To be fair, none of the movies do a great job explaining the situation in the galaxy. It's long just been sort of nebulous good VS evil. The prequels made the best attempt at it, and many people whined about it.

That's just kind of part of what STAR WARS is, and always has been. And maybe it should move beyond that, and the serial format itself.

Yes, that is the case, but the difference here is that they are for the first time following a story already established by previous films. They are also using a faction of power who's great defeat was the climax of the story that Lucas told. If they just jumped in with something new, like the other trilogies did, there would be less questions asked. Not that more information couldn't have been helpful in the past trilogies as well, of course.

I did like TROS quite a bit more after my 2nd viewing, but I still think I would have preferred Trevorrows version more.

There are still some really dumb things in TROS, especially the way Palpatine is taken out.

I gotta say, the concept art for what could have been Trevorrow’s movie looks all sorts of awesome

This is just...a shame. These images paint the picture of a Star Wars movie. Like, a real one. Even with actual stakes! I mean, R2 dies and 3PO mourns him? That would have wrecked me emotionally! But no, instead we get a fake out Chewie is dead for like 2 mins

Sigh. Just....sigh. I like what we're seeing here like....a lot. But I guess we're stuck with the trash film we got. Thank you Lucasfilm :whatever:

I don't like all of Trevorrow's ideas but some of it feels "right" in ways TROS does not. There appears to be more care taken to give everyone an interesting role. Finn, Rose, Hux all get something to do to start with, but also something that plays to the strengths of their characters. Probably the result of more time, but 'Duel of the Fates' sounds more like an actual movie.

What a bummer.

Seriously, **** JJ, Terio, Kathy, and Disney.

Buying a little time is in itself a very minor feat compared to what Luke is known for. And why would someone have needed to help them? It's not like the Resistance hasn't been escaping the wrath of the First Order time and time again before.

"Buying a little time" is a massive reduction of the event. It saved the last remaining Resistance members, and involved an impossible feat. He basically went full-on-Jesus.
Someone needed to help them because they were trapped and helpless. The film clearly depicts this, and even has them crying out for help to the whole galaxy.

Regarding the First Order soldiers, in what way would they see their boss being humiliated? They probably crapped their pants when Luke survived the barrage, but then their boss chose to go down and face him alone. That's enough to be incredibly impressed with Kylo. And he didn't just face him, Luke vanished after Kylo put his lightsaber into him, so either Kylo defeated him or Luke fled. Even more cred to Kylo.

Luke punked him. Kylo took the bait and engaged in combat with a ghost. By the time he realized Luke wasn't there, the Resistance escaped and he failed his mission to wipe them out. The FO might chalk that up as a win, but they're still talking about it. The story got out.

How do you know that people talk about Elvis for no reason? I guess you feel that it's unlikely and if someone actually did see him that would just drown in the tons of rumors and false testimonies that are going around. Well, it would be the same for Luke. It would just be another rumor in the bunch, and created by some that are really desperate to get people to join their cause.

I know Elvis conspiracies are just that, because we live in the real world where celebrities die.

In the Star Wars universe however, Luke Skywalker is a legendary Jedi master. He is the face of space wizardry, in a world where space wizardry is a real thing.

It should be clear that one of the above is much more likely to be discussed at large than the other. I mean, surely, right? People speculate about ordinary celebrity stories, how much would they talk about actual superheroes?

As for crazy gossip, I would again point to that the tiny Resistance actually blew up Starkiller Base. Something that could actually be seen. Apparently no one gave a crap about that so I don't see why they would get inspired by a rumor about the great Jedi Master getting off his ass to do one small favor to the Resistance, very late in the game, and then he won't help anymore. I'd say that great deeds that other people can actually follow are more inspiring than smaller deeds only space wizards could do.

The entire ST has massive problems with establishing the scope and scale of the First Order. Won't argue that. It appears that even without Starkiller Base they had enough resources to seize control of the galaxy. With no Republic fleet, there was no organized force to oppose them.

