Horror Dexter - Part 6

I have seen the finale now. I can see where people would say this is rushed and it COULD have been stretched out by like, 3 episodes for the finale portion alone. But doing it this way DID make it more high octane and suspenseful. So I can see why it was done this way. This ending felt a lot more appropriate than Season 8. I rather enjoyed this season

It's funny how Angela spent 25 years on the missing persons case, but only took a week or so to solve the Bay Harbor Butcher case. Yes, the same case that had every law enforcement entity involved from the FBI to state and local authorities.

Also, it's a shame the writers had to hurry up and make us stop "rooting" for Dexter with the Officer Logan death. I get it, Dexter became unhinged and lost his way, but why not show a build up to that over a couple episodes?

I just binged the entire season and finished it today. It was a marked improvement over some of the past seasons, particularly the latter half and was my second most preferred way for the series to properly end.

There were a few issues definitely, like the pacing of the last episode but overall it was good. I think it could have been better but there really were only two ways to end the series and they chose this one, which went a long way to redeem that awful lumberjack finale.

Although I am somewhat disappointed that this is a definitive ending to Dexter, considering it really brought him back from that horrible season 8, I was satisfied with the conclusion.

I totally agree on the rush to kill him in the last 30 minutes reduced the effect. Killing Logan was Dexter's most unredeeming murder and it immediately felt wrong to kill off such a good guy but with that it put an end to Dexter's run. Harrison would not let that go unpunished.

Batista and Dexter not getting to have one final meeting was another major disappointment. I don't know how COVID affected the season but it feels like that might have originally been the intent. The set up there was just too good to pass up and yet they passed it.

Also agree that an epilogue would have done wonders for Dexter's legacy.

Dexter Franchise Won’t End With New Blood

As part of a wide-ranging conversation with THR, Paramount executive David Nevins addresses the future of Dexter directly. New Blood was a big draw for Showtime, which is owned by Paramount Media Networks, and Nevins is asked about the brands and franchises he'd be interested in developing further. In his response, excerpted below, the executive hints that more Dexter could be on the way:

There are a lot of things that I am working on. I don’t want to mention things until they are ready. There are a lot of things. What is the future the Dexter franchise? I am actively working on that.

Huh. Curious where they go with this. :)

Harrison probably. Then it gets cancelled after one season because nobody cares...
plus Dexter's sacrifice would be for nothing
should've gone with a different ending if they wanted to continue the story.

Or maybe a "young Dexter" prequel.

They would need to either have Dexter be Harrison's ghost that way Hall can still be involved. Not much interest if Hall is not involved, I would even take him narrating his prequel in a life flashing before eyes way the moment he dies. The Dexter inner monologue is something only he can do.

Cameron Monaghan from Shameless on@Showtime would be perfect for a Dexter prequel.

I don't really have any interest in a "Young Dexter" prequel to the original series, set in the universe. We already saw and heard so much about this Dexter's early trials and tribulations. Doesn't seem like the series would tread any new ground.

At this point, I'd prefer a full Dexter reboot and an entirely new iteration of the character. New showrunner, new tone, different vibe, more serious, more serialized with less of the "case of the week" procedural aspect. Do something fresh and edgy with the property.

I could live with this. Case of the week shows bore me now. :(

Dexter, Billions Spinoffs in the Works at Showtime – The Hollywood Reporter

for Dexter, McCarthy has ordered a prequel series that will tell the origin story of Michael C. Hall’s serial killer drama that first bowed on Showtime in 2006 and was part of a wave of anti-heroes that captivated viewers. Showtime revived Dexter with a sequel series, New Blood, that helped repair the legacy of the series after its original finale was widely considered one of the worst in television history. New Blood went on to become a ratings and streaming success for Showtime. Also as part of the larger plan to lean into the Dexter franchise, Showtime is also exploring other spinoffs that trace the back stories of some of the show’s most iconic characters. This includes John Lithgow’s memorable Trinity Killer. Dexter creator Clyde Phillips, who was behind New Blood and served as showrunner on the first four seasons (which included the Trinity one), will oversee the franchise for Showtime.

I don’t know how I feel about this. New Blood started off promising but the ending left me apathetic toward the franchise as a whole. Not really excited about the prequel or this Trinity spinoff.

I think most of us probably feel this way. I don't expect these to get far.

Showtime Eyeing ‘Dexter’ Prequel Series About Trinity Killer – Deadline

The other two projects include Dexter: Origins and the next chapter of Dexter: New Blood. Origins will focus on young Dexter Morgan (originally played by Michael C. Hall) at the outset of his transition into the avenging serial killer he would become. Set in Miami, the series will begin as Dexter graduates college to join Miami Metro, where he meets younger versions of many of the characters we came to know in the OG series. Dexter’s family will also be portrayed, including a very-much-alive Harry (originally played by James Remar) and a very formidable, teenage Deb (originally played by Jennifer Carpenter). There is not mention as to whether Remar would reprise the role.

A new season of New Blood will explore the kinds of themes and scenarios seen in the original series but through a new lens. Although not confirmed, based on the Season 1 finale, the new lens provided would be from Dexter’s grown-up son Harrison (Jack Alcott).

Same, but I do think it may be a better way to go than a prequel with Dexter himself.

Dexter: New Blood Might Not Be Cancelled Forever

Wall Street Journal has reported on the cancellation of Dexter: New Blood, which also accompanies the news that Showtime will be pursuing a Dexter prequel show. Despite the contentious ending of Dexter: New Blood, McCarthy has made it known that the show has a future which will one day be explored - unsurprising given its major success in viewership - but that the network would first like to explore the "core 'Dexter' story in hopes of getting new fans on board."
