So I'm guessing probably a $250 M domestic run. Can some one of our more knowledgeable posters illuminate what DoFP's foreign opening means for the film? What can we expect for a final international tally based on it? $400 M? $500 M?

Im seriously confused. So are people thinking this film is only going to make about 500 now? is that good or bad. I am so horrific with this stuff it is embarassing

When I said $400-500 M foreign, that would be on top of $200-250 M domestic, meaning a worldwide total between $600-750 M.

Oh yeah sorry I hadnt even realised you said that. That is good for the total then :D (I assume) haha

But I think what that article is saying that factoring the staggered release dates and taking into account all the territories, DOFP still made more than CATWS.
Yes, it is a direct comparison of the openings in those specific territories.

I think $450-500M foreign sounds about right.

Well all I know is that the WOM that has surrounded this film even with the GA could mean apoc is going to be a huge film. I honestly do. I have people all over my facebook and twitter praising this film that I would never have imagined to be fans. tis a good day to be an x-men fan

Define huge. I think it has the potential to do much better then DoFP, but I don't suddenly think it is going to be pull TDK or IM3 numbers.

I was going to say a billion but then realised I was crazy but I do think closer around 800/850, maybe even pushing 900 if they sell it as bigger than DOFP. I honestly feel the GA would get behind it. The only thing is that it will be against some huge films that year.

:(

I'll believe it when I see it. This supposed good word of mouth has always been with the franchise as far back as 2000's X-men as the first 2 movies specifically were blessed with tremendous reviews.

Unfortunately this franchise has been cursed with bad legs.

You know, I am thinking now that the franchise could actually get some legs to start with based on the fact all the CBMs are finally doing their own thing and being accepted for that. DOFP seemed to prove to a lot of people that X-Men is okay being the tone that it is compared to ASM, TWS and even the rest of the MCU and DCU. I think with people wanting something different moreso now than back in the x1 to 3 days it should help this franchise more than the rest.

I could be wayyy wrong but I think it should do well.

The thing is, I have no idea why the series has been front loaded. It made sense with X3 and Origins, but outside of that you'd expect better legs. Perhaps the X-Men just aren't as popular as you'd think.

I like a prediction of $800-900m if the next film is as well received as this one.

Always thought the big bucks would come around Apocalypse. They needed this flick to grab the larger audience back and they seemed to do that. I think we will see a similar pattern like we did with X1,2 and 3 box office wise with FC, DOFP and X-Men:Apocalypse. This will be their new X2.

As for having legs, it's tough with this crowded summer. Without a full reboot its gotta be even more difficult to grab a new audience this far in. This stuff will take time to rebuild and grab new viewers. Thought everyone expected a heavy drop tbh.

Nikki Finke says $110m for the 4 day weekend. I think Fox should be happy with that; not every movie can gross a billion dollars. That's just unrealistic.

Given that the last 2 X-Men movies were the top 2 least grossing X-films in the U.S. They didn't earn 150 million in the U.S. 110 million for DOFP in 4 days is not bad. Its not like DOFP's lead in movie is X2. And Of course DOFP has a bigger budget compare to TW/FC but the foreign gross will make up for that. The question is could they maintain this momentum for the next X-Men movie?

Does anyone really see Age of Apocalypse doing as well as DOFP or even better?

I think what got everyone so excited about this film was that it was sort of a reunion of the original trilogy cast and of course combined with the new guys. The marketing definitely over-played the presence of the older cast.

From what i understand AoA will be pretty much just the first class cast in it and some newer mutants, with the possibility of wolverine showing up again. I don't know if that would have the same draw?

It is not bad at all, it just isn't great. What is great news is the OS numbers. Those are legit.

I think it very well could, as it would be playing off the goodwill of DoFP.

The scope ("disaster film")
The draws (Lawrence, Jackman Tatum)
The character (Cyclops, Jean, Storm, Gambit, Apocalypse)
The hype/goodwill (Apocalypse will be coming off the same type of anticipation X2 had for TLS)

I just read an interview with Kinberg saying some of the OT cast will probably be back. It's gonna have more well known characters then this one with a larger scale.

Plus people dug this flick, which leads me to believe the next one will grab an even larger audience just based on that.

Edit: He said certain OT characters will be back.

Is the sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse, going to just feature the younger generation of characters?

It will focus primarily on the First Class cast, but it will certainly have some of the original cast involved, too.

Maybe maybe.

I don't know if it will be in the same position as TLS after X2 though? X2 was sort of the franchise peak and TLS benefited from that and there being no past baggage attached, so the room for growth seemed unlimited at the time.

While DOFP has done a good job of dealing with the baggage of the past, I'm just not sure there's that much more room for new fan growth?

I don't know really. If its true that only few of the OT cast members will comeback, then people will not have this reunion feeling/nostalgia factor that would make them watch the movie. Apocalypse could look like FC cast + Wolverine again but minus the OT cast. I wouldn't be surprised if Apocalypse gets lower opening weekend numbers than DOFP.

The 3 day total is a tad disappointing, or is it just me? Was expecting the 3 day total to at least surpass TASM 2 with the good reviews, but, the X-Men franchise has never really been what you call 'huge' either.

Hope it has better legs than the previous movies though, this deserves to make a LOT of money it was such a good film.

General question: Why do people talk about domestic numbers?

Seems a general consensus that Films make "more" from each dollar earned in the US compared to Overseas where they get a lesser cut of the income, ie

$100 Dollars made in US makes Producers say $60 where as in Overseas they would only get say $30.

Thats just a very broad example not actual figures.

Considering the last 2 films didn't get $60 million in the opening weekend, 90 million is hardly a failure. Do people really think this X-Men film will get a really big boost after First Class (a prequel) and The Wolverine (a spin-off)? Maybe if we had an OT cast film first before this, then this would have performed so huge but no.
