DC Relaunching Everything? - Part 2

Nothing in any of the solicitations has been too out of the ordinary, to be honest. All of the relaunch talk about things being "fresh" and "groundbreaking" and "milestones" is stuff we hear in solicitations every single month anyway. S'part of why I'm indifferent to most of it. The only things that genuinely interest me are the few things that seem to live up to that--Morrison doing his thing with the world's biggest icon, Cornell taking a stab at another perspective on Arthurian legend, etc.

I don't think I'd want everything to be ground breaking though.

I mean, mainly, I'd want the Batbooks and GL books to stay on course. They've both been pretty consistently solid for a few years now.

The important thing about this relaunch for me is that DC actually got some better talent on their main titles. I'd take Morrison and Perez over Cornell (no offense, but Morrison's better) and JMS, Azz over JMS, Johns over Robinson, etc. any day.

The other main component I like is the expanded role of really good writers like Synder, Cornell and Lemire on DC's books. Swamp Thing, Frankenstein, Animal, etc. all have a chance to make for some fresh new stories...which DC has kind of been running low on recently (REBELs and Thunder Agents being two exceptions).

So I'd say there's a lot of - maybe not big - but good change in that sense. For the most part, it appears as though they've been a bit more careful in choosing quality writers for their books.

It's just a shame that a lot of that good change has to be overshadowed by the handful of missteps DC has also made - bringing in Liefield, Teen Titans, etc.

I wouldn't either. Frankly, this line-wide relaunch as a whole is entirely too groundbreaking for my tastes. I'm just saying that by the language employed, you probably couldn't tell DC's September relaunch solicitations from any other month's solicitations if all the shiny #1's weren't there alongside them. Every single month, all of the publishers effectively trip over themselves to try and make every single one of their comics sound important and groundbreaking.

Oh, and DC made a huge mistake by having the JLA title play second fiddle to all of the other books in the universe. So what always ended up happening was the JLA writers would always have to truncate and rework stories to fit into what ever event was going on at the time... That's why even really good writers (such as the late Dwayne McDuffie) couldn't turn out good stories in JLA.

Even if you're not all that crazy about Johns, with him writing, it's guaranteed that JLA will play a key part in the major events of the DCU...which at least opens the possibility of great stories being told.

It's been confirmed that Chris Burnham will be working with Morrison to conclude his run on Batman. Personally, I'm thinking it'll be the new Batman Beyond book.

If that's the case then there better be a better writer.

I like how Jim Lee says there's never been a good origin story for the JLA. He might as well go piss on Gardner Fox's grave while he's at it.

Waid's story was an attempt to integrate the early JLA issues with the Post-Crisis world. Although I of course didn't accept or like that continuity, Waid did a really good job with it. It's important to note that he had Barry as the Chairman. If you ever read the early JLA issues, you can tell that Flash was the defacto leader and forming a team was his idea, as was the name, which of course came from the JSA. Barry Allen was a tip of the hat to early comics fandom, Jerry Bails and Roy Thomas in particular. Barry represents us.

I doubt this relaunch will be all that groundbreaking but a lot of the new comics we are getting sound good

Batwoman and Stormwatch and Justice League DARK all look like they are going to be epicly epic

And Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey look really neat

I can't get over how awful those Teen Titan designs are. I think Superboy might actually have the worst superhero costume of all time.

I read the solicts, and they sound like he'll be finding the scarab for the 1st time all over again. Since the solicts state he has to learn to take the dangerous scarab and use it for good instead of destrcution, which in the old DCverse he already did...
