Disney's Frozen - Part 3

I think Frozen will probably dethrone Spirited Away as the highest-grossing movie in Japan.

At this point I really don't see how it doesn't pass Spirited Away in dollars.
Frozen needs another 63m or so and has over a month before any competition comes out. After 10 weeks it still hasn't even begun to drop so every week estimates are getting raises higher and higher. Those absurdly high 300m+ predictions a few weeks ago suddenly look more and more possible, and if Frozen doesn't start slowing down soon they might end up low.
We also have to factor in summer weekday boosts soon. Like spring break, weekdays for summer often double for most movies so that will help Frozen's full week totals even more.

how have other Disney animated movies fared in Japan?

With Frozen's success, how big do you think are its chances to end up in Kingdom Hearts III? Elsa would be awesome as an ally.

I still don't see how Frozen is a MASTERPIECE like some of you people think.

Sure It's a good movie, but Masterpiece??? I am puzzled... I really CAN'T understand that. What exactly is the movie masterpiece at?

We DON'T need to overrate this movie more than it need to, please. Not trying to hate on this movie, but comon!

I still think Tangled was the better Movie. Frozen is good too, but I am honestly puzzled by its crazy success.

I dont even think its a good movie - it is average - indistinguishable to me from all the non Pixar Hollywood animated films that come out every year.

I actually prefered Wreck-It Ralph than both of those. Never got all the craze for Tangled, prefered Frozen by far.

I liked Wreck-It Ralph the least of the three, favourite being Frozen and my second favourite being Tangled.

I loved Frozen. I loved Tangled. but I wouldn't go so far and label either as "masterpieces." They are definitely in my top 3 Disney animated films, though.

for me, there is only one Disney animated masterpiece and that will always be a tale as old as time, a song as old a rhyme.............Beauty and the Beast.

can you guess what the other film in my top 3 is?? :cwink:

and can you guess who my top 3 Disney princesses are?? :oldrazz:

Frozen is a very impressionable film to young girls, and to me, I don't see why I want - or need - to poop on that parade. I like Frozen a lot, and I think it kinda shocked people on how decent it was.

Tangled created the momentum, Wreck-It continued it, and Frozen solified Disney Animation's place in the industry. All this since Pixar is in a weird state of creativity.

with that being said, it's obvious Frozen resonated with the audiences in general and struck some kind of chord.

otherwise, it would not have had the BO success it has had.

Raven's right: Frozen struck a chord with the audience (especially Tumblr!)

I can't take this discussion of Frozen as a masterpiece at all because just compare it to movies like Incredibles or Ratatouille or Wall-E or Toy Strory 3. Is it even close to those movies in quality in any way? In either direction or script or cleverness or animation or in any way whatsoever. These to me are masterpieces of animation - certainly not Frozen which seems very rote to me.

Let's not talk about 'masterpieces' when we're still at the trailend of its success. The whole masterpiece thing takes years.generations to solidify.

I think it's better than the ones you listed there. You don't, that's fine, people have different opinions.

Is it finally happening?!?! Please for the LOVE of all that is good: NO MORE SPINOFFS!

I absolutely respect your opinion, but I will just point out one statistic. All those 4 films got Oscar nominations for screenplay - and they were all shoo-ins, meaning widely expected to get nominations. Frozen was not even discussed as a possibility.

All those 4 movies became some of the most acclaimed films of their respect years with numerous nominations from many critics groups for best Picture and other categories and not just Best Animated Film. There are critics polls every year, all 4 were heartily represented towards the top end, Wall-E even won quite a few and even won many Best Picture awards, one from a group as major as the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. It is now regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, ranked 202nd greatest film ever made in the vastly influential Sight and Sound poll that takes place once a decade.

I saw none of these things for Frozen and saw it receive a token Best Animated Picture nomination every where and it did not feature in any critics poll of any kind in any capacity.

So I think Frozen definitely made far less noise and did not truly present a case to be considered as a great piece of cinema.

Elsa and Rapunzel. Kingdom Hearts III might be the only place where I could get my Tangled/Frozen cross-over.

I wonder how much more convoluted the plot will become. :(

There have been 3 Disney films that have resonated enough with me story wise, music, etc....for multiple viewings. The Jungle Book as a video, Beauty and the Beast at the theater, and now Frozen. I think a masterpiece is characterized by its longevity as in, years from now will it be something that people will view and enjoy again....so right now, that is hard to tell.

Looking at the top 50 list WDAS (Walt Disney Animation Studios) have 0 in the top 50. Pixar fares better with 4

Monsters University - 90.1M
Monsters Inc. - 74.4M
Toy Story 3 - 126.7M
Finding Nemo 102.4M

Recent WDAS movies

Tangled - 31.1M
Wreck It Ralph - 29.6M
The Princess and the Frog - $4.8M

whether or not Frozen can be considered a "masterpiece." whether or not Frozen's screenplay won certain awards or scored high on critics polls. one thing is certain.

Frozen has HUGE mainstream appeal, on a level that other Disney animated films have not achieved ( probably not since Lion King or Toy Story ).

It has achieved $400m domestic and $1b worldwide.

The soundtrack was successful.

Frozen merchandise is popular and sold out.

Elsa and Let It Go have made their way into SNL and Jimmy Fallon comedy skits.

Elsa is already making her way into an ABC tv show next season.

The numbers and overall reactions don't lie. If Frozen had merely been a mediocre/so-so movie, it would not have had the same BO, merchandising, and mainstream appeal success.

Okay, and? The opinions of others doesn't change my opinion that Frozen was better than them. The characters and story in Frozen I liked more than all of those films, not to mention I get a lot more emotion out of it than those films. Obviously you don't, that's fine.
