Cast a Thundarr Movie

Okay, brand new casting suggestions.

Thundarr The Barbarian: Charlie Hunnam (Sons Of Anarchy). I just saw an ad for the show (haven't got cable so I can't watch it) and Charlie has the perfect look to play Thundarr.

Ookla The Mok: Mark "Conan" Stevens (Game Of Thrones, Spartacus, The Hobbit, Man-Thing). He actually contacted me expressing interest in playing the role.

Princess Ariel: Ellen Wong (Scott Pilgrim vs The World). She's a very good actress, young, athletic, with a background in martial arts. And if you Google her image, she LOOKS the part.

Sabian The Wizard: Al Leong (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Big Trouble In Little China, The Scorpion King, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Kung Fu: The Legend Continues). Yeah, I'm not budging on this one. The story should be an origins story, which means the villain should be Princess Ariel's stepfather. AL Leong has the right look, and is a highly underrated actor.

Zogarr The Barbarian: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (The Scorpion King, The Rundown, Faster, Walking Tall). Thundarr needs an opponent who will challenge him physically, which is why Zogarr is written into the story. And The Rock has the physical presence and the acting chops to pull off the character.

I dunno about Al Leong. He's a great weaponmaster and stuntman, but how's his acting strength? Especially as THE villain of the franchise, who in modern hero movies usually carries the entire film on his shoulders.

Hiroyuki Sanada is an Asian actor, who's been part of the Royal Shakespeare Company too, so he'd be perfect in any "master wizard" role. Also, if you fancast a mixed girl as Ariel, that gives you more freedom to not have to choose an Asian actor for Sabian. Hailee Steinfeld if you want someone younger, Kristen Kreuk if you want someone older (though that woman doesn't really age much as far as I can tell). Though if you end up shooting this film for real, Vancouver is crawling with mixed-race actresses.

Al Leong's acting skills are actually highly underrated. I have seen him in a few roles where he was the primary villain (the episode of Kung Fu: The Legend Continues being one example). If given the opportunity to shine, I think he'd do great.

I had considered Kristin Kruek as Ariel earlier on this thread. However she's too old to play her in an origins story. Perhaps if the film were to just start off with the three characters already knowing each other like they did on the show, but the series' fanbase isn't strong enough for such a story. The people unfamiliar with the show would be totally lost, and will have little to no emotional investment in the characters.

As for Hailee Steinfield? I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with her body of work. But the problem with using mixed race actresses, is they sometimes come off looking TOO white. Like the actress they cast as the black girl in the Jem & The Holigrams movie. If that girl were any less black she would be clear. IMO, better to go with an actress who is ACTUALLY the same race as the character. In this case, Asian.

A number of local actresses want to play her in my movie trailer, most of them are Chinese. So there's no shortage of up & comers here in the Vancouver area. For a major Hollywood production, though, they might want someone with a little more drawing power. Ellen Wong might not exactly be a household name, but she's more well known than someone who's completely UNKNOWN.

We'll see what happens with my script over the next couple of years. Who knows? It just might get made and become the next big thing.

Let me be the first internet nerd to accuse you of raping my childhood because you made the colour of the Sunsword orange instead of yellow. :argh:

Actually I made it gold encrusted with rubies.

A video of my casting choices, using (mostly) local up & coming talent. The only one not a local actor is Conan Stevens (known to GoT fans as "The Mountain" Ser Gregor), but that's because he actually contacted me and told me he wants to play Ookla should I get my movie off the ground.

Thanks for that. I loved this show when i was a kid.
We all know a movie version would ( most likely ) be crap because the director would think he/she knows best and would change what made it so good to start with.

Depends on the director. And the writer, the cast, the producers, the budget, and a whole slew of other things.

For example, Joss Whedon or Peter Jackson would probably make a kickass movie adaptation, especially with a budget between 50 and 100 million dollars.

Michael Bay? It'll probably look really cool, but he'd change too many story elements and piss off his core fanbase.

The guy who did the recent disaster "Jem & The Holograms: INO"? Or Uwe Boll? Yeah, they'd f**k it up.

Actually the problem would most likely come from studio execs interfering with the director and creative team.

Look at what happened to the prequel of The Thing. Originally most of the VFX were done practically, with only a few CG enhancements. Then the studio said "No. We want ALL CGI VFX." And thus we got the piece of crap that came out, which failed with audiences, critics, AND at the box office.

Yes, I agree with that now after bvs and especially JL.
