Amy Gumenick actually auditioned for the role of Laurel Lance.

“I've since then auditioned for various other guest stars and recurring [roles] here and there, but the one didn't hit,” she continued. “But [Rapaport] is a loyal and an amazingly down to earth person who really believes in his actors. So, I would go in and do my thing and trust that if the right role was there it would happen.”

And I honestly thought it was common knowledge that she would eventually take up the mantle.

Of course. But it's not like it was impossible to change. Especially after they introduced a badass Canary, and ruined Laurel for two whole seasons. Heck, Jimmy Olsen in Smallville wasn't even the real fricking Jimmy.

Really. Though it was kinda stupid. But it serves as an example that anything's possible.

Regarding Laurel, I figured that they were going to do this redemption story with her when they put her through that downward spiral in season 2.
I really hope they prove people wrong. I think she has potential

Campea just told Amell last week that he was going to give Laurel a chance. Personally I don't like Laurel due to the actress, but I find it easy enough to compartmentalize her part in the show and not let it spoil the rest.

Since this show will likely last at least 7 seasons, 2 of out of 7 seasons of horrible Laurel will not tarnish the show overall.

Yeah, I think Laurel will now slowly become written more closely as the comic version of Dinah in terms of her character and how she interacts with others. It really showed with how she stood up to Oliver in the last episode and told him that she doesn't need him.
