Darkman Appreciation Thread

The first one was a true classic, my first favourite comic book movie, I somehow saw it before Batman!

I loved the first one. It was so fun and action packed and up to that point I never really seen anything like it. It was a creative idea and I loved it. I loved it so much that I bought the other two films... holy crap, what were they thinking. First off, Vosloo looks nothing like Niesen. Second off, the film felt lazy because they totally just ripped off scenes from their own films and pasted them in the film but with different VO. Third, why the hell did they bring Durant back?! I thought he was an awesome villain who in my opinion died one of the best deaths I mean that helicopter scene was pure genius and was awesome to the core, but bringing him back to life was the stupidist excuse I ever heard of in my entire life. I like Darkman III: Die Darkman, Die because they actually had a bit of a love story and more choices for Westlake to make like will he give the little girl the skin formula or use it for himself to have his face back the way it was? I really did like that factor and that bad guy was just intense and super-crazy all the way and I loved it. I really would like to see a remake of this film as long as they're still respectful to the first film, if they're going to make it just for the money or are just going to make it suck hard then, don't bother.

Darkman II and III just don't count as sequels to me. I alway see DTV sequels as "TV rip-offs" of movies. So, to this day, I dream of a real Darkman sequel.

Agreed.

It wasn't based off a comic-book, was it?

Nope.

If you liked the movie should try to hunt the 5 paperbacks books of them, worth the read I say

Darkman was good. The Special effects sucked though and I'm not a fan of Raimis cheesey melodramatic dialogue he uses from time to time.

Half the point is the cheesy Melodramatic dialogue!! It's meant to be your classic pulp adventure type of story where the villains do speak and do things in a very melodramatic fashion, and a lot of basic logic is forgone. I love how there's no explanation for all of his equipment still being as functional as it was before Durant blew his lab to smithereens! That's always a good one. :woot:

I watched both Darkman and Spider-Man last night and I noticed that the two however very different are still very simular. If you have both movies then I suggest that you try it out for yourself to make connections between the two films(although Darkman's final showdown was more awesome in my opinion even though that guy who was shooting him with that gun-thing had a horrible shot even though he was like right in front of him, but still, good stuff). I noticed that both movies had one scene in particular that was ideal to one another and that was the scene where in Spider-Man; Peter was trying to come up with suit ideas for the wrestling challenge and in Darkman; Westlake was trying to perfect the liquid skin in the burned down laboratory. If you have both films like I said then you should go check out those scenes.

Well I think the 1994 baldwin Shadow movie and the disney rocketeer movies where good pulp adaptations. They didn't use as much camp and cheese as Darkman did. I thought the same of the spiderman films as well. That kind of stuff isn't my thing. I prefer more modern realistic dialogue in films.

I think they are more different than similar. Darkman is classic Raimi. If you love the Evil Dead trilogy then you'll love Darkman. Spider-Man is Raimi being more mature and trying to appeal to a mass audience. As much as I enjoyed Raimi's Spidey trilogy I can't wait till he returns to his classic style.

I appreciate both approaches. I enjoy a down to Earth, dark, and gritty comic movie but I also enjoy a fun over the top one. I guess I'm just open minded that way.

Yeah I know, but when I noticed that I thought that Raimi was just paying homage to his own movie's because the writing on the paper's the same(upper-cased, bolded lettering), all sorts of objects that have to do with the scenario float along by the screen, etc. Just fun little things I like to point out whenever watching movies which are superior to others; did the same with Shaun of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead.

I like Darkman and I like fun comic book movies like Hellboy. I just thought it was a little over cheesey in some places. It worked well in Raimis evil dead films but seemed a bit grating in this movie.

Shoot, Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2 is essentially Darkman. The destroyed lab, the escape from the hospital (with some classic Raimi camera shots), him seeking refuge to complete his life's work, etc.

It MAY have worked better in Evil Dead cause those movies were just silly. In Darkman he attempted some dramatic stuff. But I think the dramatic scenes work cause they pay homage to the classic Universal monster movies.

The second and the third one were utter CRAP, but the first one is truly an underrated movie.
How could you not love a face like this?

I haven't seen this movie in a few years, but I do remember liking it and since I saw it for the first time after I saw the Spider-Man movies, it was cool to see some of Raimi's old tricks being used in this film.

I saw the new Blu-ray art and while I'm excited for the new transfer I think they should of stuck with the original poster art, as awesome as that new custom art is.

Darkman ll and Darkman lll are available on netflix instant for anyone who needs to satiate their morbid curiosity.

I kind of wish raimi would give the evil dead a rest and make another darkman movie. It would be easy to sell. "hey, the guy who made those enormously successful spiderman movies wants to make another superhero movie." it would be easy to market as well, especially if they got Neeson back.
