Casting is always a tricky business, you dont know who's going to work and who isnt but Jackman, MaCavoy, Fassbender, McKellen and Stewart have worked out perfectly for them, Lawrence blowing up like she did is another lucky happening.

I think its not that hard, as long as the studio takes care of the lead actor on the actual movie. Then its up to the actor to choose the right roles right after, and there's where the luck comes into play.

If your lead is already known, the superhero movie will just increase his popularity, but if your lead is young or unknown, then he must be really good to blow up and get great roles years after. Talent is important, really important.

I will concede every X-Men have characters who clutter the film only to fill in the background. But I wouldn't say the Avengers are immune to that (right, Hawkeye?).

I would also say that the main characters of at least the Singer and Vaughn X-Men movies are far better drawn or more nuanced than what Marvel has done. Intentionally so. The depth with which McAvoy and Fassbender's Xavier and Magneto are explored in FC and DOFP or Wolverine is in the first two Singer movies is much more thoughtful (not necessarily a good thing to audiences) than say Thor, Captain America, Black, Widow, Hawkeye, etc.

With that said, they also clutter every film with do-nothings like Angel (ether version), Storm (all films), even Blink, Bishop, and Colossus in DOFP.

So, it is a give and take. I think for the characters the X-franchise has zeroed on, there is a lot of depth there. But there are a lot of background fillers that Marvel avoids in the larger sense.

I disagree that Wolverine is more thoughtful or interesting than MCU's Captain America. Wolverine has a personal identity crisis due to memory loss but the identity crisis Captain America has reflects the moral conflict of the entire United States.

I just do not really see it. I mean the concept is there, but the movie also treads very lightly around it, lest the concept of superheroes or Cap and SHIELD are called into too much question. It ends up with the magical ban-aid of "Hydra did it," and no critical soul searching need be applied. I felt like Wolverine growing from loner and survivor to someone who can let go of the shrouded past in favor of saving the X-Men was more of an arc than Steve Rogers had in three movies. He is always Erskine's(s?) "good man." Nick Fury had more depth to me in The Winter Soldier between the two.

Nikki Finke ‏@NikkiFinke 24s
Weekend Box Office: Huge #1 'X-Men: Future Past' (Fox-3996) opens with $90M FSS & $107M Mem Wkd. A Cscore.
Damn, I was right on the money. Although Nikki being Nikki and all, I'd wait until Rth chimes in with more reliable numbers.

Hmm that's good but I'm guessing we probably at this point won't have an X-Men movie breaking TLS opening weeked, at least not anytime soon.

You know what....lets wait for the summer to finish before debating if DOFP OW is disappointing or not.

For all that we know..... TWS could be the highest grossing movie this summer :woot:

I get people comparing the OW numbers to X3 because thats the last film where the OT cast are featured. But given the opening weekend/over-all gross of Origins, First Class and The Wolverine. 90 million is not bad. Days of Future Past will easily outgross those films and X1 and hopefully outgross X3 too.

You know it's less than X3 and that didn't have the help of 3d prices but it is a start back in the right direction. People have seen this dark 'Civil Rights' type theme many times already with the X-Men, however with Apocalypse we switch to a 'survival of the fittest' theme with potentially more fun action/visual eye candy that will draw even more people back to the franchise. Also to many non-comic book fans the x-men are Cyclops, Jean, Wolverine, and Storm and if they aren't playing a huge role in the film they aren't interested. Their inclusion, along with the ever popular Gambit, in the next film may just be what brings back many lost viewers.

Man, can this franchise ever stop being typical with its BO performances? :(

I guess you COULD argue that TLS dropped -29.1% Saturday.

Hopefully this is the end of it or at least they could do less of that in the future films. Anyway, if this is the end of the Civil Rights theme then they did a great job closing it.

Well, unfortunately Rth doesn't have any better news: 29.5 million for Saturday. It seems the 90 million 3 day OW streak continues.

On the bright side, if I'm reading correctly, this has made around 160,290,000 yuan in China for the first 2 days, which is about USD$25.7 million. Looks like this is gonna be a big hit worldwide. :)

$UCCE$$!

The Wolverine earned 40 million in its entire run in China.

I hope this makes at least 700 million. It deserves it.

But yea, i also hope we don't see the bigotry/civil rights allegories again. There is more to the X-Men than that. I don't want to see it used as a crutch any more.

The Wolverine earned $18,170,000 in its first week.

So DOFP's China gross in 2 days is massive compare to TW's 1st 7 day run.

Cap 2's opening weekend seems to be around 38million USD, which could be exceeded by X-Men if the trend continues, considering it earned like 14.7 million the second day, an increase over the first.

Also, this seems to have earned 9.4 million in South Korea after Saturday, compared to ASM2's 9.6 million, and TWS' 7.9 million after their Saturdays. (Films in Korea seem to be released on Wednesdays according to their box office charts http://www.kobis.or.kr/kobis/busine...-24&sMultiMovieYn=&sRepNationCd=&sWideAreaCd=)

Boxofficemojo's numbers may be different though.

I wonder if it is a smash in China then Blink might reappear in Apocalypse??

With Apocalypse being the villain I highly doubt it.

Im worried about Sunday numbers. What if it does less than 90m?
no way Godzilla deserves more money when XMen has the biggest cast of not only this year, but the best one of last decade.

Jesus...............$100M is a lock in china. I cannot see how this movie will gross less than $700M.

What other allegories should be explored in your opinion?

I think 700 million isn't likely now. A 107 million 4 day weekend says It will do 220 to 230
million domesticly less than the unadjusted take for the last stand. We are problly looking at 300 to 400 Million overseas with at best would bring it to 630 Million worldwide.

Fox may not want to spend another 200 Million on Apocalypse so I won't be shocked if it's budget Is closer to the 160 million Fox spent on First Class.

Acording to most Chinese moviegoers,it'd better not. Chinese moviegoers don't like the actress,They prefer Mariko.
