The Dark Knight Can the dark knight do well INTERNATIONALLY?

True, but THE DARK KNIGHT has much more going for it than BATMAN BEGINS box-office wise. People are more familiar with what the Batman franchise is doing now. Plus it doesn't hurt that this marketing campaign is spreading word about this film like wildfire. This much good pub will certainly make its voice heard at the ticket offices.

The final scene in Batman Begins is one of the best teaser trailers ever made. It did quite a bit of the legwork. There are plenty of people out there who did not even know about Batman Begins until it was on home video. Quite a few of them are bound to have enjoyed it enough to want to see the sequel in the theater. That's why I think an increase to $250 million is not out of the question, especially with the Joker involved.

yup i agree with that

I imagine this film will do better than BB for a couple reasons:

1) It's got the Joker in it, he is way more iconic, well know and popular than Scarecrow et all. This should encourage more people to come
2) The Marketing campaign is more inventive AND more widespread

And that's power money can't buy... oh wait it is :p

Also, is future box office performance a spoiler? *shrugs*

Who cares? No one ever posts in the non-spoiler forums anyway! :cwink::woot:

But the marketing campaign is pretty much limited to US only...they need to do something abou that in other country as well...

A new Batman movie is always a huge deal in the UK, right? Are you guys already feeling the hype over there? How did Begins do in the UK theaters?

Well I'm feeling the hype thats for sure :) BB grossed $30million over here (just looked it up)

I used to read Empire all the time(great magazine by th way)and I remember they had these UK box office records on every issue. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't $30 million a great result? How much was that in the UK pounds? You think it's a given that TDK will do even better than BB?

ermmm well now it's about £15 million pounds, back then I'm not sure, since the pound has gotten alot stronger against the dollar. Yeh I definitely think it's a given this will do better for the reasons i detailed in my previous post :)

I guess TDK has the UK covered. You guys seem to be in the Batman bandwagon pretty firmly. And of course you are b/c Chris Nolan was born in London so he is your main man!

Well, at least we have Renny Harlin...

Yeah he's finnish alright. His real name is Lauri Harjola. He was doing pretty good in the early 90's with Clliffhanger and Die Hard 2 under his belt. But after that something happened. I'm not sure what it was but he received some lousy scripts and he directed some really lousy movies(Cuttthroat Island, Driven etc.).

But somehow the guy is still working in Hollywood and his latest movie, Cleaner, got nice reviews so maybe his career still isn't over. And that's a good thing b/c he's our only guy in the major movie business. I'm just hoping he never directs a Batman movie! :woot:

I think Hong Kong is covered as well...their first MAJOR blockbuster set there!

Hmm..batman seems to be very popular in alot of country...but why can't it gross to casino royale level?

Well there you go! So practically you are in the Renny Harlin bandwagon! :woot:

quite simply "comic book" movies turn alot of people off, I know it's narrow-minded and it sucks, but it's the truth.

Damn that's a good question! Bond is a legend but so is Batman so go figure. Well in Finland Bond is more famous than Batman and Bond movies have such a long history here. Finnish people are always quoting Bond but they never quote Batman. All the finns know what Bond is about but only those finns who are comic book fans know what Batman is about.

Then how did SM3 managed to get such a high box office intake even though most people say it sucks?

And SM series is supposed to be less serious as compared to batman...

I'm a member from the boards from the Belgian Batman fansite. We ALL love Batman and i think many other people who don't spend so much time as we do on the internet gonna watch The Dark Knight.

I think many people her in Belgium and The Netherlands loved Batman Begins. Especially because its more realistic how a man decides to wear a suit. And how it comes he looks like a bat.

I'm already, with you all, looking very forward to see it. Only one bad thing: We in Belgium get the movie on august 8!!! And want it in July!!!

Steve

Belgium in da house! Nice to meet you!

A question. Do you guys dub your movies over there in Belgium?

Normal movies like Batman not, but animationmovies are dubbed like Ratatouille, Bee Movie and also Underdog.

It really sux when i must go to Kinepolis and watch Underdog spoken in Dutch!!!

Are also from Belgium maybe, Juha?

Steve

you know you should really stop comparing Bond and Batman.Bond has a 50 years of cinema story and Batman close to 20.plus the bond franchise nearly died in the '90's-early '00's and it got born again thanx to Graig.Batman comparing to Bond died off real soon.* years after the franchise began.People who saw B&R (even the ones who were true fans) were really disapointed and some swore to write Batsy off.now with BB everybody (and a lot of DVD fans) stopped by and took a look.and they saw that BB is not a regular comic book film.it's a film by itself.believable.i know that the ones who saw BB even an hour ago will definetely see TDK.it's a serious film that doesnt make them feel embarassed to tell their friends they are watching.TDK will be a huge hit.i am not saying it'll fly over Bond or Harry Procter but it will keep up with them.
that is of course if they do a nice promotional work in other countries too.(Greece for example!!!)
sorry for the long post!!!

and keep in my mind that Bond and Harry even if they dont do a promotional campaign will still be a huge hit because its almost an annual thing.every year there's a bond and a potter.

It will be bigger than Batman Begins, without a doubt.

I've watched BB in the movie theater about six times, and every time they showed the Joker card at the end of it, people cheered and some even applauded.

I think that the Joker is a character probably as much popular as Batman. And now people don't have the bitter taste of Batman & Robin, most of the people I know (non Batman fans) that watched BB, they liked it a lot.

To concur with batman gr, to compare any franchise internationally to Bond is unfair. Bond’s British pedigree (they’re seen as British movies, even though they’re made by an American studio, like Harry Potter) and consistent use of international locations has always made it very popular in the non-American markets.

Also, the international markets used to just be icing on the cake for American studios – now they’re a big part of it. Making roughly as much overseas as domestic is seen as a success (which BB did)

The other thing that is often forgotten is how well BB did on DVD, sales and rental, creating a lot of good will towards the franchise. I expect a similar box office jump as there was between X-Men and X2.
