The Rise of Skywalker Colin Trevorrow No Longer Directing Star Wars Episode IX

Do you think he's a good choice to Direct Episode IX?

I'm kinda indifferent to this news. JW is the only film of his I've seen and I was very 'meh' about it.

Agreed. I didn't like JW. So I'm whatever about the news.

I'm starting to think Kennedy is the problem.

Ding ding ding.

Star Wars is getting watered down from what George had envisioned for films past the original trilogy I feel, but then again he gave us the prequels so...

At the end of the day though, as long as I am entertained its all good. Disney is 50/50 on SW so far, so I'm hoping VIII is back on track after how horrible I found RO.

IMO, Disney should do everything in their power to get Johnson to come back for 9. Push the release date, throw him more money, let him do a re-write on the script, let him do another movie in between, whatever it takes.

The very last thing they should do right now is try to slap something together to hit an arbitrary release date ASAP.

I'm positive that if Lucasfilm wants Rian Johnson back, Kathy needs to let him rewrite the script and properly prep the film -- which means a likely delay to December 2019. I could understand him jumping in headfirst on Episode IX if he loves Jack Thorne's script, but Kathy is crazy if she wants to make that Memorial Day 2019 date with a script she and the director aren't on the same wavelengths on.

I would be surprised if Rian signs on and production continues as planned, but since Trevorrow's departure was in the works since July, she was probably love-bombing him into doing his own treatment for IX.

I don't really understand why so many people want Rian Johnson to direct Episode 9 when we haven't even seen Episode 8 yet. I'd at least wait until the movie comes out to judge whether we want him back.

I hear Zack Snyder is available

Oh gosh no, I'd rather watch a Michael Bay directed Star Wars film.

There is also the possibility that Rian Johmson might want a break after directing episode 8.

Because every indication suggests that VIII will be great. Frankly, Johnson is the best filmmaker they've yet gotten to make a Star Wars film. VIII is the only film that has gone on without any change ups at any level of production. It's clear that Lucasfilm is happy with what he's done.

Can't speak for everyone else but I'm already a fan of his as i love "Brick", "Looper", and "Ozymandias" arguably the greatest breaking bad episode ever made so yeah I'm extra confident in his abilities.

I'm all for them letting TLJ come out and gauging its reception before pulling the trigger on hiring Johnson for 9. That's pretty logical. Personally, I have a lot of trust in him based on his track record and everything I've read about TLJ, but obviously it's still possible for TLJ to end up being a misfire.

However, it is worth mentioning that so far JJ and Rian are the only two directors in the new SW era whose productions went smoothly/weren't fired. And out of those two, it just would make sense for Rian to finish the story, because let's face it- he has a bigger stake in the authorship of this trilogy now as the writer/director of its middle chapter. On that basis he just seems more intimately connected with where the story is going. He should only do it if he feels he has another story to tell though.

Maybe hiring someone because a friend says they remind them of their younger self isn't a good idea.

Rian Johnson has a pretty good track record and that's what fans are basing it on.

I mean...Jurassic World was not good. I think that's why nobody wanted him because we all saw Jurassic World. That being said, just keep Rian Johnson on board to finish the trilogy.

In 2015, there weren't a lot of people saying Jurassic World sucked or questioning the decision of Trevorrow directing this film.

I still don't say JW sucked, it clearly didn't as the BO numbers and pretty good RT score show. It's the only Trevorrow movie I have seen and I like it a lot. So based on that I was excited to see him direct this.

I am sure they will get a good replacement though.

You'd think Trevorrow is as bad as Uwe Ball or McG or John Leonetti on here. Dude only has 3 movies. One indie with a 90% rt rating, another a monster hit. Heck i didn't even think Book of Henry was as bad as people say. Hope he keeps his head up after this.

At least like the whole Trank getting fired thing is justifiable because the dude had a meltdown with Fantastic Four and no big studio wanted to work with him when the writing was on the wall. And Kinberg probably got him fired too.

Trevorrow made one unsuccessful indie movie and suddenly everyone hates him now. It's a little weird. Is the same thing going to happen to Bayona with the Jurassic World sequel if it does well?

Aaah, you had to be THAT guy :woot:

I am in the same boat as you  We are definitely in the minority here on the hype in that regard.

I haven't seen Book of Henry but I love Safety Not Guaranteed and Jurassic World. IX could have done a lot worse than Trevorrow but whatever. Supremely curious about the next filmmaker. I asuume it will be someone with a lot of experience in the industry.

I liked Jurassic World okay, and admittedly haven't seen any of his other films, but Treverrow always seemed like a bit of a step down after they announced Johnson. The whole Book of Henry thing certainly didn't instill confidence, and I've had a sneaking suspicion for a while now that he wasn't going to end up directing IX.

I do think the hate for JW is a bit overblown though. Did it have dumb stuff in it and shameless nostalgia-milking moments? Sure, but there was some fun to be had with it. Definitely not the worst movie I've ever seen, just may be a bit of a discrepancy between how successful the movie was and how good it actually was.

Nevertheless, I've always hoped for Johnson to get a chance to see the trilogy through if something like this happened, so fingers crossed.

i haven't still seen JW but after resurrecting that franchise easy to see why
Kennedy would think he would be good choice.

Their best bet would be to get johnson to do episode IX but it's clear lucasfilm under her has a problem. The last jedi so far is only film since disney bought it that seemed to be done drama free.

I never undestood why people would hate on Trevorrow.

she is.as well as the model of releasing a star wars film every year.

i am in minority here is that i love all of lucas star war wars films.

i saw video where it was speculting disney is taking star wars away from light and dark side that was lucas vision to now also have grey area.

if lucas had done cgi resurrection of tarkin and put 1977 carrie fisher on another actress he would have been crucified online

I would really hate if the rumors on episode VIII i heard are true just in case
of rey being reincation of anakin or kylo ren being the end of skywalker line

Best not to worry too much about rumors.
