So, there are 2 significant openers in Japan as competition for Frozen, Detective Conan and Captain America 2. This has caused a loss of about 15% of Frozen's seats this weekend, but the Saturday number for Frozen is down just -1.53% at TOHO.
TOHO Saturday admission numbers:
Detective Conan - 64,398
Frozen - 56,681
CA2 - 14,589
Conan will probably edge out Frozen for Saturday, but Frozen should win Sunday and the weekend with another weekend around 8 million.
TOHO accounts for 20% of theaters, but Frozen edged Conan out on some of the smaller ones
Kinezo admissions
Frozen - 12,849
Detective Conan - 11,697
Absolutely amazing and consistent holds every weekend. Here's the list of TOHO Saturday admissions numbers to date:
1- 58,491
2- 67,663
3- 58,906
4- 61,448
5- 57,660
6- 56,681
And in preparation for tomorrow, Sunday admissions to date:
1- 64,414
2- 72,506
3- 80,440
4- 67,696
5- 67,869
6- ???
I wonder why TWS is doing so poorly in Japan, when it's a huge hit in both China and S.Korea? But I'm glad Frozen is still doing so well over there.
TWS is actually doing better in Japan than CA: TFA. The first one only did $3,431,374 total, this one will open to about $2 million and do $5-6 million most likely.
With a few exceptions, superhero movies don't fare that well in Japan for some reason.
Thor did 5.7m, Thor 2 did 6.0m.
The biggest ones I can find are The Avengers at 45.2m and The Amazing Spider-Man at 39.2m.
I hope Dove Cameron doesn't get corrupted like the other Disney kids.
Thank God Ryan Gosling and Justin Timberlake made it out okay. Yes, it freaked me out that Ryan was in the Mickey Mouse Club!

On its 155th day of domestic release, Walt Disney’s animated smash Frozen has crossed $400 million at the domestic box office. Coming off a $67 million Fri-Sun debut over its $93m Thanksgiving weekend opening, the film has earned a mammoth 5.9x its opening weekend number. And while rank doesn’t matter per-se, its 17-week hold in the top ten brings to mind the kind of old-school hits like Ghostbusters and Back to the Future that used to just play for months and months on end. Heck, Frozen has been out on VOD since February 25th and available on DVD since March 18th. Frozen has actually earned $15.7m since its VOD release and $3.3m since it dropped on DVD/Blu-Ray and sold 3.8 million copies in a single day. This wasn’t just a predetermined smash hit. Frozen touched a nerve around the world in a way few films do today.

"The end of April through around May 5th is called "Golden Week" in Japan since there are many national holidays during this period. Many Japanese offices close for about a week to 10 days, depending on the calender. People take a vacation and travel around the country or abroad, so tourist attractions in Japan are crowded during this time"
"Golden week technically begins with the Emperor's Birthday on April 29 and concludes with Children's Day on May 5. Many Japanese take vacation time a day or two before and after, so the impact of Golden Week actually stretches to around 10 days."
"Golden Week is a collection of four national holidays within a week. Instead of just giving people those four holidays off, many offices end up closing for about 7-10 days, giving their employees a full week of freedom. Even if theyre not given the whole week, many employees will just take time off anyway. The holiday week starts on April 29th and goes through May 5th."
I wonder if it's because their comic books are generally better.
