Maher’s comments remind me of a few years ago when there was this outrage over Obama not using the term ‘radical Islam’ when addressing terriosm. They thought Obama was being spineless and “politically correct” with his wording when in reality the reason for him refraining from using the term was because it simply would foment Islamaphobia and Obama knew that as President everything, including his own words held power and when fighting extremism he had to word things in a responsible and cautious way to avoid inflaming tensions.

We could really use that type of President for this crisis right about now.

Being discriminatory does not exclude one from being a liberal. Liberals punch down as much as conservatives do, they just choose different targets. The normalization of violence and hate crimes against Asians (Asian men in particular, who are bearing the brunt of the most violent and direct of the recent hate crimes) has been going on since before Donald Trump, and liberals and conservatives are both to blame.

It's the symbol of traitors no matter how you cut it. Unless the education system has totally excised the American Civil War from any and all curriculum no one is going to be ignorant of the events of the Civil War.

Should we now place monuments to Benadict Arnold all over? For that matter why not justify a bunch of monuments to John Wilkes Boothe? These people who put so much stock in symbolism in other ways and absolutely DO get offended (Hell, go out of their way to be offended... ) by say, flag burning or a football player taking a knee, are okay with the mass display of symbols that, I'm sorry, are steeped in racism, slavery and yet again, the dishonorable betrayal of the United States of America.


And this goes to my point that the real "political correctness" that's afflicted the country is the coddling of the reactionary/conservatives of this nation. From the abandonment of Reconstruction in the South to allowing the "monument" movement which was all about honoring traitors and setting up public symbols of White Supremacy, to us even contemplating that "It's history!" is a good excuse to have a sizeable population of your country literally waving the flag of traitors and sedition (**** that argument that's just splitting hairs about it being a "Battle Flag" or whatever BS rationales ya'll come up with...) to the decades and decades of the tolerating of Jim Crow to the constant romanticising of the Confederacy in fiction for well over a century even until today... Yeah, they are the ones being coddled by our society.

And... In at least the last two decades it's these folk whose choices and beliefs have inflicted the most outrageous wounds upon the nation, via viciousness or ignorance.
