Another Thomas Harris Series is on the Way with Clarice

Source: TV Guide
May 25, 2012

While NBC is gearing up for a full season of "Hannibal," based on Thomas Harris' famous fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter, Lifetime is now said to be moving forward with their own series based on one of the author's creations. TV Guide reports that the network is developing "Clarice," based on the central protagonist of The Silence of the Lambs, FBI Agent Clarice Starling.

"Clarice," which is wholly separate production from "Hannibal," will focus on a young Starling and her adventures fresh of out the FBI Academy.

Clarice Starling is best known through the portrayal that Jodie Foster gave in 1991's feature adaptation of The Silence of the Lambs. The role was later played by Julianne Moore in Ridley Scott's cinematic followup, Hannibal in 2001.

My thoughts:

1) I guarantee the writers are going to be unable to resist Lecter. He will be in the first season finale, so now the question is, will there be two Hannibal Lecters on TV at the same time?

2) Same question for Jack Crawford. He is an important character to both Starling and Graham. Will he be on both shows played by different actors?

3) Why the hell would the rights holders be so stupid to rent out the rights for two separate and simultaneous projects?

Why do networks do this? They see one network is doing something interesting and they jump on it and copy it but in a different way....so dumb. Plus it's on lifetime so it will suck. She will have an abusive significant other or an abusive father.

The real people to blame are those who control the rights.

Sorry, but what exactly is the point of a Clarice Starling series without Lector?
Lector defines Starling as a character. It's her interactions with him that make her interesting. Without him, there's nothing special about her...

NBCUniversal owns 15% of Lifetime but they probably can't come to a common sense solution and have them exist in the same universe ala all the Law & Orders.

NBC's Hannibal takes place before Red Dragon and Lifetime's Clarice will take place after Silence of the Lambs. Now the pilot hasn't even been filmed yet so Hannibal could be canceled before Clarice even premieres.

This is just Lifetime trying to do an crime show with a semi-built in audience and a blueprint for a character.
Though both networks will want a contemporary setting since the original novels took place in then present day, why not adapt the shows to those times? It would be a departure from all the crime shows that use computers and cell phones to solve crime.

It would be cool if they set Hannibal in 1973 based on the events of the Red Dragon novel's 1980 setting. Then set Clarice in 1983 right after Silence of the Lambs' 1983 setting.

So you have each series go 7 seasons or covering 7 years where Hannibal ends with the events of Red Dragon (novel) and Clarice ends with the events of Hannibal (novel).

Clarice is set in 1993, a year after the events of The Silence of the Lambs. The series is a deep dive into the untold personal story of Clarice Starling, as she returns to the field to pursue serial murderers and sexual predators while navigating the high stakes political world of Washington, D.C

Curious if this will be set in real time after the events Silence of the Lambs. In which case... (unlikely, but I don’t think her career is in such a place that I’d consider it impossible)... maybe Jodie Foster?

It would have to be a helluva script, though.

It's set shortly after the film.

I ignore most of the police procedural shows that come along, including ones based on films, but Clarice Starling makes this more appealing to me than a Training Day follow-up, a Lethal Weapon reboot, etc. The casting for the lead is critical, though.

Bryan Fuller was always so passionate talking about his plans for Clarice. This really is a travesty as given the network and producers involved, I think we can call guess how this is going to pan out.

They kind of made Clarice irrelevant in Hannibal, so eh, whatever. Kurtzman’s involvememt is troublesome though.

Cast Jodie Foster and by Season 6 recast her with Julianne Moore.

This could be really interesting if they do it seriously and don't become an absurd mess like the Hannibal show halfway through. I still shudder at thinking of how I forced myself to watch the entire last season.

She doesn't look much like Foster. I guess it's possible she could get the voice right, since she'd be affecting an American accent, anyway. I don't know. I knew it would be tricky selling me on a new actress playing the character.

Taking account of all the Thomas Harris adaptations (including the TV series): three different actors have played Lecter; three have played Will Graham and two have played Clarice Starling. Also, four actors have played Jack Crawford. So as great as Foster’s performance was (29 years ago), the source material has become a franchise at this point; and no one actor (not even Sir Anthony) can take ownership of a role.

I hope they find a way to use the so-far fringe character of Ardelia Mapp (the African-American woman in the movie, who was Clarice's best friend and the only other female FBI trainee in that class). In the books, Clarice describes her as the second-smartest person she knows (after you know who). That is an interesting character to see working the field.

Since they’re going with actors that look vaguely similar to the original actors, what about Peter Serafinowicz for Hannibal Lector? He has a similar enough look to Hopkins and that polite, dapper British gentleman quality he had, while also playing someone you can actually buy people not initially suspecting as a crazy serial killer.

Also, the man’s done with The Tick. He could use more work.

Yeah, but some of those were reboots, while this is a sequel to the movie. Hannibal was, too, but it sucked and Julianne Moore's Clarice seemed like a completely different character to Jodie Foster's, which probably only reinforced Foster's standing in my eyes and my concern that they get the character "right". Also, it'd be easier to give this the benefit of the doubt if it wasn't on CBS.

None of which is to say that it won't be successful. It's a procedural on CBS, so it may well run for 500 seasons.
