I don't think he was a Psycho in the early seasons. I think he is just socially ******ed. For whatever reason he has trouble connecting to people socially. Could be, because since he was at least 9. Harry has treated him like an alien.
He basically got off on killing people, and the ritual of doing so. That's a level beyond social ******ation; that's pure psycho.
I don't remember specifically what happened with Deb, but I do recall his main reason for saving her was that he was 'fond of her'. That's a big step from where we are now.He has always shown that he cares about people. At the end of the 1st season when Brian took Deb. He lost his mind. That is something a Psychopath would not have felt. He seemed torn up about killing his brother as well.
And I think Brian's situation is different. Basically, he was the first person to understand Dexter. I think even the most emotionally dead person would have stirred emotions about that.
I honestly think you're looking way too deep into this really. I would find it pretty stupid if Vogel tries to claim she created Dexter as some kind of experimental solider or whatever when she'd never even met him directly. If anything, I think she might be experimenting on him now.The Shipping container incident certainly damaged him, but I think Harry damaged him more by just assuming he was a Psycho.
I think Vogel just wanted an experiment that was young enough to mold. I think Hitler said something like give me a child, & I will give you a soldier. Something like that anyway.