Consider the context too. Destroying that weapon wasn't as positive as the Death Star, where the plucky heroes managed to black the eye of the oppressive government. Starkiller was destroyed, but not before it was used to wipe out an entire system and a whole governing body with it. The First Order were a crazy fringe group with a horrible weapon. They were terrorists. Taking out the base was a good thing, but it was like stopping the shooter after the shooting. It still sucks, and there was still chaos and despair.

Trevorrow’s version looks and sounds interesting but I just don’t like the idea of Force Ghost Luke haunting Kylo. It seems that such a cruel act would be beneath a Jedi Master to me.

It never let's Kylo forget his guilt and who he really is and numb himself to it like Vader did. Luke keeps that wound open and at the front of Kylo's mind. Forces him to reexamine himself. Kylo might some day give in to his guilt and remorse.

But he doesn't. In the end of Trevorrow's script, Luke fails and Kylo is "extinguished" unredeemed, ending the Skywalker line in darkness and defeat. I think Luke would never forgive himself for that and might simply allow himself to dissolve into the Force to escape the crushing guilt.

the concept art sure looks a lot better than what we got

Concept art mostly looks more awesome than the movies itself because of the nature of it.
We see those and imagine how it would be, which makes it easier than bringing that stuff really to the screen.

There is a lot of cool stuff for sure, the hux thing for example i really like.
The character had so much potential for a lot of things, ROS ended his story incredible boring.

If that all would have worked in the movie is a different story, but the concept art looks fantastic.

The one of Luke grabbing Kylos blade is amazing.

Jurassic World vs ROS?

I do like the dark costume for Rey which mirrors Luke and Anakin’s in their third parts.

I know it’s petty, but I hated how she wore the exact same white of Force Awakens. Just doesn’t distinguish films. I like the poetry thing of white, grey, black through the thee films of old.

Even if it doesnt work it doesnt make it bad that Luke kept reminding Kylo of what he did and who he is.

And bloodlines and families arent static and they arent any single person. There is good and bad people in all families. Luke Skywalker and his good deeds and heroism dont cease to exist just because Ben Solo or any other relative turned into an awful person.

So i have not chimed in on this yet so here are my thoughts. 1. Interesting that we got not only writing about this but concept art to. I never thought we would get either. 2.The concept art looks amazing. 3.Some of this sounds better then what we got. 4. Some of this i am not sure about. 5. Would this have been better then what we got? Well i dont know. Yeah some of it sounds like it could have based of the ideas but we dont know how those ideas would have been executed.6. All in all its just interesting to think about.

It's hilarious. A few years ago everyone hated Trevorrow and trashed his work. Now fans want to see his version of Star Wars.

Fandom can truly be the worst sometimes. Fans are fickle and don't even know what they want half the time.

Disney and Kathleen Kennedy have made mistakes, but in their defense, dealing with the fickle attitude and nature of fandom is one of the most difficult tasks in creating TV/film entertainment on the planet.

Its why i think there was never a win/win situation for star wars.
For that the fandom is just too big and all.
I dont believe for a second that the sequels ever had the chance of really pleasing people no matter what.
Look at the PT, people for so long wanted to see how it started and all...lucas did that and people were ripping the movies apart.
No matter what the books, comics, shows, games do...people rip it apart.

I dont envy anybody who works on such big franchises because no matter what you do, people will hate you with the passion of 10 burning suns.
Sure they could have done a bit "better", no doubt about it...but i dont believe there would have been a "so much better".

The star wars fandom is just way too big and wide spread for that.

I prefer the days when the fandom had no say. Before social media. Now there are petitions to remove TLJ from canon and we get stuck with TROS.

Some may have trashed Colin Trevorrow work when this all went down, but I was never one of them. I don't really know whether or not at this point he's good or bad. The sample size I have with him is pretty small. Just pointing out, not all of us are doing a massive 180 here. From day one when he was fired and it was announced JJ Abrams was taking over, I was dreading the movie we would have never really get and was wishing we would get the original one. Because I saw this very thing happening
