Then in the movie: nothing. The jar of piss had as much dialogue as Superman. The plot point was wasted on a dumb terrorist attack.

The critics are generally receptive to comic book movies. There are tons of comic book movies that get great scores.

Uh huh. There's also a news reporter talking about how he's expected to make a speech. It's called subverting expectations.

How does this one scene not make it a proper intellectual sequel?

I really don't care what the Rotten Tomatoes score is. I love the movie and that's what matters to me.

They got rid of something interesting with something boring (the jar of piss, the terrorist attack) because they couldn't write the interesting scene.

Subverting expectations: In this case replacing something smart with a jar of piss.

You can reduce it all you want, but let's let pretend there was no scene there. A message was delivered that led to Clark growing as a character. The scene is not about a jar of piss.

For being a terrible movie?

The camera lingers on that jar of piss for a long time. It's clearly important to Snyder who obsesses with the frame. I think the camera even zooms in to the jar of piss, the same way the camera zooms in on the funeral home owner at the start of The Godfather.

It's quite funny how that sounds like a rude mockery of the scene and then you realize that it's a sober, literal description.

Much like several other things in this movie that are receiving a lot of heat, I think the jar of piss could have worked conceptually but completely failed in the execution.

That actually took me out of the movie for a second. The shot lingers far too long.

No, they really needed the slow build up to the slow turning of the piss jar, so we could read what it said. How else would we have understood the point if we couldn't read the whole label since this movie is too complex for us to understand?

Way to avoid the point.

It's gotten the best test screening receptions of any Marvel movie yet.

At this point I've learned that rumored positive buzz from the inside isn't always reliable, while the negative buzz often is.

Don't they say that for a lot of movies?

I don't know. Do you have any examples? I know Marvel haven't stopped people from tweeting their opinions and Peyton Reed and James Gunn have praised it as well.

lol no. For one thing, Civil War will not be anywhere near as grimdark and monotone as BvS, and that's not even scratching the surface on why CW will likely be a hit with critics.

I think one thing I was really disappointed in was how aesthetically unappealing this film was. Man of Steel was beautiful while everything in this looks like a video game cut scene, and a dark one at that.

Definitely. Better cinematography in Man of Steel.
