Countdown: New Weekly Series

Every week, I skim through "Countdown" in the shops. That way, I pick up any major earth-shaking plot twists (still waiting for one to happen), but at the same time, I don't have to waste my money on it. Seems like a real letdown.
 
Holy God almighty, I didn't think I could dislike the Jason-Kyle-Bob-Donna story more, but the addition of the Jokester makes me cry :csad:

Oh fck to the no, I haven't been buying any of this ****eage. I stopped after issue 45 or so (lulz with the backwards numberzes) around the time of Bart's funeral. I still read it though, either in the shop or "elsewhere."

I have no problems not buying Kyle's run in this. It's not like every issue of everything that Kyle's ever been in is really that good (

). Besides, it seems like his story is going to be covered in a whole lot more depth in Marz's "Search for Ray Palmer," which has been markedly better than the main Countdown title.
 
I don't really have anything to say about Countdown, just figured I'd come and scoop the "last post" spot.

I don't think it's so bad, not as bad as "****eage." I mean, the first month or so were actually interesting. If anything, I think it's a credit to how inherently interesting Countdown could be if they'd just get the pacing right. For example-- I'm very interested in the Mary Marvel story. I disagree with half of the writing but it's still a story I think would be good to tell (I'm new to her but I'm already hoping for her to return to the side of good).

I'd like to know more about Darkseid as well. There is a lot of potential there-- even if you keep the current scripts the same, I bet countdown would be more interesting if they just used the cut and paste function more.

I think most people were interested in the concept. I really liked it. But this has been worse than an @ssraping by the neighbor's german shepard. None of the stories have had the payoff in the book. It's constantly made you buy something else to find out what the hell happened. And bad writing combined with awful tie-ins have sucked all joy from this. I almost blanketly refuse to buy anything with a countdown tie-in label because of it.

As a big Shazam fan (the whole family) I dispise this whiney do nothing Mary Marvel. Read some earlier stuff if you want a good Mary Marvel story.

I'd like to see more Darkseid too, especially if he actually does something waiting for this big disaster seems to be the point of countdown. I'm a quite a bit worried about this death of the new gods thing. Kirby was a genius and great creator and I'm wondering just how badly DC is gonna mess that entire world up. It all ties in, but if nothing that's tying in is interesting then the payoff cannot possibly not suck.
 
This week wasn't too bad. It was interesting with Jason Todd meeting the Jason Todd on Earth 15, who by a twist of fate was Batman on that Earth. It was nothing earth shattering this week but the intensity levels of each story has gained. Trickster/Piper continues to be my favorite sub-plot with the "Search for Ray Palmer" now coming in a close second. Not that the rest of the stories aren't good, it's just that they aren't hitting home with me.

However, it was a nice bonus with the Origin of General Zod and the Gary Frank artwork. Beautiful. I can't wait to see him on Action Comics. I am not a fan of Superman but I will be buying that book for the Geoff Johns story and the Gary Frank artwork. NICE!

I assume you've read Rising Stars and Midnight Nation? Also, Franks art was a little too rough in the Origni story for my taste. I'm not saying it is because he was sloppy or anything, I think he is going for a somewhat different style I'm not entirely into. I like Geoff Johns, but I'm going to have to wait on the trades for his Action Comic runs, I want to read reviews for it, as I really don't care for Superman.

Don't know if anyone has checked out the Newsarama "Counting Down" section yet. They've got some new Countdown 29 info and are talking up Countdown 30...

Anyone care to weigh in on Mary Marvel? I mean, she's met Eclipso, so she has to do something bad, but it is still hard for to take (she was just so nice earlier). I guess their a few months left for her to see the light but I hope she wakes up soon and goes back to the side of good. Also, at least she is in the issue. With the way countdown is going, I bet that is the Mary Marvel story for Countdown! I think I've been sucked back into the series.
 
It's really too bad Mary Marvel wasn't one of those magical heroes who were around during "Day of Vengeance" and knows just how dangerous Eclipso can be, what with her seducing the Wrath of God into almost slaughtering everyone with a drop of magic in them. Oh, wait, she was.

Well, then, it's really too bad Mary wasn't one of Sue Dibny's best friends and attended her funeral along with every single other person in the DCU; if she was, she might've known that Jean Loring is a complete and raging psychopath who murdered her friend in a fit of mania. Oh, wait, she did that too.

Well, then, I guess it's too bad that people like Zatanna and Billy Batson weren't around just a few months back when Black Adam went crazy and went around killing everyone; if they were, maybe they'd realize just how dangerous Mary Marvel is right now what with her holding Black Adam's power and showing signs of violence beyond even his mindset and actually do something about it instead of hanging around in a big rock watching Veronica Mars or at Black Canary's bachelorette party getting sht-faced. Especially considering that she's Billy's sister and everything and he just left her to stew in a coma.

Oh, wait, they were.

So I guess the grand point of this story is that Mary is simply mind-controlled by shtty magic, since she's clearly not acting anything resembling how any sane person would logically act in her situation, and that everyone around her is too much of a dumbass to see it. Which, hey, sounds exactly like the plot of Amazons Attack, the quality of which this book is rapidly approaching.
 
So how long does that make it that DC lasted before they lost track of the multi-verse? A year?

Yeah, I am with you in that way. I mean, I think it's one of those things where it really isn't Mary Marvel at all, or it's a situation where you've got the smallest part of her personality taking control of her via Eclipso's influence. I mean, drowning cattle is a very petty thing. And while it's base I don't know if it's evil.

Of course she had to do something like that. I mean, she's only just now met Eclipso, just like Jean would later turn good but she had to destroy a sun (and as a result a few billion people). I hope Mary comes out of it, but what would make her not coming out of it (either dying or remaining a villain) so bad is that her decent would just be marred by such editorial stupidity as you said in your post. I mean, yeah she is being controlled and yeah, it may be that she can't see clearly, but once she saw Eclipso she should've been like "oh now I see what's going on." I mean, when Zatanna kicked her out she remarked (I think) "I'm not myself or that's not really me" but Zatanna wasn't hearing her.

But that's the problem, I think you can make a story about her turning evil or even being seduced, but pacing issues aside, everything about the descent is weak and easily avoidable if DC was into making sense.

DC is good at mining its universes when it comes time for characters to pop out of portals and go to different time-periods (I mean that both sarcastically and truthfully). But when it is time to mine the universe to make sure the story makes even the least bit of sense, they just don't want to do it.

I'll still read it because I want to know about MM though. Oh well.
 
Oh no, my computer or hyped freaked out as I was making another post. Long story short-- Bedard said two things that were interesting. He said that Mary Marvel's will connect with the Athenian Women's shelter story, and that for most all the stories, someone else (from another story) will end up being the key for that story.

McKeever also refused to say whether Granny Goodness was working with Darkseid, but said a reveal was coming in issue 21. Interesting huh? I think Mary Marvel will be a chess piece in Apokalypse politics (can someone say civil war?).

I'm thinking about MM being taken to Paradise Island. I mean, Granny Goodness already controls it (more or less), so I don't think MM would be there for war. I know Paradise Island is a popular place for good girls turned bad or "misguided" to be rehabilitated (like with Supergirl).

I guess we'll just have to keep buying Countdown faithfully, showing our support for everything DC does in it's great wisdom like the good little comic readers we are.

You know, seeing it spelled out like that makes me realize how stupid it is. Countdown is dropped for me as of next week. :up:
 
I stopped at 33. When the series ends, I'll be up about a hundred bucks :up:
 
You should do something hilarious, like renaming one of the characters something crazy, like Phil! OMG hahaha!
