The Mandalorian Chapter Fifteen Spoiler Discussion

So Mayfeld says that you need to scan your face in order to use the machine, so I'm thinking it compares your face with some kind of database to make sure the user is authorised to use it. Mando walks over there and uses and I'm like "Are we gonna find out he used to work for the empire?", but he just scans his face and that's that?

Other than that, really fun episode. The moving inners of Slave 1 looked cool, I can't remember exactly how the inside has been depicted before in the EU.
This to my mind SHOULD be big.

Was Mando keeping something real close to the vest that he felt he had to pull to make this worth it after Mayfeild flaked? Is Mando in the system with clearances? If so... Why not do this from the jump? If not, then okay, his face being recorded has GOT to come up again, right?

I can't imagine the members of his covert seeing a computer recording of him in Imp armor, face out at an Imperial base is going to do him any favors if it gets to them.

I liked that aspect as well, but who is morally grey in Rogue One? I guess maybe Saw, but does that really apply to anyone else?
Cassian offs an informant right off the bat who was already putting his life at risk for the Rebel spy, and not because the guy was a direct threat, was about to call Stormtroopers over on purpose or betray Cassian. Cassian had to get out of there with the information he had and couldn't risk this guy talking and thus unraveling whatever other operations and operatives the Rebellion had going on. You don't get the sense that Cassian is happy with it but he does it without much hesitation. We can justify it all we want but I'm betting no matter how we laid it out that characters family would find it weak tea.

We also got the whole Erso assassination sub plot with Rebel military telling Cassian, "Forget the orders from the civilian council... I'm ordering you to kill this man." It's not just Saw's "militants" that we see going to extremes. That's how I saw it in Rogue One, anyway.

I was wondering about that myself.
If he worked for the Empire he wouldn’t have needed Mayfield.
I was thinking maybe the scan is mostly looking for known enemies of the Empire rather than authorized users.
I think it's something that will be used in the narrative to cause trouble for our hero when/if he comes into contact with members of his Covert again.

Nice to see Juggernaut tanks and Shoretroopers again. I do like the Juggernaut driver armor.

I liked the Operation Cinder mention. Good backstory for Mayfeld. I just loved the moment of shock after Mayfeld blasted the Imperial officer.

Mayfield's arc makes me think how much Finn's potential story was wasted.

Mayfield is what Finn should have been. A soldier thats been in the ****, seen horrible ****, and done horrible ****. A cynic that doesn't believe in anything when Rey finds him. He should have started out like DJ was in TLJ and ****ed Rey over, because that's what people do and nothing matters. Then he goes back and rescues Rey and she could have cracked that cynical exterior and found a good man who just lost faith and hope in anything. Then Finn could have wanted to save his brothers in the First Order the way Rey saved him.

have to say i really like the repaint on Boba's armor it has not looked that good since Empire wow
On the cutting room floor:

Boba spending days repainting and polishing the armor as well as getting the Jawa/Cobb stink out of it.

The beige troopers are Shore Troopers, as seen in Rogue One.
Thanks.

I remember lots of "new" Imps and vehicles were showcased in R1 but honestly never took the time to have a proper rundown.

Another good episode, different to the last few but in a good way and Bill Burr was excellent in this and prefered him much more than in season 1, rounded out the character a lot more and made a nice little arch for him.

Just hope the final episode is a nice big fat one with so many characters we want to see come together for a fitting finale to the season which it totally deserves to go out in style.

Can not wait to rewatch this season again, so much good stuff here.

So this dude was in Breaking Bad as well. I knew I recognised his face from multiple places without knowing who he was.

As always another excellent episode. I really like Mayfeld. I hope we see him again down the line.

Slave 1 interior rotating and the seismic charges was :mrk:

Shoretroopers and Boba’s cleaned up armor

The TPS reports line :funny:

Loved the scene with the officer, Din and Mayfeld at the table. Richard Brake as the officer was awesome. Not only Joe Chill and the Night King but he’s also Doom-Head in 31 and Foxy in 3 From Hell.

Really good episode.

Dug the junkyard and junker droids.

Boba cleaned up. Just lose the skirt.

Looks like Hawaii?

Fett's "let's just say they might recognize my face". Reference to previously doing jobs for the Empire, or to his being the face of the original Stormtroopers?

Oh hai, Pedro.

Cool fight/chase scene with the pirates, and the irony of TIE-Fighters and Stormtroopers coming to the rescue like heroes this time. Kind of ties in with Mayfeld's little speech about how everything isn't so black-and-white and everyone just believes whatever they're raised to believe depending on where they come from.

Best scene was the chat with Richard Brake, who was suitably creepy. Nice little monologue outlining the neo-Imperial mentality, about how "everyone thinks they want freedom, but what they really want is order". Kind of reminded me of the bar scene with Michael Fassbender and August Diehl in Inglourious Basterds. Also liked the more serious side it showed to Mayfeld, how he does have some actual moral convictions and things he cares about.

Also bad-ass message to Gideon at the end and throwing his own little speech back in his face. Also Mando basically admitting he loves Grogu?

Honestly....I've enjoyed every episode to greater or lesser degrees, but this is the first one I wanted to rewatch as soon as it was over.

I also love that this episode basically featured a Bill Burr rant and sort of a Clerks-like deconstruction of Star Wars, but in universe. It could've come off too self-aware, but I think it worked really well. Glad Bill got a moment to shine here.

I think what made it work, fundamentally, is that while Mayfield certainly voiced a lot of stereotypical lines, his demeanor made it very clear that this was a thing he was telling to himself. . . and that him saying it didn't make it true, or even mean that he himself really believed it. Thus the payoff with the officers' mess scene, where the director basically went "Okay, now here is the scene where we make it clear that what Mayfield said earlier was BS, and remind you why the Imperials are the bad guys". It was the opposite of the typical "grimdark deconstructive rant BS", where the character speechifying is a director avatar delivering ex-cathedra "truths".

I think the circumstances were a little different. He had way more time to mull over what he was planning to do to Jyn’s father, plus I think the added guilt of deceiving Jyn about it.

There's also the simple fact that the situations were completely different. Cassian killed that informant in the earlier scene because the *informant* was not capable of escaping. If Cassian didn't shoot him, the dude would have been captured, tortured for information, and then executed. It was a mercy kill. Ruthless, but not exactly villainous.

Ethically, not really the same zone as "Assassinating a dude who you know is a prisoner being forced to work for the Empire". That one is not a million miles away from "Lets poison those wookie slaves, to deny the Empire the fruits of their labor".

Anyone else feel like Mando showing his face to the Imperial scanners will have (unintended) long-term consequences for the character in the future?

Honestly. . . probably not. Gideon at least already seems to have Din's full file, thanks to the Mandalore databanks he looted. The main potential consequence would be if/when he eventually meets up with his own "Children of the Watch" sect, and says truthfully that others have seen his face. My own suspicion is that this will result in less "Outcast! Traitor!" and more "Okay, given your account, here is your assigned penance for your sins". Which is to say, the challenge of the episode will be a test of resolve and faith, to demonstrate that the failure was a legitimate dilemma of facing a contradictory demand of the Way, rather than a loss of will or virtue.
