🌎 Discussion: Civil Rights, Affirmative Action, Critical Race Theory, Systemic Inequality, and Racism - Part 4

I did chuckle at the irony of a Kansas government official using a misnomer to justify his ignorance of a virus, considering the Spanish Flu is believed to have possibly originated from that state.

Except for the government officials in China promoting the idea the virus comes from American soldiers.

Chinese Officials Blame US Army for Coronavirus

The worst part is I can't even say for sure if this is really something he heard or if he got it confused with some poor aid trying very hard to explain to him that the Spanish Flu didn't come from Spain.

You know, at the end of the day my primary concern is not the racism against Asians (I'm Chinese btw in case some people don't know yet). When people in the Trump administration or in Kansas choose this level of ignorance, they're putting their own followers in danger. All the Americans who take Trump at his word are going to be looking for health information under the term "Chinese virus" instead of the proper term(s) used by every credible health authority on the planet. They might be getting incomplete or even wrong information that's putting their own safety in danger. Ditto for the Americans who now think they're safe if they don't see any Asians around. These ignorant fools are potentially killing their own base.

I just talked with a co-worker and pro-Trumper who said they were going to call it the Chinese virus because it came from China. I had to break it to them the Spanish flu originated in Kansas and it took them by surprise a virus that was called by one country actually was not from that country.

That might end up biting them, but it still is a concern for Asians facing potential racist attacks and abuse. Having been the subject of it growing up, it's not something I care to relive again, but it feels like we're heading back to those days.

But Trump probably wants to head back to the days of segregation anyway if he could get away with it. Make America White Again! :o

That is the barely subtexted meaning behind MAGA. Get rid of the undesirables, by which they mean anyone who is not white enough.

Anyone who's not white, a "native" American, and at least professes to be a Christian (because clearly to Trump followers, acting like a Christian is irrelevant, all that matters is saying the right things no matter how blatantly empty they are).

I forgot you should also be straight and cis-gendered. You can stay in the closet and maybe be okay otherwise.

MAGA is the worst thing to happen to America since the Civil War.

I totally get where you're coming from, brother, but I'm going to tell you why my perspective on anti-Asian racism is a bit "meh" right now.

I'm a 45-year-old gay Asian man born in Canada in a single-parent family. The bigotry that's coming back for other Asians never left me in the first place. Except now all the groups of Asians that have either dismissed the hatred that I've experienced all my life, or in some cases enabled it, are suddenly becoming triggered Huffpost SJWs now because it's affecting them. I'm talking about rich Asians, evangelical Christians, nationalistic mainland Chinese living in Western countries and bougie Asian liberal feminists married to white men who look down on Asian men. All these groups have spit on me to some degree all my life, but now they know how I feel all the time. So my sympathies for other Asians are understandably limited. I'm more worried right now about the economy, people's jobs, the global supply chain and elderly people dying.

Oh, that's a brilliant plan. It's like the KKK from Django Unchained came up with it.

We already know that Stephen miller is a full on white nationalist from his leaked emails. At this point it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone what this administration is really about.

Good luck with that. This is the same Hollywood that already treated Asian men as subhuman undesireables and Asian women as only having value for pleasuring straight white males. I can't stand Donald Trump, but putting this all on him is stupid and shortsighted, and ignores the normalization of hate crimes against Asians, men in particular, that has come historically from both liberal and conservatives.

I just discovered blackfishing is a thing.

The sub reddit was one wild rabbit hole

I will say this.

In NJ, Jersey City (1,600+ cases) is the epicenter and other northern cities like Paterson (900+ cases, Lean on Me was based there) has high. So Northern Jersey is up there because of it's proximity to NYC.

However, Lakewood (800+) an hour south of NYC, which is considered South Jersey. It's a Jewish community that's 50% of that city's population. They have the 3rd highest cases out of any other City. The issue with these communities is a lot of them are still gathering for weddings, funerals, etc. even though there are restrictions against those at this time.

In terms of a City of Montreal blockading, I don't know why food deliveries are not included but there is still a risk.

But surely there's a better way of dealing with this than setting up a police blockade around Jewish neighbourhoods. There's Hasidic and Orthodox neighbourhoods in Toronto, and we're not even close to doing that. And nobody here's pointing out the disturbing historical parallel.

As soon as I read your first sentence, those historical parallels went through my head. I don't know what you do to fix this issue, and I can understand the immediate response. They are trying to save lives. But at the same time... yeah.
