Chris Hemsworth is Thor

just as Chris Pine is now known as "Kirk from that new Star Trek movie" even though he was almost totally unknown before.

Yeah,...well he's not even that to me.

I guess you can guess which camp I'm in on the new Star Trek movie. Who are these 95% tomatometer approval rate people?

But I'm pleased with this choice for Thor.

Also Christopher Reeves was pretty much an unkown before Superman

Indeed. Superhero movies seem to put people on the map more than the other way around.

The way I see casting is this; You get the actors you think best suited for the roles. If a relative 'unknown' is the best bet for the major roles, you kinda need a 'name' (even if they're not 'A' list) to bring in the non-fans. Especially for a comic book movie. And especially for a character who isn't hugely popular.

People will watch Thor because;
They like Thor *check*
They like comics and comicbook films *check*
They like Fantasy films *check*
They like handsome lead actors *check* (I'm going by my Wife's opinion here)

And then you get a huge number of other people, who do not like the above enough to go watch, but think, "Hey, *insert 'name' here* is in that Thor film. Can't be a load of crap then, let's go watch".

Just my opinion, they are going to need a well-recognised name here... Oh, and while I don't know the whole country I live in, I have quite a lot of friends and a hoooge family, and I've yet to find someone who actually cares who the director is. It's;
1. The actors
2. The genre

Sad but true. Oh wait, I'm the same!!!

I see them throwing a few minor roles to big names. Maybe Portman will actually play Sif (which wouldn't be my preference but isn't really too bad). I could see them casting big for Odin. They seem to like going after big names for the old folks in superhero films (McKellan as Magneto, Stewart as Xavier, Caine as Alfred, Hurt as Ross, Brando as Jor-El).

It suddenly dawned on me that I hadn't acknowledged my quincentennial!!! How unseemly!

So here's some belated celebrations!

yep. Hugh Jackmen. Toby McGuire, even christian bale wasn't that big b4 batman.

In the end the only thing that matters is whether or not the movie is a quality product. If it is well directed and well acted then word of mouth and great reviews will make up for the lack of recognition. I think of Batman Begins as a prime example, it had very little hype considering what it was trying to accomplish, but after the dust cleared and people saw that it was a quality picture it took off.

This is why Im so unsure about Thor, the source material has the potential to be truly epic on screen. Thor is by definition epic. That's why the casting is so important for the roles, you need actors that can pull off the grandiose elements of the story without it coming across as forced and contrived. Which, in my view, would be a deathstroke to the film. This is also why I'm so unsure of Hemsworth, nothing I have seen of him makes me think he can pull this off. Admittedly, Ive only seen a small sample, but this is Thor's coming out party and this movie needs to come through in a big way. If this attempt fails, it will be a very long time before we see him again.

He's an award-winning British stage actor. What could you possibly have seen him in that would make you doubt his chops?

Oh, okay :hehe:

We'll just have to wait and see if Hemsworth can pull it off. He's never really had a lead role before, so there's nothing that we can really judge his acting off of at this point, imo

I just saw Hiddleston in a very small part on the first episode (or movie or whatever you want to call it) of Wallander. I'm looking forward to his performance as Loki now. :up:

I'm going to reserve my judgement until I see him on film, but I gotta say that Hemsworth just doesn't seem noble enough or godlike for Thor. I still say that there were several better choices, but you never know he may WOW us all! *fingers crossed*

Heh heh. Like that makes him infallible or something...

I'm very happy with this choice for Thor. I prefer to have a more "unknown" actor. It doesn't hurt that he's hot, either :o

I don't think anyone thinks it's a bad thing that Thor doesn't have huge stars in it (yet), just a strange thing, and possibly a bit unsettling for the B.O.

I don't think big names are needed for success, only good reviews. Look at Star Trek, the only big name there is the director.

I'm really confident that this movie will be good.

I ahve to say, I like how they are picking a sort of unknown actor (Hemsworth) to paly Thor. The unknowns work well, though, I have to say, just as the others. Robert Downey Jr. played an amazing Tony Stark/Iron Man. He was born to play the role just like the others such as Tobey for Spidey, Christopher Reeve for Superman, etc, IMO.

I have alot of faith in Hemsworth as Thor, and honestly, I think I'm really going to love his performance. :up:
